Maybe i jumped the gun as ive advertised my car as spare or repair :'(
Its developed a sticky ticking lifter , martin changed the oil and filter and added lifter treatment but its still doing it all be it a little quieter but not much .
Question is , how much would this cost to fix ? Should i still run it while its sticking , and believe the cams have to come out to replace the duff lifter .
Not sure what to do anymore other than put some different lifter treatment in :-\ :(

I wouldn't have thought a second hand lifter would set you back much more than the postage if someone had a scrap head. Yes cams do have to come out to lift the lifter out ....... there must be a guide somewhere :-\ :-\
Running it shouldn't really be a problem if it only sounds a bit 'tappety' ...... it might even fix it.

If you come over this way sometime got loads of lifters and cams mate :y pm me if/when any time mate :y

This is what im concerned about actually running it , i used the stp treatment so just wondering if this takes time to work . With cams coming out it will need new cam cover gaskets and timing belt kit due , starts getting more than i can afford to pay to fix :(

Thanks symes , i must say the car goes really well but the noise is putting me off driving it ???

if belt not to old it can be re used if not then just belt and cam cover gasket and as for the lifter it will be stiking becouse of dirt build up and i just removed mine cleaned them and replaced the same 1ns back 2 years ago and had no probs with them cince but that was on a buget :y
-
mate have you given it a run or did you do the usual=crikey its a bag of spanners and turned it off went indoors waiting for the world to end?? Been there =What you do is-----start it up put in gear and drive it-Trust me it will go away-if it dont save ya pennies and still drive it-over here and we sort it out But TBH noise will be gone by time you got cam belt-dont worry got Sykes&pickavant cam locking kit am a red-neck not a cowboy(Team red-neck racing Rover) :y :y :y

Hm never thought of that :) How long do you think the job would take to do ?

I took it for a run symes , gave it some welly but no different :( I did swear at it when martin left , engine wise its been really good until now so kind of thought its the last straw ???

Yep, lifters can take a while to refill once they've got air in them. They'll take a good while for the treatment to help too, if it helps, as they are a dead end as far as the oil system goes, so the treatment takes ages to get worked into the lifters..
TBH, the best bet is probably to get a 2nd hand head set of lifters, dismantle them and clean them out (maintenance guide available, IIRC), then swap them.

What symes says. Yes, the STP needs time to go through the lifter, they only hold a small amount of oil anyway, so it'll take a little while to do its thing & help clear any blockage. If it's only tapping & not making any heavy knocking, you'll be OK to run it.
-
Mate you should have heard mine 3 days like an jack hammer ;D ;D Loved it-turned up hendrix cd to drown it out ;D ;D
now quietand it done 240445miles and counting :y :y :y :y :y

it took me 5 to 6 hrs as i took my time and other things to do at same time

:o Its not quite as bad as that ;D Just use to the normal smooth engine sound . So i should be ok to run it and see how it goes . Should i add some Wyns treatment as well ???
130k on it

Isn't there already a lifter treatment in there? :-\

probably got highest mileage for year 2000 on forum mate TBH BUT could be wrong and its not a taxi its a parts chaser for me and mates-carried axles/v8s/wheels an all sorts of bits n pieces :y :y :y :y
Anyway EMD drive it mate dont faff around trust me and Andy B no worries she'll be right mate :y :y

Yeah STP i put in , but because it never worked instantly i thought about putting WYNS in it as well ..probably jumping the gun before the stp has worked ::)

Sounds good to me , if it gets worse ill be over to the ROVER shop ;D :y

Trust us mate it will take a while but if still there or gets worse let me know-it wont get worse but you know what I mean mate :y :y

IME, the STP stuff is pretty poor. At next oil change, pop some Wynns lifter treatment in, its better, but still takes a while to work.
As to using it, if its just a single lifter, using it is the best thing you can do. If its all lifters, I'd measure oil pressure.
Reminds me, I really should check the oil pressure on the MV6, given the strop that threw 30k ago ::).
-
I think if there was anything wrong with your oil pressure, it'd have put a leg out of bed long ago. ;)

I put the STP stuff in as it was the dearest and thought it would be the best , normally i would buy WYNNS
:'( I have not had oil light come on but the tapping sound has not gone away yet :(
As for checking oil pressure i havent got a clue ;D Car runs fine pulls very well as normal .

