Hi guys,
just called my local Vx dealer for a quote on the cambelt, water pump and aux belt replacement. i wanted to see what im going to save by doing it myself.
everything in, parts, vat and labour.
have a guess :y
-
£415.00
-
£415.............. LOL
-
Well that lasted long ;D
-
i ''lol''d because £415 is nowhere near ;)
-
ohh thought you were confirming that price
-
no my bad, sorry.

"You see, Sir, it's just more economical to scrap the car. May we direct you to our adjacent sales showroom? We have excellent finance packages on offer."
-
My VX dealer quoted £520 including a new water pump.
After pleading poverty we agreed on £330 including a new water pump.......which I think is reasonable.
Be prepared to haggle, Mr Webby. :y
-
:o
That's a disgrace!
How much labour were they quoting and a what rate, out of interest?
-
Wow!!! That's astronomical!! (have I spelt it right Andy B :D ;D ) only messin! :)
I had my Skoda's 2 belts done which involved the whole front of the car being removed i.e. bumper, grill, headlights etc.... and they charged me £350 with w/pump and all auxiliaries pulleys & stuff at a skoda main dealer. They even gave me a courtesy car free too.

i only rang them just to see what the price would be out of interest. when i had it done exactly 4 years ago it was what rob said... £415

I guess they don't want to do it. Probably nobody is old enough there to have ever done one before. ::) ::) ::) ;D

With the last Omega being more than ten years old, some Vauxhall mechanics, especially the younger ones, are not familiar with them. :-\ :-\
" What is it mate?"
"A Vauxhall Omega"
"Sorry mate, I ain't never fixed nuffin newer than one of them Insignia things.......Is it front wheel drive?"
-
And the dealers wonder why people go to independent garages or try doing the jobs themselves etc ::) :o
I'm guessing more than half of that quote is labour charges >:(

I've no idea what TIS says the labour time is, but you could easily have the job in a couple of hours. Even at £100 per hour it still shouldn't come to much more than about £300

I can easily see them trumping up the parts cost to another £300 so there we are, I suppose. ::)

Yes but no water pump replacement

3 hours when I last asked at Vauxhall dealers. These guys are old school Vauxhall so they know they can do it quicker but that's what the time-sheet says guvnor. :y

Prob not far off standard Audi service, given £100hr labour plus parts at retail it's to be expected.
All dealers are super expensive

Yes, remember the XF and the £300 bill I had for an oil change :'(

Not just cars, I was looking at bike servicing near my new place, they quoted good prices for tyres fitted, but check out their service costs:
http://www.bldgroup.co.uk/service-repairs/motorcycle-service/ (http://www.bldgroup.co.uk/service-repairs/motorcycle-service/)
£330 for oil change and some coolant :o
Mine does not need coolant, so that's £330 for an oil change and a check over ::)
Makes Vauxhall look cheap!

The bird at work I serviced the Renault for.....
She was quoted £159 for just an interim service. When I looked at the Renault site (out of interest again cos it makes me feel good to see exactly how much I've saved myself/saved someone) all they did was an oil and filter change and a ''25 point inspection''. so oil and filter and ''oh yeah your exhaust has gone''. utter rubbish! I got all the stuff for her for £35 and a proper job done including lubricating her brakes as they were new and still squealing after 2 months! no evidence of any lube at all and almost seized slide pins!!!!
I dread to think what the repair cost would have been of the coilpack I replaced for her. one CPP and it literally took two mins.

webby why water pump? cam belt and tensioners yes------but you got v6 so unless pump is shot--leave it alone :y :y
-
was just curious as to the price mate. not doing it on my car as, like you say, if it aint broke :y :y :y
-
Waterpump would have pushed it up, they are mega expensive from Vx now. Well over £100 on trade!
-
cheaper to fit inline electric pump :-\
-
cheaper to fit inline electric pump :-\
Why on earth would you want to do that :-\
Aux V6 water pumps are super reliable, around £45 for a good pattern one.
-
water pump robs power---thats why pro mods run electric pump and top fuel dont run pump at all-have got electric pump here
for my v8--if/when can be asked-was just saying vx prices are stupid--they want you to buy new car every year instead :(
-
Does make me laugh everyone who thinks a Vauxhall dealer is expensive for a service, seriously!?
Try similar at BMW, Audi ect. All much more, as Guffers quoted price for jag.
As for robbing power, these are 2ton luxo barges. Can't see an electric pump doing much :D

Of course. Comparatively speaking Vx (and Renault for that matter) are going to be a lot cheaper than the likes of BMW and Audi for servicing. For example my friends boss got a promotion or a bonus or whatever, cant quite remember and treated herself to a 2 year old A Class Merc. She was horrified when, enquiring about a major service at the Mercedes dealer, she got a quote in the £700 mark!!! A service!!!! Just cos they can ::)
My point though was more about what you get for your money. Renault being £159 for effectively just an oil change. Yes it's a lot cheaper than Guffer's £300 oil change. But both scenarios are daylight robbery imo.
The only downside for me is cos I did a good service, fixed the coilpack and check engine light removed and she was ecstatic now everyone wants their car doing at work ::) My answer being i'll do it if it's not French and I want paying! ;)

thats about right for an oil and filter on an XF 480 DAF. :)
-

Water Pump £129.00
Coolant 3 @ 3.90 £11.70
Aux Belt £35.25
Parts Total £320.95
Labour 3hrs @ £75.00ph £225.00
Sub Total £545.95
VAT @ 20% £109.19
Total £655.14
-
Thanks Andy :y
out of interest any idea why my total vat included quote is £43 more :-\
-
very close. im going to reveal that its £698.10!!!!!!! wtf!!!!!
what ? :o :o :o :o :o
you can change for the same amount in TL here ;D ;D
-
Part might be due to using 2 more litres of coolant :-\
-
might be because you not buying new car ;) ;) ;)
-
Three hours labour....its an hour and a half job on a 2.5

I've seen you do it in little over 45mins on a 1998 MV6 (so plenum lift required). Mind you, the pub was calling your name ;D
-
Yes, remember the XF and the £300 bill I had for an oil change :'(
price on my X type for a full service, all fluids and filters, and aircon, from jag main dealer..... £299 inc VAT
-
which BTW is £88 less than my Mv6 was at Vx dealer.

I skim-read the above, and only picked up the words:
bird
service
exhaust
stuff
proper job
squealing
lube
slide.
It wasn't nearly as interesting on second reading :P :D

No news here either.
It's why Oof exists. No?
... It wouldn't be quite so bad if they had a proper professionally behaved technician doing the job. But when you go round the back and see a hoody in each bay, shouting and screaming like its a monkey house, throwing stuff about and swinging off spanners attached to the under side of a car, you realise your being shafted.
In fact, the hoodys can't be on that much money either. But then that's the nature of most businesses these days. :(

And most of that is oil ;D

Yep, as if being charged almost £100 an hour for a retard isn't enough, they have the cheek to charge you for double the time the work takes? Or is that extra time for bodging up the things he broke? ::)
