I'm gonna be 41 soon and sometimes faceing the first frightening signs of ageing eg varicose veins and hanging muscles. Formerly I was commited sportman and nowadays the hardest task of my life is accept my age and my physicality . So I'm seriously thinking of beginning some fittness related activity but don't want to become ridicolous. Although I have quite good condition on my wife's opinion the mirror and my feelings says other...How do you handle your ageing and what would you suggest me?

A good healthy diet, take up walking but try to avoid running as it does your joints in, and try to avoid stress & worry as it's a killer. Just be sensible in your life style & enjoy it. :y

Try to accept it, there is no avoiding it, As above plenty of (brisk) walking in places you like to visit.

I've been over weight now for about 7 years, i've also been a social smoker which increased to 20 a day a few months ago. I woke up one morning a few weeks ago and decided that enough was enough and quit smoking and haven't touched on now for about 6 weeks. Two weeks ago I cut out sugar in my tea and yesterday I got my bicycle out for the first time in years and did a 10 mile bike ride. I intend to do the bike ride every other day trying to better my time each time I go out. I'm also going to start eating smaller portions, I hate salad even though I had one last night for tea but the shock to the system was just too much ;D
I really suffer with my knees, ankles and shoulders but the only part of me that is suffering this morning is my rusty bullet hole from the rock hard bike seat ::)
Pete, nearly 48 :'(

agreed, a healthy diet and daily exercise is compulsory (I wash my cars twice a day ;D joking)
I try to walk long distances and it helps me.. and try to eat fish instead of red meat but it keeps me hungry >:(
and cant stay away from sweets :(
I discovered that office job is a perfect killer :(
ps: 46 now, not a bad shape but I need to stop my apetite :P

Being serious, when I worked in my previous job I was under 11 stone and was fit as a flea due to the very physical nature of the job.
Fit as a flea apart from my spazzy leg that is,the job was wrecking what was left of the working bits of it.
I now do a job which requires little physical activity and I cant believe how unfit I am,Im 13 stone and moderate physical exertion leaves me quickly out of breath and cream crackered in a very short time.
Theres no way I can take up an excercise reigime which involve use of the legs - jogging, walking any distance, cycling etc. so what do I do ? :-\

Albitz, you are in high risk group.. :-\ if you cant exercise , you will loose breath first than inner organs cant be feed with enough blood .. do something :-\

Swimming? You can do it without your legs - it's just harder work (but then, that's a good thing if you're trying to get fit) - plus you might find it's useful as physio on the legs given the 'weightless' nature of it being suspended in water?
(Yes, this advice falls under "Do as I say, not as I do" .. as anyone who has met me will tell you is quite obvious!)

41!!!!!! You're still a youngster! ::)
I went to the gym twice a week up until I was in my early fifties but had to give it up due to the onset of arthritis that made it difficult to continue. So then started swimming a couple of times week doing around 80 lengths per session and that keeps you almost as fit as going to the gym and I enjoy it, although haven't done so much this year. I do however still enjoy a smoke and a few beers - after all, you've got to have a few luxuries. ;)
I think most blokes go through a bit of a mid-life crisis when hitting their 40's or 50's but you soon learn to accept the fact that you can't party like a teenager any longer or have the stamina of an athlete. ::)
-
Yep a healthy diet..always find something to do in the garden...d.i.y. on the car .just generally keep active...i am not in a position to go on long walks......imo the biggest thing is worry that will drag you down quicker than anything and realy affects your health i know.(been there ) we may look older but inside our head we dont feel any older, but we are ....cant lift things like we use to be able ,so never be to proud to ask for help.i am 68.....look 88...but feel 48....and i just love retirement and my family and friends and very satisfied with what i have.and life in general....so just live it.. :y

I hate swimming,I find it about the most tedious activity imaginable, but maybe I should try and put that aside and have a go at it.
I really do miss being physically fit. :(
The one thing I do have in my favour is that I eat quite a healthy diet. Apart from being unable to resist fresh cream.
Home grown fruit & veg most days, good quality fresh meat rather than the crap with chemicals & steroids from supermarkets, and rarely eat sweets, chocolate etc.

