In response, a Sky spokesperson said: "Despite our best efforts to reach a sensible agreement, we, like many other platforms and broadcasters across Europe, have found the price expectations for the Discovery portfolio to be completely unrealistic.
"Sky has a strong track record of understanding the value of the content we acquire on behalf of our customers, and as a result we've taken the decision not to renew this contract on the terms offered[/highlight].
We will be binning the sky box as we watch the discovery channels mostly :( Bet BT are rubbing their hands ::)
-
I will certainly be voting with my feet if Discovery goes. It seems like wendyball and movies are all they are interested in. >:(
-
Surely sky will lose more money in customers going elsewhere , mind you isnt BT getting their discovery broadcasting rights from sky :-\ So all service providers will lose discovery :-\
-

And the movies are dire, so its becoming more and more just for Sport. Not that other pay TV providers are much better, including the streaming providers like the god awful Amazon Prime.
-

All major UK pay tv broadcasters make their own contracts with the content providers. And with multiple, viable pay tv providers sky as Sky, BT, Whorehouse, Evil Everywhere and VM, each vying for exclusive content deals, bidding goes up, so subscriptions have to go up, and you get less for it.
As I mostly am interested in films, I gave up (mostly - I do occasionally wobble and subscribe to some services) my Sky years ago, and put the £20pm (that's how long ago it was!) towards DVDs instead.
The streaming providers aren't much cop for films either, as most of the "new" stuff they are putting on now, I bought on DVD 6 months ago... ...we were flicking through Amazon Prime last night trying to find a film, and there new release featured film was Eye in the Sky, which we bought on DVD ages ago, so ended up watching listening to Hardcore Henry, a really shite, kinda pointless film that will just make you dizzy and ill.
-
All confirms my long standing decision not to be arsed with any subscription entertainment, just the license fee.
I don't give a rats arse about watching the latest movies ASAP, I'll wait till they are in the bargain bucket in Tesco.
Big Game sport ? I'll go to the pub, much more enjoyable
Besides, it's all non-essential. We can survive without 24/7 entertainment. Why would I pay to watch stuff when I can waste just as much time here on OOF ? ;)
-
I binned SKY a few years ago. Then under pressure from swmbo, took out a discounted package of channels / phone / broadband last year.
When the 12 months is up I'm binning them again for good. The TV channels are 99% crap and not worth a brass farthing as far as I'm concerned.
-
Discovery almost certain to go, our view is that we are bidding what it's worth. Discovery's ratings (on Sky) have been on a constant decline for the past decade. Sky made it's bid but Discovery, but they want more....
Discovery are playing hard ball, they threatening to pull the channels not us. If they do, they are basically throwing themselves under a train. Without Sky's viewing numbers, I don't think advertisers will be happy to pay the same fee's with a drastically reduced audience watching the channels.
Oh and you can't cancel if within contract, it's in the small print the channel line up may change. :)

That last sentence sounded very smug, you have certainly bought in to the sky ethos. Made my mind up.
-
Not smug, just stating fact as title of the thread is binning Sky, simple fact is you can't do anything really if within contract.
Been employed with them for over 7 years, being on the inside gives you a different perspective. :)
-
But will there be a price reduction on our package tunnie as im sure most will be a bit cheesed off at paying for something thats not there that we originally paid for :)
-

Simple answer, nope.
What Sky would have spent on the Discovery contract, will be spent on other content. There are about 100 shows now in production for Sky, there is a big drive to make our own content. It will go into funding our own similar type programs I'd imagine.
-
I'm not
...... never had it ..... never wanted it. I'm always astounded by how much some people pay each month ... and then some more for the pay-per-view stuff
-
Droped Sky about 2 months ago, and don't miss it one bit, far too expencive for what we got. 90% of programs were of no interest to me but to get the few that I did watch, I had to have the full package. Been with them for over 20 years and yet they still charged me £63 a month, total rip off in my opinion.

But you still chose to pay it for 20 years? :-\
-
Sky say the ratings are comparatively poor for Discovery, etc, but, if you don't subscribe to the sport or movies, which are extra money anyway (not remotely interested in either) what else is there that's likely to be attracting the ratings?
The Discovery channels are pretty much all I watch. The rest is a load of bilge reality TV, available elsewhere for free, or a lot less than £32 a month, anyway, and often without the advertising! :o
-
Arnt most of the discovery channel programs repeated on quest channel at some point? Just watch it on there!!!

