with kitchen appliances out of action for a day or so I was requested to go get fish and chips last night.
WTF - £4.60 for a piece of haddock, £2.40 for chips - what is going on?
-
about the same as what ours charges.
i wont order a fish from ours ever again, had 3 from there on seperate days and all full of bones >:(
-
Fish sounds about right for price, but chips are nearly doulble what ours charge :o
-
I think it used to be 2 shillings including a soft drink.
I would like to eat f and c strolling the promenade at Blackpool I must admit - or has that changed as well?
-
When I were a lad, I could get fish and chips for a tanner. :y
-
Christ on a bike, there are some perks to living up north, my local takeaway is £4 for fish and chips, and its lush.

-
It's grim down south ;D ;D

We need an OOF Good Grub Guide. Online, I'm not suggesting we publish a softback alternative to the Michelin guide...

Not sure about this - we will probably get treated to a review of the Wakefield Tripe House before we know where we are. You might have to price band it to sort the wheat from the chaff.

I am so disappointed that's not real. *proud bloody northerner*

The weatherby whaler is a fine establishment for fish and chips in Wakefield. You'd be hard pushed to eat the 'whaler' as well, it's bleeding massive. I think that's about £8, just for the fish. I shall look on Friday when I go.
And don't call me junior :P

Sounds like Sandhurst is paying through the nose for everything to me, rob the rich to feed "the poor plebs in the low lands" ::) ;D

That's right, Mike. The fourpenny fish was only a tail though, skin on.

About £5.50 from Captain cod near me, fish is that big they have to snap it in two to get in the container :y
-
We don't have fish and chips often, as the 3 chippies here in Brakkers are now all shite. I seem to recall its around £8 for cod, pie and a large chips (we share the chips).
If they were any good, I might accept that as value for money, but they are rank, we only have in emergencies - like last Friday when we couldn't get a table or a takeaway from anywhere else on our way back to Brakkers... ...something to do with the date
-
Nothing beats a nice romantic KFC ;D

No KFCs around here... ...probably just as well, given the effect they have on me

Now, of course the real mark of a decent chippy, do they do spam fritters? :)

mmmmmmm.....I could just eat a spam fritter...or six.....
-
Maybe I'm out of touch.
I thought that cod and chips was about £1.50 these days. :'(
Why so expensive? Fish and chips is supposed to be cheap nutritious peasant food. :-\ :-\ :-\

Two small cod, 1 small chips, spam fritter, spring roll. £11 near us.
And the chips are in a box, which means they aren't steamed and hold some crispness by the time they are home. Ordering to eat now get wrapped in paper. :y

You can still get fishcakes and fish patties for a quid or two, but the price of fish has gone through the roof.

£7.10, not too bad at all.

Morrison's In-Store cafeteria, fish, chips and peas (mushy or plain) for £4.55 - but not served after 4 PM.
Sometimes they have a drink included, and on rare occasions a half-price promotion!
Ron.

Best I ever had was in Aberdeen . . . long way from here ;D ;D
Scarborough was good as well ;)
I find the more Northerly the better . . don't know what they fry them in but it ain't the yuccy oil they use down here in the south :( :( :(
-
The chippy at Potter Heigham Bridge is one of the best I have been to... proper chips. On the face of it a total shithole, the trout behind the counter leaves nothing to be desired, at all. Made the mistake once of trying to have a conversation with her ::)
Better off season than on, and never eat in the restaurant as they'll serve you oven fish and chips ;D
Best fish and chips was either from the chippy just south of the river in Brora, or from the chippy in Cobo on Guernsey 8)

Had a cracking Whale and chips on the front in" Winking Willy's" last summer, possibly the best fish I have ever tasted :y

I was going to recommend the same, God that takes me back...
Hexham Fish Bar is fantastic, if anyone's on their way to see our Northumbrian correspondent...
-
Best fish suppers I've had we're in Oban and Wells Next The Sea. Expensive but worth it.
Sadly, fish n chips is a treat nowadays.
