My Dad's 40 year old Webb mower's clutch handle has worn away :

Mower worth nothing, except sentimentally, and he likes it and would like to continue using it.

Any ideas on fixing that handle?
Parts apparently not available, but I dont know if that handle could be cut off and a new modern handle added, would it matter?