40 miles so far , ive not gave it any stick with the throttle through fear of causing more damage :-\

I guess my ears are tuned more to a softer sound from the v6 , cant smell nothing burning either which is always a good sign :)

As said earlier, the 'tappets'/lifters are at the end of the oil's path, and the lifters change their oil very slowly so it takes a while for the treatment to actually get inside each lifter, let alone do its thing in there once it's in there. ;) Don't worry about it.

This guy can waffle ::) Lifters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zu60ExxQjlg) although it gave me some understanding of how it works .

Hmmmm, can't quite remember what speed mine got really grumpy when Kevin Wood, Glassback and I were calibrating the LPG. I remember it was on one of the foot-flat-to-floor-to-check-it-doesn't-go-lean runs.
I always meant to investigate it, but the problem just went away (I guess the lifters settled down).
-
Still the same , no change at all in noise . Just have to live with it , its either going to go away or get worse and break :-X Bought some wynnes for backup , maybe another couple hundred miles will hopefully see it quiet :-[

50 miles mate , sounds horrible

after 50 more mate should get quieter TBH :y

Hope so , if not the last resort will be the wynns . Coming from the passenger side head , could whip the cam cover off and investigate when ive given up :(
-
Is that 50 miles solid driving or short journey's as it will only get better with a long journey ?

Is that 50 miles solid driving or short journey's as it will only get better with a long journey ?
Longest running constant journey has been 10 miles
-
Just thinking out loud.... I can't see why having stuck lifters/a stuck lifter should stop you from running it... and as suggested the more use it gets the more chance it has to burn off the crap.
I've noticed in this cold weather that mine makes a ticking on start up until warm. Then goes away. I've stuck some Wynns in. Hasn't made any difference. I've got an oil change due so will pop some fresh Wynns in with that.
However, again thinking out loud, that prob still won't sort it as we only do short journeys.
Defo going to give the old girl a big blast up north one of these days to see if that helps. also going to school and going to use their compression kit and leak down kit to see what sort of state the engine is in before i consider really spending any money on her
-
Its just the sound of tapping metal parts thats a bit off putting , im going to take the car for a decent run tomorrow and see if anything changes . Like ive said before the car has bags of power and no other issues than what i have with tap tap tapping
If the valve lifter is full of crap i cant see any amount of additive shifting it so will need cleaning or replacement ::) What about an Italian tune up ???
-
If its just the one littering I would give it some beans once the engine is properly warmed up. :y
Lifter, bloody predictive text :(
-
i will have to show you how to drive it properly then ;D
-
Post a video with sound from your mobile.
Wynns can take a little while, its not instant.
-
Cam covers and timing belt can be reused Steve :y
i'm defo of the opinion that compression and leak down tests should be done (assuming access to the equipment of course) cos then you can justify spending money on the car in the knowledge that the car's heart is in good shape.
e.g. if i do a leak down test and disciver i got a load of worn piston rings/worn bores, i would be inclined to scrap the car, strip it of all its parts to reuse (wish i'd have took loads more off ralph with hindsight) and then get another. there so bloody cheap at the moment.
sorry, slightly off tangent but just referring to your comment about being hasty with putting it up for sale :y

If i can keep the ole girl going i will but wont be spending more money on it than its worth , ill take on the comments about giving the wynns STP a while to work and give it some beans tomorrow .
The oil level is spot on so cant really add the WYNNS treatment as it will push it over the oil level ::)

its only a small bottle mate. i chucked mine in with my oil on the max ;)

Devil's and advocate here but, are you totally convinced these tests will tell you a great deal given the only issue is a noisy lifter

I think webby meant to test the general condition of his own cars engine mark , could be wrong ?
-
yeah just meant from general condition. If you have run pay loads to fix a problem you would want to know that once you spent it everything else was good. If you had some worn rings for example i wouldn't then wanna spend money or time on sorting out the lifter. I'd simply scrap it and buy a new one for 500.

