Well well seems that theres more to my car than the seller stated. >:( >:(
My V5 arrived today and it states the car has "Substaintially repaired and /or Accident Damaged;Identity checked 01/08/2014.
Now this is the bit I find annoying/offensive...both myself and mechanic friend asked the history and what was wrong, chap lied through his teeth about smell of oil being where he topped up as its the cam(s) cover...and various other stuff that we agreed could be sorted.
The chap selling was selling on behalf of his grandad..when we questioned why the log book stated 2 months ownership as opposed the advertised 2 yrs we were suspicious, add on the house is next to a Local second hand car dealer and the car was surprise surprise MOT"d at the very same garage,we both chuckled and said the owner was selling through his grandson to avoid being held liable as a dealer/trader.
Anyway ive googled the owners name and surprise surprise he is the Garage owner...so phoned him and was told the car sat for 2 yrs and the fact its been a write off is and I quote "None of your F--ing business and whats it got to do with you...followed by more abuse and told to F--ck off and don't bother him again.
Charming chap huh.
So is there anyway (Free) to check what Cat write off it was/is and what the VIC test tested...assuming it could have been a dented bumper or complete front end smash,so just for peace of mind and before throwing it around any more corners,id like to find the accident history. :y

There are some cheap vehicle check websites. They charge about £4. Maybe you could start there?

I saw that car add...it was on there at least twice....I enquired about it but it just some how did not feel right,,the guy was a bit evasive,so I decided not to bother......As he is not a (trader ) lol......and as a private seller he does not have to declare it as a repaired vehicle,,So it is the old phrase...buyer beware.....but the guy is a lying swine and he will get his just deserts some where down the line... >:( >:(
-
If its stated on the Log book its a cat C
Cat D does not appear on the V5
Txt Ctc reg number to 83600
(That's ctc space then the reg number.
Costs £3 from a contract phone, not sure if it works on pay as you go.
-
Just read the other reply and yes I think that is correct,,,,but on another forum I read it states that private sellers do not have to tell you about it....It is wrong for him to down right lie to you,but even proving that could be a problem.....If the car drives ok and has a genuine m.o.t. but he did not tell you about cat .c.....what can you do...I realy hope that there is something you can do about it so I wish you well on finding out the facts and putting that scum in his place :y :y
-
Yep does work on pay as you go as I have done it on several occasions :y
-
The VIC check is only an identity check to ensure the car has had an id swap, they don't record and are not interested in damage or what repairs have been carried out :y
-
I would put car through an mot by somebody you can trust and see if it is all above board.
-
Might be worth sending a copy of your description of what happened to the local trading standards so they can add it to his file.......
Leopards don't change their spots - trading standards maybe unaware of of how he works (or they may be waiting for one more transgression before acting).

Bloke owns the garage (Car sales)...so yes he is 100% a dealer...lol
The deal was done via his grandson...still owed by garage owner.

Thought that was the whole idea of the VIC check...my Galaxy has been written off and im told it needs a VIC check to ensure repairs have been done properly.
Shame the seller wasn't a bit more honest as I love the car and despite a few known faults,it drives and looks amazing.
Why lie about something and then get aggressive when caught out...sorry mate would have gone along way. ;)

Nasty lyin rogue trader >:( I can ask my bro-in-law (highway maintenance) to nip around & dig up his road to a depth of 30 or 40 feet & then just bugger off ;)
-
VIC is purely to verify that the vehicle presented is the same as the one written off.
My V5 says summat along the lines of substantial repair/accident damage OSR quarter. In reality it had a new bumper, wing and tailgate. To be presented for a VIC it first needs a fresh Mot. The fact is that the VIC is carried out by VOSA at a VOSA test station, so rest assured that anything dangerous will be picked upon.
Sellers only need to answer direct questions, rather than volunteer information...

Nasty lyin rogue trader >:( I can ask my bro-in-law (highway maintenance) to nip around & dig up his road to a depth of 30 or 40 feet & then just bugger off ;)
Nope that would inconvenience everyone ::) besides, the seller has only lied if he has knowingly answered a specific question falsely. Had Stuart specifically asked if the car had been written off, wnd the seller replied no, never... Then he has lied. Even a basic free dvla check will tell you the VIC status... Just because you're spending £40 rather than £40k doesn't mean that you shouldn't have an Hpi check done.
Tough shit by the sound of it...
Btw, my car has a Cat C VIC marker due to a broken screen and twenty or so stone chips, so might not be such a big deal...
Besides, at £475, it's hardly going to be perfect ::)
-
Sorry but the way I read this is that you looked at the car, there were a couple of items that were questionable, you never did any history checks on it and you thought the seller was dodgy. You then purchased the car and stated it seemed a bargain for £475.
To me if something doesn't seem right or something seems too good a deal, then either walk away or dig deeper, Always HPI check any car you want to buy because a £40 HPI cost is less than losing the value of any car....
-
Anyone got a link to the ad :-\

It is a bargain...but what has annoyed me is the fact the seller lied through his teeth,he was asked many direct questions, seems like quite a lot of them he lied about.
As said if he had been honest then bang on,no grumble as would still have bought the car...id have appreciated him saying what had happened to it to cause it to be written off.
Now that's EXACTLY what I asked the owner last night and was told to F--k off....so yes ive asked a direct question, wouldn't want to return the car regardless of the Previous damage, but would be good to have been told.