My diet is terrible. Veg on a Sunday only, no fruit. I tend to live on white bread :-[

Sitting here smoking a fag and eating a big bacon sandwich.. I have been thinking about getting fit for years but something always gets in the way. the only exercise I get is walking around a w/house for 6 hours a day. I will get around to it one day. :y
paul 48 on thursday.

with my limited knowledge I think I have to mention about some points..
long time ago about year 1939 one jewish origin german scientist (under the protection of Adolf Hitler) discovered that
human cells covered with saturated oil ,blocks its oxygen intake and the cell was forced to mutate.. so that it can obtain oxygen from sugar.. obviously this mutation causes cancer.. unfortunately this finding was prooved to be correct after many years and take some scientific rewards..
besides even without oil blockage if human organs/cells dont have enough oxygen, cancer may easily develop..
so for your health please keep this in your mind , whole your life.. :y
ps: fruits especially the red colored are #1 for protection/fight against cancer..

Got to admit i've turned into a complete fat barsteward in the last 5 years.
In fact from my old fighting weight of 12 stone, i've put on about 5 stone in the last 20 years due to eating processed cr*p and drinking too much beer. ::)
It was never much of a problem when I was in the RAF of when I had plenty of work on because I just burnt it off but nowdays it justs ends up round my waist line and nothing seems to move it :-[
Arthritis runs in the family as does cancer so I really shoud eat better and drink less but tbh, I tend to eat whatever is cheapest and quickest to prepare.
Right, off for a kebab ;D
-
Don't forget being fit and healthy is a lifestyle, not something done in the gym three times a week. Start small and take it in steps, that way it's easier and more manageable. You never know you might even start to enjoy it! I'm a vegetarian, don't have sugar on tea, don't smoke, don't drink much, have a good diet, eat little and often, do loads of exercise, bla blah blah, my cholesterol apparently was so low it couldn't be measured, good blood pressure, waking / resting / working heart rate of 42 / 48 / 60! Bonus! Just do it in small steps. I do have to stay fit for my job though which helps
-
Pie & chip day from the fishy today :P :) someones grandma i knew ate fish & chips every day smoked like a trooper but drank plenty of tea , lived to 93 :)
-
I'm a great believer in when you times up, your times up. Only trying to get healthier so I can enjoy the time i've got a bit better

Keep fit, eat well, don't spend too much time in the sun and don't get sun burnt and accept that gravity is always going to win it is just a case of how quickly. ::) ::) ::)
My fitness, strength and stamina were fine in my 40's, but I'm noticing the decline in strength and stamina as I progress through my 50's. >:(

41 is the perfect age to do your first triathlon. Do a super sprint or something small and see if you like it. I did my first one at 18 and I've been hooked ever since. Took a few years to get healthy again after I fell ill and i am back in full flow. I have a half and full Ironman lined up ofr next year with a target to reach Hawaii Ironman by my mid 40s :y

As I am lucky enough to have reached 75 and am (touches head for good luck) reasonably fit, I strongly recommend the male members of the forum to go to the WellMan clinic at their local surgery for an MOT, and, if over 45 or so, request a PSA and cholestorol check while there. Early warning is the way to prevent future ill health. :y :y :y

Whats a PSA check ?
it is a marker in your blood that signs if you had any prostata problem. :y
-
I must note , some of our organs are not covered with nerves, so you wont feel any warning or pain.. and is fed by only a single vena.. the organ I'm talking about is liver.. and when it gives up there is no cure for it..
take it serious..

I know what your saying cem :)
With the amount of sh*t i've been through over the last 5 years or so, i've totally let myself go and have turned from a pretty fit and healthy bloke into a total unfit fat basteward :-[
Trouble is, doctors tend to stick needles in you and i'm allergic to pain (unless I can give it back) ;D
At least i've turned into a anti smoking nazi and haven't had one for a few years now ;)
As for the liver, I drink plenty of guiness for the vitimain content so I should be ok on that front ;D

C vitamin and oxygen kills cancer cells .. (and anti oxidants which is found inside red fruits at high amounts).. at least it can stop/slow its development at early stages..

and for the liver, saturated fat diets or high alcohol will show on blood tests with elevated liver enzym levels.. and the most dangerous point is when they start to drop below normal.. liver sicknesses can not be determined easily and need complex tests.. many doctors/hospitals can easily fail to detect..
but from my family experience water collected inside peritonial area is the most visible sign.. (also heart failures can cause it)

