Whats your pence per mile?
On the 2.2, my last tank worked out at 12.5p
A trusted source ::) tells me his is 17p, if thats the case it makes LPG'ing a V6 questionable, assuming 27mpg on petrol, thats around 21p a mile.
4p makes it hardly worth it :(

breaked if I can get anywhere near 27mpg in my 3.2.
Just checked the 3.2, ppm over last 2 tanks is 20ppm, approx 15mpg ::). Opps. And on those tyres :o
-
But then, I don't cruise up and down the M40 like Miss Daisy.
-
Last sensible figures I have for my 3.2 (since LPG, the petrol stats are rubbish, as only gets a slap and dash every 2 or 3 k) is 27ppm ;)
That was in March...

GID currently reading 26.9mpg, but that includes country road blast back from WIM.
Given my 90% motor miles, reckon I could get more :o

You wouldn't know the country routes back from WIM, so guessing A41>Aylesbury>Bicester>A43 or Great Missery>A413>Aylesbury?Winslow>Buckingham or combo thereof. Both economical stretches.
Had 32mpg on petrol over a 2k holiday in MV6 once.
But then you get 37k from tyres. I'm trying *very* hard to get 10k ;)
-
was: Great Missery>A413>Aylesbury>Winslow>Buckingham
Lots of over-taking, hardly economical!
Shall see how the first few tanks go :)
-
Well out of my first tank I got 320 ish miles from £60 worth of gas or 18.75 pence per mile. Same sums for petrol = 24 pence per mile

70L only costs me around £46 ish :-\

As the useless retards at Shell Leadenhall were closed this morning and this evening (but were open during day), I had to go to Towcester and be raped 75.9p. £47 for 65l :(

Better than BP.... but Asda are always stars of my LPG filling. 67p now :-*

Normally pay 75p pl and it works out at 20p per mile.Which Im a bit disappointed with tbh. Diesel / chip fat next time I think. ::)

Brakkers BP are 75.9p as well.
BUT
1) I ran out just south of Towcester
2) Already wasted 10,000 miles of Dunlops at Shell Leadenhall, couldn't face another 10,000 at those local inbreds at BP

My 60L tank took 59.8 litres from empty yesterday - according to the pump. ::)

Mines rotated to over fill a tad, I get 74L in a 90L.
59L in a 60L sounds dangerous :o

So use a different garage, as that one is conning you. Unless you haven't got your tank right.
Tank is too small. IME, the more you fill each time, the more economical it is. I reckon a set amount is lost with each fill.

Exactly. :(........MID usually reads around 23 mpg (for what thats worth) car is well serviced etc. I can only put it down to almost no motorway driving - almost all B roads,or LPG system needs a setup/sortout. :-\

I reckon on gas, MID overreads maybe 10%? My CID reads 21.9, measuring suggests just under 20mpg.

Good god, I clearly need some lessons in "How to drive like tunnie" - I get 21-22mpg around town, the best I ever had on a motorway run for a full tank @ 70mph was 28mpg, with the cruise on and no roadworks! I can't imagine how you get 27mpg on anything other than a steady run :-/

This was the new BP on the A12 opposite Colchester football ground. That one varies enormously for some reason.Sometimes it cuts off before I think it will, other times it does what it did yesterday.I find many of the pumps round these parts will put well over 50L in mine (according to the pump) the only exception is one near where I work, but Ive just had a week off and ran out on the way home from Chavtown on Sea yesterday.
I have considered a bigger tank,it would be nice, but too much aggro to get hold of one and fit it really.Maybe next summer,if I still have the car I will look into it a bit more seriously.

Only used a 1/4 of a tank, shall see over the course. I'm lucky though, its all dual carriage way/motorway from my flat to home. Its barley 1/2 mile off at each end before I'm at home or my flat.

