Anybody got views on todays driving I think its getting faster
Is it possible that cars today are made to go faster than in years gone by
seems that most people want to get there before they have set off
can anybody elaborate on this.

I certainly do......
Driving standards are getting poorer
Drivers attitude are getting worse
Many drivers, as you say, are impatient
Even modest modern cars are much faster than those from the 60's 70's
Modern cars seem to need less concentration to drive them than they did, hence the poor standard of driving
Just a few of my initial thoughts...... :( :( :(
-
symptomatic of the uncaring competitive rat race
-
Cars are of course faster. Driving styles are terrible. i'm fairly sure a big amount of people have no concept of breaking distances! >:(
-
I always leave tarmac and tyres and a bit more when pulling up in a queue. Then you get some gloit pulling up as close as possible behind you. Retards. I then pull forward to allow a gap (so I don't get rear ended if they do), then they pull forward so close they can lick my rear bumper. I hate that. Are they thick or what? I'm tempted to put the hazards on when the lights go green, and stay put so that they would have to reverse to carry on.
People do some sort of stupid manoeuvre only a retard would think is ok, nearly wipe you out, then gave you a black look/threaten violence/give verbal abuse etc as if it's your fault!
If they hit my car, that'll be that. It'll be damaged then, so it won't matter if I back up and ram them a few (hundred) times to teach them a lesson.

Driving standards have certainly reduced...
IMO, many drivers appear to either drive far to quickly or slow... Tonight driving home from work I got held up behind someone going through a 30 mph limit doing between 5 and 10 mph, although the road had speed bumps they didn't really speed up between them, then only went up to 35 when they entered the National Speed Limit after them... On a 4 lane stretch of the A1(M) many drivers seem to think it is safe to drive at 60 in lane 3 and then the pillocks who drive with their rear fog lights on when they simply are not necessary... These just occurring on my way home from work today...
But then, look at driving lessons and the modern longer test... Parking in a car park - good thing, theory test - good thing, hazard perception test - terrible, how to check oil, water, washer levels - whilst knowing how to do them is a good thing, part of the driving test not so good...

When Master Vamps was learning to drive a couple of years ago he had a DVD, I kept failing the test for two reasons, first, spotting more hazards and secondly, for spotting them too early........ ::) ::) ::)

silly question really - technology advances ;)

Worsening driving standards are just reflecting the decline in general behaviour IMHO, I think people are generally getting more impatient, selfish and rude in every way. I work in a supermarket, I see it every day and I despair of the way people act sometimes, I really do.
For example -
- parking in a disabled spot so that they don't have to walk an extra 20 yards to the front door
- wearing pyjamas to do their shopping. How long does it take to put clothes on ffs?
- feigning injury in a slip or trip to claim thousands in compensation
- claiming that kids have choked on foreign objects in food to claim compensation
- generally treating my staff like s**t because they are the customer, and they are always right
- Eating food all the way round the shop then dumping the remains on any given shelf
- picking up a joint of beef, then deciding they don't want it, and dumping it on any given shelf - bearing in mind this may be worth £20 or more and we can't sell it after 20 minutes out of chill
- you don't want to know what the toilets look like sometimes
I could go on and on....
Oh, I'm sorry, this was supposed to be about driving, wasn't it :-\

True. The single most frightening thing for me.

People do some sort of stupid manoeuvre only a retard would think is ok, nearly wipe you out, then gave you a black look/threaten violence/give verbal abuse etc as if it's your fault!

To elaborate.
Many bad drivers out there. They do things that annoy. In fact, driving standards generally are terrible.
Remember. You ain't gonna be able to change THEIR habits. Live with it. Accept it. If you get annoyed, and yes, I do sometimes, that will only add to the bad driving on the road. This time, you.

