He also thinks it's fine to embark on this journey with one, carry on backpack. He will turn up at the conference, which will attract all the brain boxes from across the world, wearing a shirt that has been stuffed into a backpack for four days, and won't see any harm in it.

I suspect all the other Gen Z/ Millennial brain boxes at the conference will also be wearing crumpled shirts and T-Shirts so I wouldn't worry about that Uncle STEMO.  :D

Easy to say this I know as I don't know your lad or his issues, but it seems to me that the more you make a fuss about this the more determined he will be to go off on his adventure. He's been to Romania a couple of times albeit with his girlfriend so it's not like he never been away or anything.

As Dave says despite your misgivings, help him prepare, make sure he has good insurance etc and prepare to worry your tits off while he's gone.  ::)

What does his Mum think?  ???
Not gonna happen, Tigger, we've had a proper, full blown shouting match. This last year he's been to Romania twice, Denmark and Israel. Popped across the border to Bulgaria and Sweden. I sit with my phone in my hand and he keeps in touch all the time. I still fill my pants if he goes missing for a few hours. But this is a step too far. If he goes, and I mean it, I've told him I'm booking a cottage in N Yorkshire for a week and turning my phone off. Heart attacks are not good for you at my age.
So Steve, he's been to all these places fairly recently and managed to return safely. I realise that the States trip is a whole different ball game, but let him go, wish him a great trip and worry your guts about him all the while he's away. what could possibly go wrong.  :D

Exactly my thoughts.

Is there a reason why Arizona is so different?

Despite the limitations Aspergers he wants his independence. Good luck to the fella.
See my above reply, Opti.

No two Asperger's people are the same, just like anyone else, but

My lad is not as severely affected as that, but he still struggles in a lot of situations.

If he has to pay over 6 grand for someone to babysit him, he might just as well go himself.  ;)

Can you go with him?
Thinking that too.

Might actually be a positive experience all round ;)

There is a passenger assistance category which covers it, check him in at the assistance desk and have them guide him to the departure lounge and gate.

As for her US visa, if I had the option of going to Belfast, Dublin, Amsterdam or Paris to get mine, then surely Lundun or Belfast are options.

Also for his ESTA, he needs to be sure to buy it directly from the the US.gov site and not from a Google search.

https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta

It only costs a few bucks, so anything over $21 is essentially a rip off and will take longer, although he needs to be sure that he has the correct visa for his trip.

The US embassy appointments start off months away, but if you keep checking the appointment site at obscure times, you can literally shave months off the queue. Mine went from nine weeks down to about eight days.

Also, whilst not actually travelling with him you could book a flight somewhere nearer that leaves after his flight and then you can see him to the gate.

Don't worry about him STEMO. The chances of him finding a Vegan resturaunt in Tucson is nil. He'll starve to death before any harm comes to him  ;D

I can recommend a few steak joints though.

Oh - there are no direct UK to Tucson flights anyway. The nearest entry points are Phoenix, Las Vegas and LAX. Phoenix has the fewest immigration queues, so is a good choice. You can fly from PHX to TUS for thrupence ha'penny.
What are both of those like for homeless people? There seemed to be more in Denver than Manhatten :-\

He's got his esta, got it back hours after applying online. $21, as you say.

So a young fit healthy man goes away with an old codger who has bits dropping off him....

That's going to cramp his style a bit. ;D
