Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Smartnav wiring diagram please?
« on: 24 February 2010, 16:58:09 »
Not much to add really....

Anyone got a wiring diagram for a Smartnav? Or any idea where I can find one?

I've bought a unit off fleabay, but of course the guy who sold it to me didn't do the installation himself, so hasn't got a diagram. And it looks like he has just cut the wires and sent me the parts.  I'm OK with some of them, but the main harness to the main unit has 4 wires, and the little button has 5 wires coming from it, and they are not the same colours!

Any help appreciated....

Alan

In an effort to get my CD player to 'shuffle' or 'random' play (I've now read the manual and found out how to do it) I tried pressing the RDS button for a few seconds while the CD was playing.  I got some weird numbers on the display, like 32B001106.2 but the first two (and sometimes three) digits were changing every few seconds.   The engine was off at the time.

Any idea what they might signify?

Due to my car having been "pre-abused" rather than "pre-loved" I need one rear disc, but Vaux will only sell me a pair (£94 + VAT).

Does anyone know the sort of price I should be paying for one?

Halfords quoted £85 for one - or £15 with a Halfords trade card.  When I went back with my trade card, turned out to be £64!  I guess the first guy read the wrong line on his screen ::)

I'm also tempted to order new ones off fleabay - seem to be £45 inc P&P for 2 discs and 4 pads. Sounds good - is there a catch? Anyone tried this route?

Any pointers would be gratefully received........

Omega General Help / handbrake adjustment
« on: 18 January 2008, 23:11:17 »
Hi

Got to put new pads on rear discs tomorrow (poss new discs as well).

I'll have to adjust the h/brake - presumably I adjust the cable first and then the 'star ' adjuster?  And is the cable adjuster readily visible under the car (in the middle?).

I won't need any special tools will I?

Cheers,

Hi

I am beginning to suspect that oil/water mixing (H/Gasket, or oil cooler, or other) is a weak point of some VX engines.

I am looking for a new car at present, and saw a Zafira (I need the luggage capacity :() which had a milky deposit on the filler cap. I wiped it while ou ton the test drive, and checked again a mile later, back at the garage - slight milky dep. again.  Car had done 16k miles (and that looked genuine by both the serv. hist. and the condition of the steering wheel/interior etc).

My query is:
Is this definitely a sign of impending doom, or can this happen if the car hasn't been on a long run recently - I thought I read that somewhere?(I'm assuming it's been doing 50 yard runs from one side of the car lot to the other for a month or so).

Any advice would be much appreciated, before I either buy a pup (dog?) or turn down a good value family car.  :-/

Omega General Help / removal of hoses at heater matrix
« on: 22 December 2007, 12:35:51 »
Hi

I think I need to flush the heater matrix, as a number of other forum members have done.

I am now attempting the job..........

Firstly, can it be done without removing the whole wiper /scuttle assembly across the whole width of the car (please say 'yes')

Secondly, and more importantly, how do I remove the 2 white clips that hold the hoses onto the metal spigots protruding from the bulkhead. I've never come across them before.  Can they be removed without destroying them.

Thanks,

from a very cold forum member!

Omega General Help / heater bypass valve
« on: 19 December 2007, 20:57:33 »
Hi All

I've had no heat in my casr since I got it.  I suspected the HBV and got my VX dealer to change it, but things are no better .  They did warn me that it might not be that, but offered to diagnosis / testing at their usual rates - I declined and got them to do the HBV - maybe they do know better than me after all!

Anyway, any other ideas?  They say it MIGHT be a lack of vacuum (so the valve isn't operating).  Is there just the one narrow vac pipe attached to the HBV, and is there any easy way of checking the vacuum on it?

Any help would be appreciated, as the heated seats don't warm my hands and it's now sub-zero.

PS the aircon has never blown cold - I tried to top it up with refrigerant.  Could this be related to the HBV as well?

Omega General Help / head gasket gone ( I think) - £?
« on: 22 October 2007, 23:57:11 »
Hi

99.99% sure my h/gasket has gone (topping up water every 50 miles, oil every 300 miles). Water stinks of oil.

Any idea what an independent garage would charge me to renew it?

Also, how long should it last before I might have to do it again? Friend of mine recommends getting it fixed, then getting rid of the car quick, but I would have thought it should be OK for 60-80k miles before giving out again.  Any opinions? (Facts preferred, but opinions gratefully received ;))

Many thanks,

Alan

Omega General Help / No heat in cabin- what should I check first?
« on: 15 September 2007, 18:12:03 »
Hi

I'm getting no heat in the cabin - only noticed it yesterday when it got cold in the evening.  The auto electronic controls seem to work OK, but it just blows more (cold) air when I turn the temp up.