Worn rings burn oil dont they ??? Not had any oil consumption issues . The car has never lacked power , in fact ive always thought the engine too powerful for the chassis ;D Off for a run in a bit so will come back with a report of any changes :-X

You need to sort the suspension out then, as its a stiff, capable chassis.

I had this same issue a few months back, i did a couple of oil/Filter changes and added this (Wynns Hydraulic Valve Lifter Treatment 325ml 76864 Oil Additive) on the 3rd change and the noise has completely gone, before i did this the knocking/tapping, whatever you want to call it, on cold start sounded like a tractor, noise now gone.

A few words of hope there then Miggy :y
Well ive done another 50 odd miles and still no change , just going to keep running it . Cant do anymore ;)
-
Sorry, just to clarify... like Mark says a compression test/leak down test won't help with solving a lifter problem (at least i cant see how)
but all i meant was if i was in a position where i had to spend a load of money for a particular job i'd like to make sure that there wasn't another big prob;lem lurking round the corner :)

Ralf 2 :-X
Im doing me best to keep this classic car on the road :'(

ahem -- big end -- ahem !
-
ahem -- big end -- ahem !
but a big end knock & a valve lifter tap are poles apart ....... :-\ :-\
-
Not happy at all with this tapping/rattling .. seems to be getting worse the more i drive it :( :( :( Its definitely not big ends , but thinking more along the lines of little ends or camshaft failure . Thinking all sorts at the minute and its looking like the new year will be heading for scrap yard :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
Any thoughts on what this could be ??? If it was oil pump failure would it of seized up by now ???

I'd post a vid of the noise, Steve

i honestly wouldn't fret though mate. theyre so dirt cheap on the trader, worst case scenario is you get a new one and take a bit of dough from the scrappy too. (ps, if you do end up scrapping it, which i hope you dont have to obviously, make sure you strip yours of everything valuable :y
-
The noise is more of a rattle now mate which comes louder then quieter , i still think its a lifter but surely it shouldnt be getting worse after the oil change and lifter treatment ???

Yeah hoping to keep it going till march but at this rate sure something is going to break :( I was considering another mot but with the noise i doubt it . Will strip it all out like you say .
-
defo worth a video mate. :y
if you do end up doing that keep EVERYTHING! i made the mistake of not getting every last bit of ralf ;D well, having said that it wasnt rewally my fault as i dont have dcent stands and wont trust getting under there to get all the bits i wanted like te cats. should have invested in stands then. but hey hindsight is 20/20 ::)

If it stops raining tomorrow ill try get video up , sad that its come to this ... going to miss the car but hey ho
when its gone its gone , plenty more omega's to play around with and cheap as chips :'(

ahem -- big end -- ahem !
but a big end knock & a valve lifter tap are poles apart ....... :-\ :-\
I once spent the best part of a fortnight chasing a lifter noise on an Omega. Changed lifters, cams and in the end cylinder heads on what was actually a big end failure. I could have sworn that it was a follower.
It comes down to this - I've opened maybe 20 Omega V6s over the years and I've never found one without knackered big ends. At the same time, I've never needed to change anything in the top end on any of these.

You can't say fairer than that ....... I've only ever seen failed big ends on the Pinto Cortina engine & that was many many many moons ago. ;D

Ime it can be quite difficult to tell lifter and exhaust manifold/egr/egr pipe leaks apart.
My old 2.5 had a slight exhaust manifold leak, which went away once warm. ( obviously that would have only got worse) This sounded very similar to noisy lifter(s) on my old 3.2 cured with oil changes and wynns.
Then there was TB's rattling Mv6 after fitting LPG, where, iirc, the combination of loose egr pipe and lifer noise was blamed.
Then there's Tunnies 3.2 with suspected low oil pressure. Again, first listen sounds like lifter, but it gets worse when warm at low revs, or something like?
There's plenty of options passed lifter noise.
But as said, post a video with sound.
-
Im putting my money on lifter/s , the noise increases and decreases with engine revs and definitely from passenger side rocker .. this does not seem like its going to go away in a hurry . Its not affecting the running/performance of the car in any way .
Im just going to run the car no matter what , ive changed the oil and treated for the lifters . If it lasts till march all well and good . Cant warrant spending anymore on the car trying to fix this then mot cambelt ect ect ;)
There's no easy quick fix for this problem , wish there was so for now ill hope it lasts :-\
Thanks for the advice folks anyway .
-
Sounds like lifter from your description. Cured mine with combination of Wynns and a couple of quick oil & filter changes. My advice add the wynns and carry on using it - oil changes 1k and 2K miles time ;) If the noise is getting on your nerves turn the radio up :y