Theres no tough shit as im happy withy car...but as said the seller should have been honest, hell he even listed it on Ebay without any mention of the known faults.
I took a mechanic friend as I needed his expert opinion...what if some poor sod had bought it on ebay for £750 + and then found out the faults, whilst its not ideal to be honest when selling a car, theres not offering information and then theres blatantly taking the piss. ???

Yes true, but shows the attitude of the seller...point is seller tried to take the piss, luckily I took my mate along,so it didn't work for them and that's why I paid £475 and not £750.
Silly me when I sold my Galaxy first thing I said was "Its classed as a total loss"" ok so total loss was a track rod end...but at least I was open about it.
But seems that some of you agree with with holding the fact a car has been written off previously...wont be buying any motors off here ::) :y
See if the seller had said it had been a write off and offerd the info "Needed rear bumber or " needed XYZ"...yeah no worries glad to know, instead its ended up as a debate and highlights the fact the seller is a lier.
Oh also lied about the fact it had been sat 2 yrs in garden...hmm old MOT"s suggest different as does the increasing mileage...lol.
But hey whats it matter..i love my new car...love the price paid and learnt never be honest when selling a car. ;D

So what did you want for £475.
Honset and motor trader don't go together.
Also its got 12mths mot,if not happy punt it.(gumtree)

That's the point...the bloke lied about being involved with the garage....he lied about many things.
Ive got exactly what I expected for £475...but that's got nothing to do with the fact the blokes a bare faced lier.
Question for you...I come to buy a motor from you (assume your a private seller) would you offer the fact its a write off or would you keep quiet about it.?

I would not worry too much about the fact it has had a VIC check . . . at least it has had this check & passed.
I had a situation where I did not know (and was not told by the seller) that the car had been a total loss/ non economical insurance write off.
First I heard was when DVLA would not issue the new V5 in my name until a VIC had been carried out :o
I brought the car after seeing it & the VERY VERY minor damage ( small dent in wing m small scrape on both passenger doors. Seller told me car was clipped by a dustcart out side his house when his wife was in it about to pull away & that she would not drive it anymore . No mention that he had been paid out by the insurance company .
But , the same as you , I really liked the car & knew it would be back to A1 with less than £100 spent on it.
What is worrying is when you read the notes on the post VIC V5 . . ."substansially repaired or accident damaged" as in most cases it's not & it could just be minor damage or something similar . With omegas not being worth much . . . does not take a lot to be "an uneconomical write off"
You're lucky you have not got to go to the VIC check "circus" . . in my case it was a nightmare >:( >:(
-
Most car dealers/ resellers lie about a variety of things. I have yet to meet a completely honest car salesman. Franchised dealerships are known to have disconnected odo's whilst transporting cars between branches to keep mileage to a minimum. Transport accidents are repaired and the owner of a new car often isnt told anything about it. The buyer thinks he is getting a brand new car, whilst in reality the car has been repaired/repainted.
Private sellers are often worse. Cars that have spent their life on a track get advertised as "single lady owner".
Such is life. Caveat emptor.

That's pretty much it Al...I was just freaked when read that ."substansially repaired or accident damaged" after walking in from work. ;D
And yes fully agree these old motors are not worth very much now,so chances are it could have been something very minor, which is why id have thought the seller or the owner would have mentioned it.
Cheap as chips for the price...little honesty would have spoken volumes about seller and invariably gained him work as the car was serviced and MOT"d at the garage for several years,so them knowng the car would have made sense to me for them to carry on looking after it. :y
-
Even at £750, what looks to be a clean and tidy car with a years ticket and history is still a good deal...
My ex police, ex taxi, 270k mile thrice written off 3.2 estate was valued at £950 last time it was written off, and were it not for the recently discovered crack in the screen, it would be on the road, (currently sorned with no MoT, but apart from the screen, totally roadworthy)...
If you do a dvla check on my car, it is still showing a VIC Required marker, mostly because I cba to get it done :-X do a handfull of stonechips really make it dangerous :-\ Didn't think so ::)
The fact that the seller (or his grandson) have owned the vehicle for a long period of time and have bothered to get the VIC done actually says more than you give them credit for. And were you to ring me, effing and blinding about summat that you could easily have found out independently and accusing me of things, then I would probably react in kind... as would you if the shoe was on tother foot.
Besides, I'm not sure they have actually done anything wrong by selling the car 'out of trade' if it was their personal transport (ie registered to and maintained by themselves) :-\
As for not buying a car from anyone here, well more fool you... as that kind of statement really misses the point of the forum.