Is the 1st thing to try to backflush the heater matrix, or should I check the fabled 'heater bypass valve' that I've read about (not entirely sure what that does when it's working, let alone when it goes wrong).

I know I should probably attack both routes, but really would appreciate a steer as I don't have a lot of spare time at the mo as I'm just about to move house; so if I can keep it down to one job instead of two that would be great.

Many thanks,

Alan

Omega General Help / Transmission line pressure adjuster?
« on: 25 August 2007, 13:00:50 »
I have a "Rosmore GM transmission line pressure adjuster" fitted to my car with Scotchlocks.  It's a small aluminium box (8cmx8cmx4cm) screwed onto the bulkhead. I know that's what it is because that's what it says on the label!

Any idea what it does (and why it might have been added). I can't believe it's a genuine VX fitment.

Newbie Welcome Area / Hello All - what a friendly site!
« on: 23 August 2007, 00:25:11 »
Just bought an Omega (2.2 CD auto, 2002) last week.

Have owned BMWs for some years (ran my last one to 210k miles), and there are a few differences I've noticed already - let's be honest, the price I paid for it is a key difference.  But essentially it's a roomy, comfortable, rear wheel drive car that I feel I could drive all day.

I've had a quick look around this site and really like the 'feel' of it.

Whether it will help me solve all the minor niggles that my car has got remains to be seen, but I've got a bit of a steer on the airbag light that I'll pursue at the weekend.
Failing that I have called into my local Vauxhall dealer who says he'll do half an hour diagnosis for £45 and see if they can sort it within that time.

So I look forward to being a member here.

PS was it my imagination, or did the Vauxhall service manager turn his nose up when I told him it was an Omega that I had just bought??? Presumably because he knew I hadn't bought it from a Vauxhall dealer, let alone his dealership, as they don't sell S/H ones any more.... or was it pity - I really wasn't sure!

In case you're wondering, the subject is a quote from the dolphins in Hitch Hikers' Guide to the Galaxy when they eventually left our planet, having trained us to feed them by rewarding us with tricks!

Anyway, what I really mean is that I've just got rid of my Omega after an eventful year of ownership, so will be leaving now.

It was a comfortable experience in the driver's seat, but uncomfortable as an owner!  It suffered almost all of the typical problems, and I had to have a new head gasket done (bloke who refurbed the head for me said it was probably the worst he'd seen).  Exhaust manifold leaking, driver's door crack of doom, blocked heater matrix, expansion tank just about to crack around the neck, needles to say the aircon didn't get cold.

Due to just having twins, I've had to get a newer, lower mileage, more economical and more reliable (hopefully) estate car with ISOFIX fittings.  But I'm missing the comfortable ride already.

So MANY THANKS to those of you who helped me out - this is truly the best owner's forum on the net.  I may still wander in and out from time to time, if that's OK with you all, as I enjoy the banter.

But cheerio for now.....

Alan

PS If anyone offers you a grey/green Omega in the Slough area, don't touch  it with a bargepole

Hi

OK, I've bought a cheapo Tech2 (OBD factory) and I think I now have the wherewithal to connect it to a laptop that has the required ports.

A few Q's...

1.I have a disc supplied with the Tech2 - do I have to have it in the CD drive when I connect the Tech2, or is it purely a list of codes and what they mean?

2. Do I connect to the diagnostic port with the ignition on or off (I assume I don't want the engine running???)

3. Where exactly is the diagnostic port? I've looked around, but I can't see it.

4. If I'm asking all these questions, should I give up now and take it to the stealer and pay him his £45 for half an hour?

Hi
Just got a tech2 (made by obdfactory).

Do I just plug it into the car and my laptop?  Do I need to have the CD provided in the CD drive - I assume I do.

The files on the CD are things like eculist, but they appear to be just that - lists of codes, rather than any clever program type files like .exe etc.

Bear in mind I'm not a computer expert, nor a car expert, but I feel I should be capable of plugging an instrument into a socket and at least reading the results, even if I don't understand them.

just don't want to damage the tech2, or my wife's laptop or the car...

General Discussion Area / Search old MOT history/mileage on the web
« on: 27 December 2007, 23:55:50 »
Apologies if you all know this already, but I've just got a new MOT, and now the records are all computerised , I've found you can access - on the web - previous MOT details, INCLUDING the recorded mileage at the time.

Just go to www.motinfo.gov.uk

This could be very beneficial if considering buying a new car and wondering if the odo reading is genuine.  All you need is the reg No. and the 12 digit MOT test number (which the seller would presumably let you see).

I found this very interesting  :o  Wish I'd had access to this in the past............