Just seems folks are more and more ignorant than ever nowadays , seen a nob in an MX5 radio blarring and sun roof down showing off
when he cut the corner to a junction then decided he would F and blind at the woman he just cut up cos he had to swerve for his mistake >:( >:( >:( felt like getting out and punching him >:( oops road rage :-X ;D oh he was at least 65 not a chav boy racer which was more shocking :(

Sorry Geoffr but that is one of the most annoying habits I encounter on a daily basis. I go through a section of road with 3 sets of lights very close together. I pull up apply handbrake so my brake lightd don't dazzle the car behind and then the driver in front pulls forward another car length leaving me looking like an idiot. :-X

I disagree. I think its getting slower over the past 6 or 7 years. I even changed my commute route, as my average speed, on the MID, had dropped to below 30mph... ...now remember, I tend to drive fairly briskly when the situation allows, esp not on my commute, so that shows how slow the journey had become.
When I first moved here, I used to be able to zip along the A roads to work, probably slightly above the NSL ::). Over time, it became you'd never get above 50mph. Then the 50mph signs went up (from NSL), and overnight, everyone drove at 40mph... ...then 30mph... ...now you get agricultural vehicles getting frustrated with the speeds.
Speed aside, the quality of the driving has deteriorated dramtically, esp in the last 10-15yrs. OK, I work in MK, where most drivers you meet probably have no licence anyway, so I daily see appalling drivers, but we now have a combination of retards who think the road is theirs (reps, jnr manager, who in the 80s had Sierras and Chavaliers, but now have 3/5 series), and tosspots who believe they are sensible, but refuse to use anything but the middle lane on the M40, due to penile length issues.

Or stick in the right lane, at 30mph on the 70mph limits, because they want to turn right in about 10 roundabouts time. Grrrr

I hate;
People driving with fogs on when it's not foggy
People not using all lanes of a motorway how they're designed to be used (slow, overtaking, fast driving)
people who drive 40 everywhere, whether it's a 30 or a 60 limit
Any so called '4x4's' which aren't covered in mud (usually with a woman behind the wheel!)
Slow drivers
Horses on a road- when theres a perfectly good field next to it
Horseboxes who think they're transporting a nuclear warhead rather than a horse
people who either don't indicate or indicate the wrong way
And the highways agency for not putting up signs saying which lane to go in (at a roundabout near me)when people are blatantly incapable of remembering if your turning right at a roundabout you should be in the right lane!
I could go on but then i'll sound like a right old man (I'm only 26)
Rant over!

something i would say after a recent visit to daz and more recently sheffield i think drivers generally are better up ta north m1 was a dream today ditto m6 when i visited daz....its only when you get to the m25 it all goes tits up
of course i could be wrong maybe

when the driving instructors are not up to the job the standards are only going to go downward. bus lanes everywhere these days. most are oblivious to the timing restrictions of such, but when you see a tutor vehicle unable to distinguish at which point to use the lane..clueless.

Can't see why that's annoying. Why does the driver infront who pulls forward make you look like an idiot? You'd look more of an idiot having to reverse to carry on if he broke down, or rear ending him after being rear ended yourself. Anyway, you wouldn't pass your test pulling up so close behind someone. I prefer to keep a safe distance, just like the Highway Code says so :y

I have to agree with you... :y Yes I am from up North, but I lived in Hertford for 7 years and drove as a Mini Cab driver most weekends for about 3 years...........you know the type, London post code, no licencing required just use your own car, with hire and reward insurance, and 'pay for a radio' and off you go....I worked for a more upper class company that ran out of Cuffley, and had the Rover 827, also did a bit of chauffeuring for another company, drove one of the girls out of Eastenders once .... :y :y :y
What we have up here is courtesy, in the South no one lets you out of a junction, up here it is normal to be courteous.... :y :y :y
Lived in Poole for a while, drove tippers and skip trucks, traffic in the summer was terrible, sorry but it was ' I am bigger than you, I am coming out'...... :D :D :D

In anycase, the people who do pull forward so close that they can sniff my exhaust are generally mindless retards who are either on the phone, gassing to their fat mate in the passenger seat, stuffing their face with a pasty or some other activity that requires all their brainpower, hence having none left to actually concentrate on the task in hand of controlling a big lump of metal, which seems to have become secondary.
So before you tell me that's one of the most annoying habits you encounter on a daily basis, tell the millions of other people who do this, first. Thanks :y

