Last night there was the first of two episodes on The Great Train Robbery of 1963, this one being a "Robbers Tale", the next tonight "A Coppers Tale".
I personally found it very good, and I am sure, although a dramatisation, as close as possible to what actually happened.
A question for all those interested in railway matters though: Although the fireman obeyed correctly the instruction by the driver to ring the signal box, conforming to Rule 55, why did the guard take well over 15 minutes to check on why the train had not moved for so long? Not only had the robbers got things slightly wrong in connecting the brake vacuum pipe to the dummy and not at first making a true seal for the engine and uncoupled mail coach to move forward, but they revved the diesel engine and made the mail (TPO) coach/rest of the train shudder. It was only once the vacuum reached 20 bar that they eventually got the BR driver to move forward the engine and TPO coach. Throughout this time the guard apparently heard or felt nothing, or at least didn't even react by looking out of his guards window, and just did nothing - was he asleep, or was there something more sinister?! I also understood that the guards compartment had a repeating vacuum gauge, so would he have not noticed the strange things happening with the vacuum?
Apart from this, and a tv aerial on a chimney of the farmhouse that was not around in 1963, I still believe this is a good production.
Tonights episode should be just as compelling! :y :y :y

Also there was a modern gas flue on the side of the farmhouse also plastic waste pipe ::) and as it was meant to be in august there was a little snow in a ditch and no leaves on the trees. ;D ;D :y But apart from that a very good drama and egerly await tonights coppers tales

I enjoyed last night's as well,looking forward to part 2 :y

well part 2 was not a let down I think it was better than last nights :y :y but just another couple of mistakes plastic double glazing in the hotel that reynolds was arrested in and concrete sleepers which I doubt were around then. ;D

I will have to catch up with part 2 as swmbo wanted to watch the other side, enjoyed part 1, but also enjoyed the TV Mrs Briggs, disappointing though as I though the end might have been different, knowing what happened before........ :D :D

Continuity errors really piss me off. : :-[
Otherwise not a bad watch. ;D

I noticed that the white Plod Mk2 Jag came a with a full length sunroof........ :-\
Unlikely I think. :)

I'm going into hiding when she does, besides it's STEMO's fault.
Set in 1963 with music from 1967 :( Then again who cares :y

Lots of errors on the railway side.
A class 37 loco with high intensity headlight (rather than a Vac only 40)
Running on single line for many shots
Wrong line for the robbery (hence why the second man crossed the down main to call the signal man)
Engine stopped during the shots of the robbery, then instantly running again when they go to leave.
Enegine sound was of something that was not EE!
Horns were very 'foreign' sounding
The 'train theft' from the shed was equaly bad, takes a good 15 mins to get air up before you can move off.
As for the vac leak, they started by showing air escaping (on a vac setup!) and a twin exhauster diesel will easily pull 21 inch of vac with such a small leak.
Watchable but niggly bits for me

Train spotters the lot of you! ;D ;D

As Leatherslade Farm is just up the road from me, and the fact that I did my toolmaking apprenticeship with the owner, who's lived in it since the robbery (his parents owned it before him), I thought I'd have a quick look for nostalgia reasons. Sadly it wasn't filmed out this way so I gave it a miss so can't comment on the program.
Sounds like it was worth watching, continuity errors aside.

Of course you are right Andy :y :y
i have never got the hang of pressure/vacuum readings, and usually get confused when they are quoted in the books I read. ::) ::) :y :y

I noticed that as we'll Option, and agree it must be an unlikely feature in a police Jaguar.........although lovely in a chivvy version :y :y :y

I knew I could rely on a diesel fan Mark to notice such flaws!! :y :y :y
Very interesting stuff which makes such drama's worth the watch! ;D >: ;D Did you, or anyone else, notice the distinct sound of a steam locomotive pulling the TPO when the diesel was meant to be moving it?! ;D ;D :y :y :y :y
In "A Coppers Tale" last night, it showed Chief Super Tommy Butler walking down a single line in the lead up to an obvious loop. So not only was the shot of the train during the night of the robbery shown on the wrong line, but in other scenes it was on a single line.
I wish these productions showed more care with the accuracy of what they are trying to convey

Weren't they conveying a train robbery .......... and not a history of diesel loco's? ::) ::) ;) ;)
(I've recorded them, but not watched then yet though ;))

Yes. The less anal among us probably thought it was just cops and robbers. ;D

This is always an interesting observation and a realistic one. However, with these productions that are trying to show the "historic" facts of the subject I believe it is important to "get things right" in terms of settings, costumes and practical aspects, including all props. It is like the Downton Abbey production team allowing a 1940 Rolls Royce in a scene meant to occur in 1920. No, they correctly used Rolls Royce's and other vehicles contemporary of the period shown, and that is in a fictional story line. If portraying an historical incident, then it should get most, if not all, spot on in terms of contemporary portrayals. It does affect the enjoyment of those of us who note such detail, and expect professionals in their game to meet those standards of quality. It can be the difference between a good production and an excellent one :) :)
Just my thoughts! :y :y

As the guy on the telly said " Trying to recreate a night in august down sarf, on a single track in Yorkshire in April with four feet of snow was nigh on impossible"
"But we think only the anally retentive will notice".
I made the last bit up. ;D

Just wait until the Americans remake it :D
-
Yeah the loco will have a massive 'cowcatcher' on the front of it!! ;D ;D ;D
-
Except, to the Americans, it wouldn't be the great train robbery, it would be the great petty cash snatch.

Did they not do it with 'Smith and Jones'?............ ;) ;)

Just to be pedantic , the land rover they used at the farm was wrong , early ones had the headlights in the radiator panel NOT in the wings