Seems this is the only way to cure it if at all ... guess i was hoping for the noise to be gone by now after nearly 200 miles . Just a case of hearing if the noise gets worse then make a decision from there :(
-
Mine took a lot longer than 200 miles to clear - only other way is to strip out, clean re-oil and/or replace.
Patience is supposed to be a virtue ;)
-
Wonder if omega diesels are as tappy as this :( Maybe get another tin of wynns tomorrow and a set of boom boxes :D

is there any way to tell if you have a leaking exh. manifold? perhaps spraying some water around that area?

...will likely go up in steam. It's been a long time since I had an egr. This is pas side anyway, by the sound of it.
Still could be exhaust fanimold though. No?

I will double triple check to see if there is any sign of manifold leakage , replacement gasket not for the faint hearted so i hear :-\ Not really sure how to load a video , presuming it can be done on P'bucket ???
-
Ime it can be quite difficult to tell lifter and exhaust manifold/egr/egr pipe leaks apart.
But as said, post a video with sound.
is there any way to tell if you have a leaking exh. manifold? perhaps spraying some water around that area?
...will likely go up in steam. It's been a long time since I had an egr. This is pas side anyway, by the sound of it.
Still could be exhaust fanimold though. No?
thats what i was thinking. i may give it a go :y

exactly as you would upload a piccie mate... just browse through ''your videos'' instead :y

haven't you done that yet? ;D Yes p'bucket works. ;)

Nah , ive been hobbling to the bank today ;D And scraped the exhaust on a speed bump on the way back ::) As the car runs very well and its not put a rod through the sump yet it has to be one or the other ..that is lifter/s or what your saying the manifold but the manifold usually makes a popping sound not a metallic tap tap rattle sound . Ill check manifold to rule that out .
I take it there is no way of checking the lifters until its all in pieces with cam out an all :-\
-
Its not manifold leaking,it is more a tappety sound on passenger bank

Thats what i thought you said martin ;D Not big ends then :-X

I think it's more a case of keeping an open mind. Unless it actually is a lifter of course. ;)

Video , undecided now ...could be manifold gasket ???
(http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc41/milleblack/th_Video0000.jpg) (http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc41/milleblack/Video0000.mp4)
The more i listen to it the more im thinking its not lifters , a while back i use to get a slight blow from the manifold until it warmed up ... now if this is the manifold then its definitely blown now ??? ??? ???
-
I assume you have checked the fire-ring gasket that seals the downpipe to the exhaust manifold ?
From my experiences with replacing both manifold gaskets that noise sounds more exhaust related than lifters.
Might also be well worth trying to get car into the air and have a very close look( as best as possible) to ensure a manifold stud has not sheared allowing the face of the manifold to not seal with the head.
-
Could what i mentioned about the slight blow beforehand have any significance , and then its just blown altogether now ? Not quite sure what you mean about the fire ring .. will have to get someone to look at it :'(
-
There should be a thin gasket that fits between the exhaust downpipe and manifold .
It looks like a white asbestos type of gasket..think idea is it will expand when it gets hot to seal joint between bothe metaal surfaces.Worth checking gasket is there as you would get a "blow" from that joint and being high up the noise could sound like a leaking manifold.
Also check the nuts on the manifold/downpipe studs arent loose.
-
Ok thanks Amba , will do my best to investigate it ;)
-
Frequency sounds to slow to be lifter, and it's not "tocky" enough either.
Sounds like exhaust to me. Manifold to head gasket? Or perhaps lower down. :-X

I think i would sooner it be a gasket than taking the cams out , then again ::) :(
-
Maybe get Daz to have a look at it?
-
You might not wish for that if it is the N/S exhaust manifold gasket >:(
That is a real bitch to do

:( :( :( Suppose everything is do able with patience although i have read about some tough times trying to replace them .