OK, without trying to annoy you further, the distance between som of these lights can fit mavbe 10 car lengths. If everybody leaves a massive gap only about 6 or 7 cars get accross the lights. So I pull up apply handbrake and you then pull forward. Leaving a cars length between me and you. The cars waiting to get accross the lights think I am the one leaving an unneccesary large gap preventing another motorist getting accross the lights. I then have to pull forward again to allow another car accross the lights. By me pulling forward again the original person who pulled forward has gained nothing, I still end up rather close to your exhaust. I would add we are talking about very slow moving nose to tail driving here. And I have only ever seen 1 accident at the first set of lights, never any accidents at the other lights as it is so slow moving. IMHO it just polite to get as many cars accross the lights safely in the smallest amount of space possible.
Yes a car can breakdown in front of you, but how often does that happen ? It has never in my driving life happened directly in front of me. Been driving from the age of 17 to now (46) and leaving a normal gap just allows manouevering like pulling out of parking space.
This post is not intended to annoy you, I am sure we will never agree on it. I was just trying to give you an opinion from someone who is effected by those actions. :y

Bloody hell!!! Come and give me a driving lesson please dad!
Certainly wasn't taken literally.
What I am getting at is the general mood, the aggression, the "the every other road user is a knob", the sense of "the others are not doing what I want them to do so they are stupid, non-concentrating fat chavs who should not have a license". I agree, there are lots of those on the roads, but when everybody starts getting aggressive because someone else had done something slightly annoying, it makes for even more unsafe roads.
Something annoys you, fine - but you also should to accept that you annoy others, such as Mantahatch. Maybe you don't understand why what you do annoys, but it does. Maybe others, like me, don't understand how a car close behind in a queue can annoy you. It does annoy you, so ok, let's leave it at that.
Yeah, of course, I have my pet hates, like everyone - driving too close at higher speeds, no use of indicators or using indicators as a right to perform a certain maneuver. And if I got annoyed everytime this happened I would be annoyed every morning and every evening. Fun, yeah right. ;)
What I am driving at is the strange metamorphosis that overcomes so many people once they drive out on the open road.

Me too.
Cameras, volume of traffic to name just 2 reasons.

I'm a very calm person 99% of the time, and that doesn't change in the car. I really enjoy driving, and if I had the opportunity to drive around the world, I'd give it a go... I just don't understand these people who turn from mild-mannered into raging maniacs behind the wheel :-\

I'm surprised you passed then. :)
The rule is, and always has been, that you drive in the leftmost lane unless overtaking a slower vehicle. You return to the left lane when you have completed the overtaking manoeuvre. There is no such thing as a "fast lane" on a motorway.
-
Well i'm sure that's what it was, but regardless i use the lanes properly and it annoys me when people don't, especially people sitting in the middle lane! - MOVE OVER!
-

My old lady does that, and it gets right on my tits.
Back in 82 I was taught to leave a gap that allowed me to read the number plate of the car in front, but that doesn't always work with modern cars so I now adopt the tyres & tarmac approach.
I think its getting slower over the past 6 or 7 years.
Definitely.

No such thing :o :o
30 years ago the rule was "Keep left unless overtaking", and I do believe that same rule applies today.
Any so called '4x4's' which aren't covered in mud (usually with a woman behind the wheel!)
We never felt the need to go mud plugging in ours, we bought it because it had 7 seats and I could get all my work tools in it along with any materials we needed for work (ie, 3m lengths of trunking). It also had the distinct advantage of traversing extreme weather conditions (eg, the january snow) with ease.
i use the lanes properly and it annoys me when people don't, especially people sitting in the middle lane! - MOVE OVER!
If someone is hogging the middle lane, you can always use your "fast driving" (L3 to the rest of us) lane to overtake before moving back to your "slow" (L1 to the rest of us) lane. ;)

