Took the Proper car out for a bit of a drive. Distronic works a treat, and slows the car to about 5 mph before cutting out.

The faster it's set to the longer the braking distance it allows. Looking forward to using it on the motorway once the gearbox is sorted.

Not a bad drive, which way did you go?

M5 to Worcester, quick walk along the banks of the Severn, cross country to Daventry with a quick walk along the Grand Union Canal, A1 to Edinburgh with a quick walk on Bamburgh beach. Couple of nights in Edinburgh, and then headed home via A701 (lovely drive!), A74(M), M6/M5 with no walks.  :)

Mondeo behaved itself, which was just as well as I forgot to renew the breakdown service.  ::)

Off up there to collect my new project 2 weeks today, going from Worcester. Toyota pick up and 4 wheel trailer so will take all day to get there! Maps say 6hrs (300 miles) but add in the comfort and fuel stops more like 8hrs. Rooms booked for over night stop.

Found the coolant leak on the Omega.
Its weeping from where that stat housing bolts to the block. Got the bastid bolt out. Now going to the guides section to remind myself of Loo Knee,s method of separating the stat housing from the transfer pipe.
Could do without it at the moment, but such is life.  ::)

Yes its been a Deja Vu afternoon.
Bastid bolt out. Managed to separate the stat housing from the transfer pipe ok (Ive had it out before).
Cleaned up mating surfaces, then thought about buying a new stat and housing.
Decided as this one has only been on there for about 15,000 miles to smear some blue Hylomar on the mating surfaces and torque it back down.
Will carry on reassembling tomorrow then pressure test it again before bolting all the bits on top.
A bit concerned about transfer pipe O rings is it feels a bit of a slack fit in the stat housing.
Will see if I have any suitable O rings in the shed tomorrow. If not then need to decide whther to source some new ones or just a bit more Hlyomar and say a little prayer.   ;D
I really want it back on the road before Saturday.
I have an appointment with a Consultant Saturday morning and its possible he may send me to Romford hospital to be admitted for an Operation on my (alleged) brain.
If that were to happen swmbo would probably feel obliged to visit, and the only one of my cars she would consider driving is the Omega.

When I replaced the thermostat on my car, I found the bastard bolt easy to remove and refit. On removal of the head to replace the gaskets, I found out why; half the threaded boss was missing, and the only thing holding the bolt(transfer tube, lifting bracket, etc) in place was habit. I decided not to source another head, refitted the original and just pushed the bolt back into place. It was like that for several more years :y

Yesterday refitted the transfer pipe and bastid bolt. Just now went out and pressure tested the system and its leaking around the Stat at 5psi.  >:( :'(
So need to start the job over again. I m not going to use gasket goo this time if I can help it.
I found what I think is a rubber seal for the Stat housing among my O rings yesterday, but if it turns out not to be the right one, I will probably just buy a whole new housing.
The other problem is going to be the transfer pipe seals.
Are they available separately ? If so where from ? Anyone got a part number for them please ?
Might be worth posting that request up separately I suppose.  :-\

………..

I’m sure that you’ve already checked that the stat bolts aren’t bottoming out but I’ll mention it anyway just in case, as some stats had the thinner flange on them.  :y  As it’s been fine up until now I doubt it’s that but thought it worth a mention.  :y

Now you mention it I seem to recall an issue like this in the past where some thermostat housings were not compatible with some seals, due to having a deeper milling for the gasket than the seal was thick.

Its the same stat, seal and bolts that have been on the car for several years. It only started weeping recently
Seal looked a bit knackered, which isnt surprising as its a thin little piece of rubber.
Thats why I used some blue Hylomar as a belt & braces approach but evidently, it hasnt worked.