Probably more a question of it starting out at £20-30 per month, which 20 years ago wouldn't have been unreasonable, leaving it running and suddenly realising that it's £120+ and thinking opps me, that's a months food shopping :-\
Incidentally, Quest is owned by Discovery ;)
Can see Discovery becoming a web based broadcaster... either via Netflix or separately. Either way, £10 a month wouldn't be unreasonable imho...
That said I tend to only watch six channels regularly, Quest, Dave, Film 4, More 4, Sony Movies and 5USA/Spike, and Netflix online, ironically using a Sky connection ::)
We don't have multiroom as the extra cost doesn't justify the time I would watch it for, although downloaded box sets would save having to buy them... which would mean entering the digital age... why buy imaginary things when you can own a physical copy :-X
-
Can see Discovery becoming a web based broadcaster...
Internet streamed broadcasting will soon become the only viable method for commercial broadcasters. Astra and Crown are cripplingly expensive...

Hence even Sky recently announcing a move to streaming only in 2018.

Something I recall saying about was the future some 10 years ago on here.
Satellite has had its day

There are still a lot of people with internet connections that won't hack it, mind..
We also need to break the dependency on having to take whatever shitty internet connection is offered by your chosen purveyor of TV too.

Which will be irrelevant given that the few wont be able to pay the Astra Sat costs.....

Could be heading for a baby boom, then, or we'll get much better at playing scrabble. ;)

Five channels plus freeview.
More than enough for me.

+1, Thats ok for me too. There is more than enough crap on Freeview too. Anyway, i begrudge paying GiffGaf £5 a month for my crappy old phone so Sky would be a definite nono.

Was'nt aware about this till just now, but read my emails before coming on OOF with an email from sky saying
"In order for us to continue to deliver a great experience for all our TV customers, we need to review our pricing from time to time. We’ve listed your price change below, and a reminder of how you can make the most of your Sky subscription.
What's Changing... TV
The price of your Variety bundle will increase on 1 March 2017 by £0.75 extra a month. This change will show in your March bill."
So not only am I loosing the main channel I actually watch but they are putting prices up as well. So whats the point doing a fixed price contract for 12 months if it does'nt really mean "Fixed price"
Methinks I will be voting with my feet as well (even though the Discovery channel isnt part of the Variety package listed above) >:(
-
You can't cancel right now though, Skrunts, because as
Rupert Tunnie will tell you, it's in the contract.
-
So I'm aware of the exact viewing percentage of Discovery, not sure I can say publicly, but it's shocking how low it is. It's really, really, really low! To the point of I can see exactly why we won't bid more.
I don't know if anyone noticed, but on NOW TV we lost Disney live channels some time ago. Huge "noise" at the time, reports in media of channels going, customers posting on forums saying they would leave. The result? Zip. Nothing. Had no impact! Which is a surprise.
It may have a minor effect, but I don't see any huge impact personally. (if the viewing figures are accurate)
-
??? How long before football bankrupts Sky ? they just can't keep paying more for it , how many viewers does Hull v Burnley bring in ? can't be enough to justify the massive outlay on Sky's part
-

Not being funny, but do you think they would pay more than they think they were worth? Course not, hence Champions League, we made a bid for that but BT out bid us by a huge amount. (it was a closed bid service)
Sky bid what it was worth to the business, same with football and same now with Discovery.
-
Crikey. last time I had Sky you needed a external VideoCrypt Box via the RGB Loop, how long ago was that. you probably wasnt even born then tunnie ;D
Even then I had a Card that used to cost me around £5 per 6 months to get the Codes re done :D some for Filmnet, but they were via a DMac Box from momery :-X
When all that went out the window, that was it, no more.
I cringe at what my Boys are paying just to see a Football being kicked about 24 hours a day. :o

Probably worth a careful read of the Ts and Cs, I am sure it will state that price increases may occur in line with inflation etc............what would be more interesting is if there is anything relating to changes in provided content as that is effectively an adjustment to the baseline package i.e. what you signed up to buy.
That could offer a door for contract exit......if that be your preferred route.

My understanding is there is a part of the terms which state the channel line up is subject to change, it can't be used as an exit clause.
We had the same when Disney live channels left NOW TV, although in that case we replaced them with other offerings.
-
I should just do what a lot of people do around here and get a dodgy openbox or something. But, as I'm a law abiding citizen............. ::)
-
There's a lot of room for improvement with sky rather than excuses, repeats are one of the big issues with people, they used to be looped every 4 hours and some channels it's now a 3 hour loop.
Other repeats are repeted on multiple channels to fill the content up.
Some channels need a +1 like BBC1
The list goes on . . . .and on.
People want value for money, only the new subscribers get the decent deals, sky needs to remember to look after the old customers properly. :-X
-
There's a lot of room for improvement with sky...
Indeed. Then there's the level of advertising that's up there with the freebie terrestrial channels, poor bit rate on everything but the premium channels, etc.
I think I've been subsidising the Wendyballists. :-\

My Sky subscription isn't quite that much. (edit) Yet!