If someone is hogging the middle lane, you can always use your "fast driving" (L3 to the rest of us) lane to overtake before moving back to your "slow" (L1 to the rest of us) lane. ;)
That's how everyone should use it anyway as you said, but they don't and if people were'nt hogging the middle lane then i could use L2 to overtake and move back into L1, leaving people who want to drive faster to have the L3 lane, meaning faster moving traffic and safer for everyone. As far as pulling up close to the car in front i don't see the problem, i was taught the tyres and tarmac, but don't because if everyone did it, were there are lots of traffic lights you'd only get about half the cars through causing more traffic jams. If people payed attention you shouldn't get hit up the arse anyway and if the car in front breaks down, just get the 2 cars behind to reverse back a bit and hey presto! I'm sure they don't break down as much as the extra amount of cars makes worthwhile.
And i'm not talking stupidly close before some smart alec replies but 18 inches is fine as far as i'm concerned. ;)

I always leave tarmac and tyres and a bit more when pulling up in a queue. Then you get some gloit pulling up as close as possible behind you
My old lady does that, and it gets right on my tits.
Back in 82 I was taught to leave a gap that allowed me to read the number plate of the car in front, but that doesn't always work with modern cars so I now adopt the tyres & tarmac approach.
I think its getting slower over the past 6 or 7 years.
Definitely.
People not using all lanes of a motorway how they're designed to be used (slow, overtaking, fast driving)
No such thing :o :o

As in "overtaking", like you could also do if L2 is occupied and L3 is open.

The way I see it is:
I want to go from A to B at a reasonable pace and everybody else is in my way. ::) ::) ;D ;D

The tyres & tarmac approach is a much smaller gap than what any reasonably competent driver would leave when following a car anyway.
If people payed attention you shouldn't get hit up the arse anyway
Doesn't matter how much attention you pay, you still need to leave a suitable gap that allows for thinking & braking distance.
and if the car in front breaks down, just get the 2 cars behind to reverse back a bit and hey presto!
Aside from the fact that there will be no room to reverse if everyone follows your concept of being up the arse of the car in front, how much longer do you think that will take as opposed to simply going full lock and moving around the obstacle?
And i'm not talking stupidly close before some smart alec replies but 18 inches is fine as far as i'm concerned. ;)
Until someone rear ends you, which in turn results in you being shunted in to the car in front of you.

Agreed. I was that car a year ago. >:(
That'll teach me to stop for an oncoming bus.

Spoke to my brother last night and he told me he'd smashed his Jag (3.0 XF Twin turbo on a 10 plate).
He's going along the Purley Way in Croydon and just as he gets over the brow of a very slight hill he sees a broken down vehicle in his path. He had no problem stopping, but the f**kwit van driver behind him didn't manage to stop until he piled in to the back of my brother.
The best bit however was when the van driver got and hinted to my brother that it was a 50/50 because my brother failed to make his intentions clear when stopping :o :o
My brother made it clear in no uncertain terms it was entirely the fault of white van man, and also showed him the Roadhawk system he has fitted in his car just in case white van man was thinking of telling porkies when he fills his claim form in ;D

I left a good distance, but still clipped the car in front.
In fact, had I have been a idiot, and been closer, I would have been safer IMHO, as I wouldn't have got pushed into outside lane for Mr Audi A5 to t-bone me ;)

Think peeps are talking at cross purposes. Whilst some are talking about safe driving distances, which I think we'd all agree many drivers don't leave enough of a gap, others are talking about pulling up in a queue of very slow moving traffic.
-
When I did both my HGV and PSV driver training it was pointed out to me, several times, that if I got too close to the vehicle in front when stationary .. ie traffic lights or other junctions, such that the examiner thought I would have to reverse to go around the vehicle if it failed to move, then that would be a fail on the test.
It was surprising how far back one had to stop due to the poor turning circles of the trucks/coaches, but I eventually got the hang of it.

