I've recently bought a reader based on ELM327 chips off ebay for around £30 delivered. Haven't used it on my Omega yet, but it was fine on miss's 206. You need a laptop to connect it to (USB), but it can also do other stuff like reading live data, etc. and can be used on any car post 2001.

There are loads of these on ebay for different prices. Their basically all based on the same thing, only different casing and/or different freeware software. If you go for one, make sure it's the latest version (currently 1.3) and read this before you buy: http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/ELM327-mini-guide-Read-Before-Buying_W0QQugidZ10000000009829308.

I`ve seen a fair few Airbag faults generated by the laptop based ones - mainly on VAG cars, where the airbag light will illuminate after the laptop has been plugged in. Some sort of software issue !!  Better to go for a dedicated hand-held machine I think

 :-/
Only ever diagnose airbags on a VAG (with *any* reader) if necessary - there is a firmware fault in a load of their airbag ecus that running diags on them destroys the ecu

Luckily mine only supports engine ECU, good tip though ;)

OK I know this is a bit late! But I was searching for bulb recommendations and found this thread. You can check http://www.1stautobulbs.com as they do other makes (Philips, Bosch, etc.) at good prices. You get 10% discount if you're a vxon paid member.

Omega General Help / Re: Rattling Door Pins Quick Fix
« on: 10 November 2009, 10:40:34 »
Thanks for that Richard. Last time I did it I took the door cards off although I was replacing the speakers at the same time. I completely understand how this little thing can drive you crazy. The other way of getting rid of this is by turning up the volume on your stereo  ::)

Omega General Help / Re: Exhaust Gargle
« on: 20 November 2009, 13:50:31 »
I got the exhaust replaced by a garage on my miss's 206 a while ago (she didn't want to wait for a year until I found a decent cheap exhaust! lol) and it started to make sounds similar to a mis-fire afterwards. At the time I looked in some forums and saw some comments that OEM silencers hide this type of noise better than the aftermarket ones.

Anyway, couple of months later the ignition coil block started playing up and car was mis-firing most of the time. The noise went away as soon as I changed the coil. Just my 2p :)

I've used http://www.event-tyres.co.uk/ twice so far and been happy with them. They're an online mobile supplier/fitter.

I've also heard good recommendation of http://www.micheldever.co.uk/car_tyres.html although they're not online as such.

Omega General Help / Re: Exhaust - Hair ?????

Hi,

I gave my 2.5 V6 a good "brisk" 300 mile run yesterday and was very pleased with the result.

However, this morning I noticed some black hair like stuff coming out of the exhaust tailpipe. The rear part of the exhaust has done less than 20,000 miles, so I'm totally confused and wonder what the fix is -  :-[ Although the going was brisk yesterday, it certainly wasn't ragging it.

Thanks

That happened to mine a quite few months ago but it has made no difference to the running and its passed its test after that too!
If it ain't broke, don't fix it is my motto.
Ray

But it is broke.....and when it does throw in the towel fully the back box could well blow up.
I can confirm the veracity of that statement. When the backbox on the one we had blew itself apart, it also holed the fuel tank.

now you're being racist! you see black hair then it blew itself apart? what are you on now?  ;D

possibly because it's also linked to the switch, i.e. more mechanical links

Mine started playing up a short while ago. I got a used solenoid for £14.99 off ebay delivered just today! See http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1175610013 on how to replace it.

suspect not, bugger that. Still wondering if its easier to change the whole arm for another with good bearing......Anyone?

I remember one member once changed the bearing (Jimbob?) but he also made a note that next time he'll change the whole arm!

If you're going to change the arm, do it in one go! I took the arm off but had to leave the car (on stands + jack) for a week (silly, I know:-[) only to find out later that diff and the back-plate where the front of the arm goes had moved! Had a nightmare putting it back together!

Omega General Help / Re: A terminal MOT failure?
« on: 23 November 2009, 23:14:37 »
You could have tried JustMOTs if you were in the south-east. They don't have any repair garage: just MOTs! And usually at ridiculously low prices. Got mine for £15 last year!