Having heard your video mate don't think its a lifter. Sounds more like exhaust manifold to me.

Do you mean the gasket to the bottom of the manifold Amba ? On the bottom of these ...

Hmm. That does sound like a lifter to me. Pretty much how I remember the Silver Bullet when it suffered lifter issues. Sounds once-per-engine-cycle which would figure.
It's so hard to diagnose remotely, though. The noise sounds quite directional to me, as the camera is panned around. One idea might be to listen through a couple of foot of hose pipe to the ear. Run it round the cam cover and also around the exhaust manifold mounting to the block, from above and below. This really helps to identify the source of the noise. Is it only that bank that's noisy?

thats a bloody great idea!!! :y that should isolate the noise.
kev, i spose the fact that its happening once every cycle it should narrow it down to one (or two) lifters per cylinder???

was thinking on the lines of compression stroke...? As opposed to cam revs. TB's being a combination of both with egr pipe on derivers bank and lifters... I thought?
It's certainly not the same noise as my old 3.2 when I got it. Far more aggressive and repetitive per rpm. ...could have been more than one lifter though I suppose.
But as you say, difficult remotely.

It is only that one side but seems more noisier further down the side . I been thinking that if some exhaust paste can be smudged around the bottom joint i could see if the noise goes away , not sure if a hand can be got up there to do that though .

Not hijacking.... simply trying to compare.
This is the ''ticking'' I have. Car hasn't been started for a day and it's about 8oC outside...... (ignore the slight belt squeal, I actually only noticed it tonight)
(http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee402/webbybear1/th_IMG_0001_zps0dc55afd.jpg) (http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee402/webbybear1/IMG_0001_zps0dc55afd.mp4)
This is then after a drive when it's up to temp.....again bit of belt squeal but the ticking seems to have stopped.....
(http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee402/webbybear1/th_IMG_0002_zps8f6e550c.jpg) (http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee402/webbybear1/IMG_0002_zps8f6e550c.mp4)
If I had to say.... I think this sounds like ''light'' lifter crud build up. Feel free to comment.

ooops. bad last vid. two secs....

i agree mate. i got to be honest i dont think (although perhaps someone will disagree) mine sounds bad at all and i think (touching wood) the ''quick oil changes + wynns'' will solve it.
yours does sound loud. i'd defo do what kevin said and get some fuel line and try and isolate it.
-
Yeah i got some hose pipe i can use for that :y Yours sounds ok to me and like you say a few more oil changes wont do it any harm . Im hoping its just this gasket thats blown ......GASKET (http://www.google.co.uk/aclk?sa=L&ai=C0rJXuLPlUKXbIJKV0wXWkICIAfKh3ukC6ubGnjHytrTnbwgGEAEgl9TLBlCa0unKA2C7hrOD0ArIAQepAg5eUdBBJbs-qgQnT9BFpIGZ8ofDi3LMcKJTAyFwA8FWdDFI2nRbDB4YMmbJ_p6NnplogAWQTsAFBaAGJoAH4qXjHOAS6pX_w52hzY7tAQ&sig=AOD64_3HL628_ndWO-5so5Fu5rdXOyKAbw&ctype=5&ved=0CI4BEPQO&adurl=http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-134428-41853-0/2%3Fipn%3Dpsmain%26icep_vectorid%3D563391%26mtid%3D1673%26kwid%3D1%26crlp%3D13127387706_563391%26icep_item_id%3D251004321889%26itemid%3D251004321889%26icep_meta_categ_id%3D131090%26icep_etrs%3DN%26icep_epid%3D-999%26icep_ctlg%3D-999%26icep_cond%3DNew%26targetid%3D30013201266%26rpc%3D0.20%26rpc_upld_id%3D224%26icep_msku_flag%3Dn%26icep_cbt%3Dn%26adtype%3Dpla)