it happens to use ladies tooo
god i have slowly noticed the weight appearing and need to do something about it before i cant.
it takes longer these days ( i know im not old lol past 30) but its not as easy as it was when i was 21) but i am determind to get toned and fit.
today is day one. went to the gym this morning nice run followed by some stretches. tonight took the hounds out used to run daily with them but they are also a tad un fit need to break them in gently.
i do have the added advantage that my motabolisum is quite fast i tend to eat when i want when i want, drip feed eat little and offten. cant do big meals
Gym kit is packed for tomorrow already, trying to decide whether to do get brave and do some weights or a rope work out :-\ :-\ :-\
-
My level of fitness has always been low so the down-slide to short of breath, aching cripple was a very short journey. ::) ::)
At the age of 50 I have just decided that I need to go on longer walks so I have parked the car an extra ten feet up my drive. :y ;D ;D
Well, it's a start. :y
-
In the last 18 months I've put on weight, where I've been spending too much time working and not enough fitness training. I recently started getting out on my bike a bit more and using my bike turbo trainer as I always feel much better when I'm fit and my resting heart rate goes right down to about 40-42bpm.
Cycling has always been my sport as I've always really enjoyed it. when I belonged to cycling club then I used to do 50 / 60 miles on a Sunday morning and 40 to 60 miles training a week. I've never been able to do long distance running as it cripples my muscles and joints, long brisk walks are fine.
Since my 20's my right knee has always been weaker than my left and as I've got older it has got more painful especially in cold damp weather and is starting to click. Getting fit by cycling actually reduces the pain, where stronger muscles help support its weakness.
-
A couple of tips I have practised for the past 50 years or so which seem to have helped: always run up stairs if possible, avoid using elevators or moving walkways, always walk briskly to your destination.....Oh I almost forgot, play golf 3 times a week! ;D ;D ;D :y :y :y
-
Blimey! 41? I had just quit being on the doors then! lol
ok now then believe it or not have never eaten vegetables in my life!! hate the taste! apart from peas and potatoes!! now i knew early on in spite of being extremely fit through weightlifting training etc that the no veg diet would do me no good later on in life, so i started taking multivitamins at age 25, just one a day gives me all the minerals/vitamins etc i need, currently just over 55 :-X walk everywhere its possible to here, ride the raptor for hours on end with me mates all over the campo here, mostly extreme trails(extremely hard work) White bread is my big fall down i love it, I can still put in 23hour days which happen about once a month, certainly 18hour days are pretty regular.,only drink for social pleasure,(3 times a week average) or when i have a big problem with a motor in the workshop lol as it relaxes me, still smoke 20 a day, still make love to the mrs at least twice a week, everyone keeps telling me to grow up and act my age(no chance) regularly lift gearboxes in cars on me own,
so what im saying mate is just enjoy life! make afew small adjustments if need be they will pay off later on,but do not worry about it! I still go out for a kickabout with the lads but less so now than before, still play golf irregularly, still seem to heal injuries pretty quick, so must be in quite good shape,
personally i reckon stress/worry is the biggest killer, as i have plenty of that with the situation out here i just dont let it get to me!! lol
well thats enough waffle from me go out and do somehting that aint boring plenty out there!! :y
-
i used to be super fit now
21 36 40 48 but under pressure from Mark a very alarming man i went to the kent meet and had breakfast, my diet was reuined and previous to that there was Newent with Bob the Dent and his sausages :o :o he knows how to do a sausage :) :) nice baps too..its just all gone down hill
even thought about joining OOFF omega owners fat furkers
-
I've put on a stone since my little bump in February, purely due to not being as active/mobile/agile :-[
-
i do a nice long walk every morning to the cafe, then its a 100 yrd sprint after breakfast to the pub followed by a large glass of yeast hops and barley supplement to clean out the toxins. come 11pits usually a large pita bread with salad and lamb with a little light sauce on it for flavour. Then usually colon hydrotherapy usually around the 5am slot to complete the cycle. :y

Thx for responses all, must admit I wanted to chat not only about fitness methods but ambitions that didn't get real eg interrupted degree at either some college or university that you used to desire and still desiring sometimes it to be completed. Do you have any view in point of it? How can you accept uncompleted stuffs of your life?

Eat drink and be merry my Grandfather always said :y :y He was 92 when he passed over no colestral counts when he was growing up, ate the fat of the meat had bread and dripping on bread on a Sunday and always enjoy a glass of stout. Happiest man i ever new, every thing in sensible moderation. :y :y :y

i do a nice long walk every morning to the cafe, then its a 100 yrd sprint after breakfast to the pub followed by a large glass of yeast hops and barley supplement to clean out the toxins. come 11pits usually a large pita bread with salad and lamb with a little light sauce on it for flavour. Then usually colon hydrotherapy usually around the 5am slot to complete the cycle. :y