But obviously very few have access to Asda, so that helps dragged your ppm down.
Maybe you should ask MPG on LPG, given the massive variation in LPG prices ;). The BP on the A5 at Paulerspury is 79.9 :o

Coming back from Wycombe last Saturday night (errr, early Sunday morning ::)), I came via Buckingham (45mins door to door ::)). A BMW Mini was pissing me off, booting it on every straight. I really can't be arsed working it out but the most I have had is 320 miles on a run
Thought I had a 70 litre tank till it took 72.9 the other week, guess it's an 80, only had it 3 years so obviously my gauge tells lies ;D

I havn't worked it out for a while, and my lpg gauge dosn't work ( :-[ ) so I fill up at every 300 miles or so...... ;)
Assuming at 300 miles, I put in 60 ltrs at 69p per litre that works out at 13.8 ppm.... Bit of a guess-timate really tho... ::)
-
I average approx 200 miles from 50 litres. 4 miles from a litre. A litre costs between 75p - 80p per litre here,so around 20p per mile.
I suppose miles per litre is the important part really as the price is so variable in different areas.
-
Simply put, the savings for most members have been between 8 and 10 p/L ;)
I fitted mine over 10k ago now so it's paid for itself :y :y

Better ppm though, that works out at 17ppm, and I was caning it ::)

I'm getting between 200 and 240 miles for 30 quid
90% of the time driving aroun town
Whatever that works out at :-\
Edit ........... 3 ltr / manual box :y
-
i put 58 litres @ 64ppl £37.12 at the weekend did 70ish miles on a and b roads and a 190 mile run to london @ 85 mph this morning 260 miles 14.27p per mile...going home i will fill at shell @71.9ppl but don't rush(60/70mph) so usually end up getting over 300 miles per tank

It's the most economical way to run a v6, that's it.
The fact diesel exists doesn't even come into it for me being honest. Although it would be nice to see 600odd miles range after fill up, even that doesn't compel me to own and live day to day with a tractor, apologies to diesel owners but the very thought just depresses me.
Although BMW's (spit) e39 straight 6 is refined enough, even that is like dragging finger nails down my "mechanical sympathy blackboard", if you see what I mean....? It just makes me cringe by comparison to petrol engines, v engines being the cream.... For me anyway.
If I/we where that bothered, and laid that much importance on economy, none of us would have an omega at all surely? There's more to it than that.
LPG mearly makes the car I want, and the way I want to drive it, more affordable. Simples!

Mine run about 320 miles per 64 litres LPG , it costs here 0.75 eurocent per 5 miles but much more worth when I manage to fill up in the neighbour Ukraine where it costs about 0.5 cent only.
-
I have managed to get 11 mpg ;D ;D :y :y :-[ :-[

I put in 45/46 ltrs from empty and get 200miles almost everytime, although I did manage 218miles once??
3.0ltr Auto and a heavy right foot, I'm not complaining ::) ;D ;D ;D
-
Yeah, I think as it cost me £75 to tank it & only got 320 miles odd it defo needs LPG'ing ;D
-
Must have been about quarter full then. Should cost approx. £100 from empty. ;).......which is a rather national disgrace. >:(