Yeah i always leave at least a 2 second gap when moving but i think if everyone left tyres and tarmac (when stationary) you'd only get about half the amunt of cars in a given space. I think it's worth a trial to see just how much difference it makes, i think round town it would cause seroius jams. There are many things were taught to do on driving test, that just wouldn't work for real - like waiting for all cars coming round a roundabout before pulling out (reason for my 1st fail!)
Another thing that i find annoying is people for example on a mini-roundabout with a straight over and a left turn and they indicate right to go straight over- Why?

My pet hates:
1) Tailgaiting. It's just TOTALLY un-necessary and achieves nothing positive. I am with Jonnycool as to the reason this happens. Selfish, impatient, thoughtless people who are thinking about nobody other than me, me, me, I don't care about the speed limit, I want to break it and you're in my way, so I'm going to sit on your @ss......
2) Lane discipline on dual carriageways and motorways. If you are not overtaking something, not gaining on something quickly with a view to overtaking it, then MOVE OVER! Equally, when you're driving at 70 in lane one, then a numpty pulls up alongside you and matches your speed / fractionally overtakes you, but takes forever. This means you are now gaining on a lorry, you want to pull out to lane 2 to pass it - and you can't, because this numpty is now sat there, doing 1mph more than you... you can't really easy off, because another numpty is up your chuff, and chances are he's going to try and pull out to lane 2 first...
3) Texting and driving. I overtook a car on the M5 up by Brum a few weeks ago. I was in lane 3, overtaking. The young lady driving the car in lane 2 was totally engrossed in tapping a text message into her iphone, ocasionally glancing at the road ahead. Asking to maim/kill someone, and as Jonny rightly says - it's because of the "me me me" attitude, I haven't even taken time to think of the consequences of killing someone by texting and driving, cos all I care about is sending my text message so I'm a popular blah.....
4) Excess use of speed combined with bullying - mainly on motorways. Don't get me wrong, I'm actually not against speed on it's own, and wouldn't give a hoot about someone driving over the NSL within reason... apart from when there are aggrivating factors... for example, Mr Bloggs is doing an indicated speed of 80 in lane 3, nicely passing the van in lane 2, before he's ready to move over... when Mr Small Man Syndrome in his 5 series comes caning it up behind him at 130mph, looking like he's going to literally push him out of the way, and sitting right on his @ss, often with main beam flashing....
They are my main ones! :y

Me too. Number 4 especially.
In many ways, only having 2 lanes of motorway here often leads to better lane discipline, than when there are more. Unfortunately there are areas with 3.
Another one for me - motorway entrance;
a lot of M-way entrance slips here are a sharp bend, so you are doing only about 60 kmh once parellel with the main carriageway. There is then a long slip there for the obvious reason to use to pick up enough speed to blend into the traffic. There is then a bright spark* who decides to cut into the inside lane (sometimes across a very thick solid white line) BEFORE picking up the appropriate speed and ends up having 40 tonnes screaming down his back, or worst still, forcing the 40T into the outside lane.
bright spark* number 1 is the frightened driver. Must get onto motorway quickly before I get trapped in slip road. ???
bright spark* number 2 is the Audi RS6/8 or similarly powerful car driver. Lets boot it from 60 kmh in the slip road and straight out into the outside lane of 2 lanes. "I can out-accelarate them" he thinks. Wrong. A car coming done the ouside doing 140 - 160 kmh covers a lot of metres in just a few seconds.
Basically it all boils down to the very same thing as mentioned before. Me, me, me. ABSOLUTELY no thought for other road users. It really is worrying >:(

i agree with you there i have driven in germany and its a lot faster there so when over takeing lorrys i get flashed from behind because i am not going fast enough overtaking them the last time it was raining :y :y :y :y

Can be a bit 'airy for sure. Around here, in the border region with other countries, primilarly Luxembourg, the problems with the motorway entrance slips is worse. Well, I guess when you mix drivers from every European country + others from non-European countries, you're asking for trouble. ;)
Although the autobahns can be faaaaast, as you say, I generally find that the driving on them is quite good - in comparision. That said, only one third of all autobahns are still unrestricted. :'(
