Title: Fitting xenon headlights upgrade.
Post by: smokingomega on 15 February 2012, 01:17:00
Hi all
Just bought a pair of xenon headlights complete with ballasts. I really should have asked the question before I bought them, but, will they be easy to fit to my 97 omega cdx?
I know about the need of self levelling suspension, which I have and I know that washers are needed, which I intend to do.
The thing I need to know really is, firstly is it possable and if so the wiring ect.
Thanks for any advice

You dont need washers or self levelling to have HID's , been a lot of discussion on many forums about this recently as the new MOT regs are coming in. Self levelling headlights (not suspension) and headlight washers must work if fitted. If fitted being the key point.

Dont expect a whole heap of improvement if you are fitting HIDs, I had a mini facelift CDX with halogens, now I have a Facelift with HIDs. Both were useless. IMHO its the only weak point the Omega has.

I've got the projector style ones at moment but thought I'd buy the xenons. Just need to know about wiring and if it is possible to fit the adjusters I currently have in the projector ones

Thanks. Is it the same principle for the genuine vauxhall xenons?
They are genuine ones I have bought

Yep, but you will need the ballast plugs from the donor

You fit your existing levelling motors into the HID`s to maintain dash adjustment, plug & play

Bonnet isnt a problem.Needs the litle nib trimming off the lower part of the lense nearest to the grill, and a little trimming in the same area of the under headlamp trim. :y

There are some wiring changes needed also. If possible go back to the Elite and hack off a few inches of the wiring loom that connected to the headlights you got.

The reason is that the dipped beams only are Xenon and instead of being powered via the multi-connector, there is a separate one for the ballast supply (with its own earth also). You simply make a parallel connection from the yellow/brown (dipped supply) and brown (earth) to the ballast supply which has its own separate 2 pin connector. IIRC.

It is ESSENTIAL that these connections are done properly. The Xenon ballasts fire up taking an inrush current of over 18 amps - which then gradually reduces to about 3.5 amps over a couple of minutes after the lights have warmed up. As the current is high the connections need to be done properly - if you use Scotchbloks  :o then don't be surprised if they melt at some time in the future!

Doing it this way also means that you can swap back to the normal projectors just by plugging in. As has been said then the adjuster motors simply swap over from your current headlights.

Hope that all makes sense - Rob

That makes complete sense.
The thing bothering me more thn anything was weather the adjusters were the same fitment.

Given the slight improvement, and the likely runnings with the law (DfT are actively trying to ban HID retrofits done badly - ie, no levelling or washing), I'd just get decent bulbs for your projectors.

Ignore the MOT BS - having an MOT doesn't make a car road legal ;)