Needle not far off the red :)
-
Yeah, I think as it cost me £75 to tank it & only got 320 miles odd it defo needs LPG'ing ;D
So assuming petrol is 129.9, which is what I paid last night - you would have got about 57 litres for that money - so, 12.7 gallons.
Therefore, you've got 25.2 miles per gallon, which is 23.45p a mile.
On a V6 LPG, you can safely assume you'll get 15% less economy, so 21.42mpg on gas.
Basing gas on what I pay here, it's 76.9p per litre. On that basis, you're likely running cost on gas comes out at 16.33p per mile
Therefore, your saving, running on LPG, works out to be 7.12p per mile
You've said you do about 4k miles per year (from memory?) so therefore by running on LPG, you'll save £284 a year.
Also, based on the above savings per mile, if you buy an LPG kit at around £800, for argument sake, (which it easily will be by the time you've bought curry and beer ;D) your mileage to break even, will be 11,111 miles
Your kit will take over 2.7 years to pay for itself.
Is it really worth it?
On top of all that, if you're doing lots of short trips, you'll be initially running on petrol for that anyway, making the cost savings even less.
Hope this gives you some objective figures to consider / work with, in making your decision :y
-
Hi James,
Yup thats about the sums I was working save 5-8p ish per mile, when I was doing 450miles+ per week getting to work, its a no-brainer.
Now, I take a shuttle bus to work, does not cost anything. My miles now are mainly going back home, visiting friends / relatives.
Maybe max I'd do 2 trips back per month? I can't see myself getting more than 5k miles done in a year.
But, I kept my 2.2 for almost 7 years (infact we still have it) - I plan to keep this 3.2 a long time too, its got everything in a car I want, its fast, comfy, loads of space, Elite gadgets memory seats means anyone can jump in with ease.
So thinking long term, fact I can maintain 90% of things on it, LPG is worth while.
-
I totally agree mate, if you're keeping it that long - gas it :y
-
I find the calculations slightly flawed James.
When I got my estate I ran it for a short while on petrol and was getting about 320 miles (at most) to a tankfull, which cost (for ease of calculations) an average of £96. This isn't far off real world figures at the time. I make that 30p per mile.
On LPG, same journeys and driving style, I get 230 miles to £46 of LPG (consistently) on my normal driving, more on a long run (or if I let SWMBO drive ::)). That's 20p per mile. Saving (as previously stated and proven by Entwood's long running spreadsheet) 10p per mile.
Take into account the petrol used for starts and warm ups and it's safe to say that the saving is an average of 9p per mile ;)
At 5k/year it's still only 2 years to payback (including the increased service costs for more frequent plug changes) :y
Oh, and incidentally, if he fits a Cylinder tank in the boot I reckon it will come in well under £800 considering I didn't pay that much for my Estate kit with an (expensive) Toroidal tank ;) ;)
-

Fair enough LD.... was only really basing them on the petrol MPG Tunnie posted...
I do totally agree, if it's being kept that long, it's worth gassing.
I am not really up to speed on what people are doing anymore, so didn't realise this car was going to replace Mr T's 2.2 - thought it was a project :-[
-
I have managed to get 11 mpg ;D ;D :y :y :-[ :-[
I have done £10 of petrol in 15 miles before, back when petrol was £5 a gallon. Its actually quite hard work to manage that sort of MPG over 15 miles without towing a roadblock.

I know tunnie is currently paying 129.7p for petrol and 67.7p for LPG.
If contemplating gassing, do so now. Start getting benefits now, rather than in 2 years time.
However, I know he likes his boot as well... ...and with that stupid Bose shelf as well, space becomes tight.....

Given I will keep it, I want to LPG soon as. Need to sort noisy tappets first :(
Also depends on when the LPG master is available :)

Whilst all your calculations are interesting there is another way of saving even more money, buy one that is already converted!
My Elite had a sequential kit already on it and cost me £1700 4 years ago( should still scrape in £900) and has had 40k put on it since without major issue so I guess by JamesV6CDX calcs I have saved around £2480 in fuel :o :o 8)

I'd be interested in coming down to take the p1ss / lend a hand, if you do it :y

As I said, as soon as I know what the situation is WRT me getting a full time employee to help out and give me time off I'll let you know :y That said, I'm sure you could manage it with the other volunteers even if you get it all fitted and then take a trip up to mine/part way for a calibration run, which I could easily meet you somewhere like Chelmsford (or possibly closer to London) and still be working/on call ;) :y Although you'd have to accept that I may get dragged away at any point ;)

Much like petrol really - I was amazed people in this thread are filling up at 129.9! I haven't seen that price for six months or more; it's 134.9-135.9 where I live :-/
Although as a percentage of price, LPG does seem to swing around much more..

Yep. It's also much slower to change price than petrol... Frequently LPG has still been going up when petrol goes down and vice versa. I believe it's because LPG pricing follows North Sea Gas prices while petrol follows Crude oil prices :-\

Think the tank (will go 80L this time, its a better fit), filler and pipe work to front should not be too bad. Should be able to get that sorted.
Already got the hole in the bumper, so job saved there. :D
I'll keep an eye out for more 3.2 breakers to get another injection manifold, sweet talk Kevin & donate to his favourite beer charity for a spot of drilling & tapping of LPG injectors, so should have most of it ready to go before we need the expert :y

Tesco in Bletchley were 128.9p for unleaded, unusually beating Asda's 129.7p
Force of habit looking at petrol prices - haven't filled up for months ;D

I dream of your cheap petrol, TB.. ;D
