Title: New wheels
Post by: dbug on 23 May 2015, 21:36:29
Not been on for a while - fed up with inane comments from the keyboard warriors on here.

Thought you may be interested in pics of my new wheels, an XJ, not new but only 30K, complete with 2 year Jag warranty - collect next week from Jag main dealer.
Its a petrol (don't like weasels altho impressed with the 3 lit one I test drove) - the 5.0 lit V8 - 0-60 4.4 secs

They are certainly a nice car.  I'm not convinced about its arse - in fact I thing the Jag designers were smoking the wrong shit when they got to that bit.

Good luck with it :y

;D, that's the thing with "art", one person will love it, the next will think its back is pig ugly ;D.

Its due to the rear styling, I think I'd prefer an XF, even if you do miss out on some of the extras.

Having owned a couple of Rover 400 saloons, with similar pig ugly rear styling, you can always live in the knowledge that you don't have to look at it when you're in it Dbug ;D

And anyone following won't see it for long either, as you disappear into the horizon.

Exactly, just what proper Jags always did.

The nose down stance and heavy rear quarters(which have always been Jaguar's style) look good hoovering up the road.

I'd love one, but with a dark interior.

Out of pure bizarre stylistic interest (dbug may find this interesting) the rear lamps are designed to look like cat's claws dragging downwards (look carefully you can see vertical stripes). One of them little quirks that drop into car styling. Oh, and other that I know of, the headlamps are made to echo the silhouette of an E-Type.

Terrific car love them.

Interestingly for many years now I've thought 'what will replace my Omega' there is, of course, no replacement. But that simple criteria of 'it's about 10-15-20 years old. Quality. Saloon. Very well specced. Comfy. Reliable' for a while I've thought that a Volvo S80 maybe. But given the quantum leap with the current XF and XJ I'm thinking that sub-£1000 luxo-barge may be one of these, one day.  :)

The XF is a great car but the styling is dreary and reminds of the Lexus GS300. :-\

Lovely car :y and at 4.4 for the 0-60 sprint it's in the properly quick category, too.. that's a second faster than my M3 and in the real world you aren't going to be far behind a Lamborghini Gallardo..

..not that a gentleman Jaguar driver would ever take part in a traffic light Grand Prix, of course.

All the 5.0 are supercharged or am I talking bollicks?

I was picked up in one from Dubai Airport, and politely asked the Driver to give it some, of which he obliged... I was underwhelmed........ until he said we were doing 110MPH and needed to slow down.  I thought we had achieved around 60.  It was sublime.

If I could afford one, I wouldn't buy one.... but, then again, maybe I would!  :-\

Its a button for opening the electric boot - only works if car unlocked and alarms unarmed.

If you'd paid £44k for it and it was under Jaguar warranty I'd suggest you only let a VAT registered garage do any work... but of course that would be entirely your call.  The cost of parts alone is eye watering mind... :o

Pencil sized metal rod with plastic bush... That'll be £300+VAT sir.

Firstly I would never pay that money for a car as it's about due to depreciate by about 8k odd in the next year. Or someridiculous amount....?

Hence, any car I own will not be in warranty. Hence no eejits! Seemples. Any LPG conversion would void the warranty anyway. Obviously.

Maybe in a few years. ....or maybe a proper car, a vxr8 instead. ;)

Will be interesting to see if these modern jaguars remain reliable into old age for sure.

I'm not a fan of LPG at all. There seems to be way too high of a correlation between "LPG" and "spares or repairs" on Ebay and the like.  But whatever makes folk happy I spose.

Will be interesting to see if these modern jaguars remain reliable into old age for sure.

I'm not a fan of LPG at all. There seems to be way too high of a correlation between "LPG" and "spares or repairs" on Ebay and the like.  But whatever makes folk happy I spose.

I'm a great fan, there seems to be a great correlation between running the car I actually want, which currently an omega, at a price that is more sensible. ....there are some marques I wouldn't gas like any ford, or anything French but I also wouldn't own a ford or anything French most certainly.

Round these parts, the savings are getting trimmed by the extra journeys to find fuel.

Did I mention the local BP is run by, and staffed by, effing retards?

Still, rear tyres are lasting better

50k on LPG here, trouble free miles  8)

Cost on wallet of effective 55mpg, what is not to love?

One day the 3.2 maybe converted.

Both really need some TLC though. Just don't have the time  :(

Mine's done 180,000 odd miles on LPG since it's conversion at 50,000 odd!  :y

Payback on both of mine was about 8000 miles.

Depending on petrol and LPG prices,  and based on my annual 15k mileage, up to 2k a year at the height of fuel prices. So almost 8k ignoring the recent slump in fuel prices.

....according to this anyway :-\

It is not just the service costs, it is also the price of parts. And I dont think there is an equally accessible TC for JLR. I may be wrong, but even doing things yourself, the costs of something going wrong on these cars will be enormous. Plus they have a few electrical glitches. Something like plugging in a USB stick to the infotainment system causing all kinds of electrical faults. Updating SAT nav software killing the entire system and so on.

I have no idea about LPG conversions but I assume it causes problems on top of any usual ones experienced?

It can complicate matters, but get the engine in tip top condition re cam covers and ht and it should be fine with good set up.

Just to derail the thread further, as I'm planning a conversion over Christmas this year. What real mpg do you get on gas from the 2.2? Mine (auto) currently gives about 28mpg on a mixed commute. I'm anticipating 20% ish drop in mpg on gas so about 23.

Tunnie's 2.2 is a manual, so will fair much better in urban mpg (and thus in mixed).  Plus he drives like grandma, and doesn't use the rev range (just as well, as his vapouriser is a bit small for his car, so errors back to petrol about about 4k).  I suspect he's managing high 20s to low 30s on LPG.

I think your figures shouldn't be too far off to be honest, maybe not quite such a drop as 20%.  Remember, you will still use petrol (warming up, when you run out of gas).  I'd say a 30-35% saving on fuel bill is quite realistic.

You need to fill when nearly empty - short filling or filling when only half empty seems to severely impact MPG, I can only assume quite a lot is lost in the filling process.

Excellent tip, thanks. 30% Saving is great, means itll pay back in <1yr given my current mileage. Should also give me a good idea of range vs tank size. If I understand the guide correctly. Actual capacity of a tank is roughly 80% of nominal capacity?

Correct, so an 80l tank accepts approx. 65l of gas when properly set up (its easy to set tank incorrectly so it takes less or more, which would need adjusting).  I personally wouldn't go below an 80l tank, or if an estate the very biggest you could get, even if you have to raise floor by a couple of inches.