Well just been on the dog and bone to Virgin and they will provide all the discovery channels all the sports..sky/bt and all the movies + 2 of their latest boxes for the same price as sky :P :P Just going to ring sky to cancel :D Oh and £50 credit :D

TiVo huh? Enjoy! :-X
Sounds like a good deal though, play them off against each other. But if you've altered or changed your Sky contract in last 12 months (eg add Movies or Sports), be warned that usually means they restart your contract :y
-
V6 boxes ;) Not changed anything on the contract tunnie :y
-
Still TiVo, which I hate with a Passion, was forced to use one at my old flat for 3 years. (no dishes allowed)
Appalling box and UI compared to Sky.
Good news on contract, puts you in driving seat. Make sure you go to second line loyalty team. First people you speak to can't do that much to your contract price.

That's another con. When we moved house, we 'renewed' our contract, but we couldn't cancel it. So we were forced to extend it.
-
Just to be clear about this, I know two people who have rung up and said they'd lost their jobs and were cancelling. Sky argued the toss, but both stopped the direct debit and, after getting a few shitty letters, heard no more.
I wouldn't like to chance it, but I'm basically talking about people who really couldn't care less.
Edit: And I guess you'd be stuffed in you wanted sky in the future.

Ha! that's the problem with Sky...
Quite a few years ago...I had Virgin....One year contract....after 6 months I decided I didn't want it....so told them I was moving....I researched where they did have cable...and told them my new address....and please can you come and fit it at my new address....reply I got was....sorry you are now in a area where we cannot supply...contract will be cancelled :y

It sent ondigital/itv digital down the shitter when they tried it.
Not only has it single handedly knackered pay tv, its also knackered the game of football, as there is too much cash swelling around in some clubs, which the vast majority of clubs cannot compete with.
-
I ditched sky on the day they announced they were winners of the last round of "guess the ridiculous number the Premier League wants to show their matches". It was very obvious that that kind of money wasn't going to come from sports subscribers, but from all their customers. As I tried to explain to the sky employee when she tried to tell me my package price wouldn't change.
Sure enough, the price increase letter dropped just before my last sky bill ::).
We have BT vision, because SWMBO likes some of the daft American channels that are on there. :y. Oh and I get some premiership (rugby) for free for another couple of months.
I have no problem with the way sky do business. They know better than any one customer what they can charge and what programmes/channels are worth to them. It's just in my case, this didn't align with my views on the subject.
-
The news reported on 12th April 2016
Sky profits up 12% to £1.1 billion just weeks after hiking prices for customers
Wonder what it will be this year.
Interestly Sky used to have thier profit/loss sheet online for the year (not seen it since)

Like all limited companies, their high level accounts are publically available.

Just watching the Australian Open tennis final, Nadal v Federer. A banner across the bottom has just said that, from February 1st, Eurosport will no longer be available on sky. I didn't realise Eurosport was part of discovery. I'm ringing up on Feb 1st and asking for a reduction in my monthly payment. I'm not averse to just cancelling the DD and taking my chances.

Think I might be doing the same meself...
Iv been a customer of Sky for over 20 years, and not once have they ever sent me anything for free....
I spend £96 a month with them, I used to spend around £130 a month with them... I cancelled the broadband and phone that was with them. They did their best to keep me, and the only time they ever offered me anything for free was when I rang up to cancel the BB and phone.... As I said to them, too little too late... I kept sending them emails/feedback when they asked me to, and in the emails etc...I always asked of there is anything they can do to stop me from going to VM for my BB and phone.... they did nothing... so I left...
Unfortunately, I think I will be cancelling my Sky package and going to VM for everything...
I have 3 Sky+ HD boxes, and am thinking of cancelling 2 of them, so in theory my bill will drop by 2/3's....
I only went with VM for my BB coz the Sky BB couldn't cope with the demand my boys put on the system when they are online...

I note that there is a Sky contract breach on the broadband Ts and Cs which means you can cancel the contract with them at the moment....should you wish to.

Apparently Discovery accepted the deal Sky proposed some time ago, so they blinked first. :)

I think minifreek has just displaced Lord Opti as OOF's wealthiest member! :o
a) to be able to afford to spend that sort of money on TV every month and b) to still have the time to watch the amount of TV that that sort of expenditure warrants! :)
Fair play to you minifreek and well done! :y

LOL.... no Lords live here fella...
I pay the fee coz Iv got 3 boxes - all HD and all SKY+... never get e reprieve from paying it, never been offered a reduction from Sky (no surprise there then) and it still goes up....
If the Discovery channels would have been taken from Sky, I would be asking for a reduction in payment - I won't get it, I know I won't get it... I keep getting offers from VM to move over to them for TV etc.. but sadly they don't have the FOX channel, so won't be able to watch The Walking Dead (wife and kids are big fans... I quite like it too... TBH, sadly theres no eye candy on the program for me, but there is for the missus)....