Actually you've assumed quite a bit mate...all of it wrong.
I most certainly didn't phone up effing and blinding, why would I....?
Secondly I didn't say they owned the car for a long time...I said it was MOT"d serviced at the garage and was obviously known to them, most likely a customers car.
Seller stated they owned it for 2 years..log book showed the owner having it 2 months roughly, the VIC test was said to have been done 2 years back...it was done 1 month after the seller bought the car.
If you think its ok for a dealer to pass off a car as private when they are traders...then I wont be asking your advice when buying the next motor. ;D
And as for the line about not buying from here (ive bought several over the years) I was referring to the person who stated "Why should they declare a write off"...well break me sideways if that's an honest friendly seller id rather take my chances on Ebay. :y
Nearly forgot...my mate found numerous faults which none had been advertised,so no at £750 to someone who would have to use a garage for repairs it would have been hideously expensive to fix.
-
Assumptions were based on what and how you typed...
Alot of crying and belly aching for a £475 car that you CBA to check out properly... :-X

Ahhh belly aching and crying...wtf...ive stated the seller was and is a lier and you think its my fault.. ;D
Ive stated numerous times...im chuffed to bits with my car,but that's because I have the support to have it put right at reasonable costs.
Id hate to think some poor bugger buying it not knowing things like the cam covers leaking will be an expensive fix...add it possible coil packs and hourly rate at garage and its a money pit...that's before the HID"s needing attention or the other niggly faults.
But as said ive factored them into the price I offerd,so the CBA comment is 'dangle berries'. :y
Id also suggest going back and slowly reading what ive written...belly aching or simply stating the seller was a lier...big difference.
-
Alot of what you have subsequently said contadicts what you first said... for example...
Seller stated they owned it for 2 years..log book showed the owner having it 2 months roughly, the VIC test was said to have beendone 2 years back...it was done 1 month after the seller bought the car.
Suggests you knew it was a Cat C...
Was or was the car not registered to an actual person (who happens to own a garage) rather than the previous keeper or even the garage itself? Did it have a complete V5? what did that say regarding the VIC?
Did you or did you not carry out independent checks to verify the complete history of the car?
Blatantly obvious faults such as leaking camcover gaskets are not 'hidden' unless you are physically prevented from looking under the bonnet. Besides, buying a second hand Omega is likely to cost you £700-£1k in rectification work in the first year alone, especially if you are spending less than £2k on it...
-
Don't really see where the OP is going with this thread :-\
He has inspected the car , bartered the price down by over 30%, got a fair car for the money it seems.
Highly unlikely that you will buy an omega for that money without it having issues of some kind.
His point seems to be that he wants all of us on here to agree with him that the seller or relation to the seller in this case is
a liar :o
That person , being a car dealer, that could well be the case , but until I have actually met or had dealings with this person,
I for one will not be agreeing with that >:( >:(
It seems to me OP that you are beating yourself up for making some very elementary mistakes when buying a used car ::)
For one, if you had bothered to look at the V5 , it would have told you that the car had been VIC checked at VOSA & that
it was subject to previous insurance related damage ;)
-
Ditto :y
-
Of course the sellers not going to tell you its been in an accident why would he. For him hes found a
sucker buyer who hasnt bothered to do his home work :y
what colour is the car stuart?
-
Dark blue judging by the pics :-\

Is it a cat C...ive no idea.
No I had no idea it was a write off...the log book had no record of it,only thing it stated was Number plate couldn't be transferd/changed.
Yeah car was registerd to the owner of the Garage, this was denied at the time saying they had no connection with the garage,so again I ask why bloody lie...and as ive stated the seller stated the owner had owned it 2 years, the log book stated 2 months to which we were told that's a misprint.
New log book (I received) shows the message as stated previously about accident...ive then gone on line after and found the VIC test was done 1 month after the owner bought the car,and that was July this year.
As for the cam covers being obvious...yes to an experienced Omega owner or someone who knows what they are looking for,for your average bloke in the street no its not obvious, esp when asked "Any leaks from cam covers as there common fault" and to be told no mate just a drop of oil where we topped up.
End of the day ive highlighted a dodgy seller and you just want to pass the blame...what a self righteous idiot you are.

Beating myself up for buying a cheap car that makes me smile from ear to ear when driving...don't think so AL,merely stating that the seller was a liar.
But seems that people on here don't think the fact its a write off needs to be mentioned when selling a car...as said wont buy off anyone here.!
As stated Al NO MENTION ON V5 ABOUT ACCIDENT...we looked and mate is in the trade so knows what a V5 looks like.
As stated previuously to the other moron why not SLOWLY read the original post...digest it and you might half a idea of what im talking about. ::)
But hey opps it...I wont bother with you bunch of self righteous self-abusers...keep the love yeah. ::)

Put the reg of a car onto autotrader as if your selling it and it'll tell you if its a cat c or d.

Not always, just put a CAT D car in, that I know is defo a CAT D, didn't show on Autotrader.
