Omega General Help / Re: facelift 3.0 v6 brake upgrade help
« on: 30 March 2009, 18:18:19 »
Agree the standard setup is v good if healthy. I recently fitted bog standard Vaux trade cub pads on the front and Lockheed rears and bled the brakes again with Dot 5.1 (only needed to do this because a bleed valve leaked while the wishbones were being done) and my brakes now feel like they'd stop a train. Mind you, my only regular comparison is the Monza and its brakes have always felt wooden no matter what I do to them, whereas I find most Monzas have a pretty good pedal.

I heard once that master cylinders and servos should ideally be matched and I once replaced the master cylinder only on the Monza whilst trying to diagnose a problem. Buggered if I'm going through the whole process again and changing it back though!

Omega General Help / Re: Secondary air injection pump

Must get round to removing my pump. Discovered the one-way valve had failed when I did the cambelt so unplugged the unit and blocked the rubber sections on the pipes from the manifolds with, er, well you don't want to know! Wondered what could have caused the hose to split and it was all the hot air being blown back! I guess this sytem has a marginal benefit when it works and the car is new but these days it's just in the way!

Get a metal band type filter wrench and tighten it around the housing, grips it nicely while you undo the lid. Inside there's a 27 mil socket holding the housing to the block, you'll probably need to tighten that up before putting the new filter in.

Ah, but there is a credit card size holder supplied with the stereo. Guess lots of them have gone astray inthe last 10 years.

I love the phone in the Omega, proper top of the range 90s technology! I've got an O2 sim in mine. Don't get to use it much because my work-issue mobile bluetooths to my work-issue satnav. It's just one of those things that's nice to have, like the Trafficmaster lady!

What wheels do you have Alex? I buckled both n/s Irmscher 17s on a craftily hidden pothole. Got out at the roadside and had a look up the inside of the wheel and there was a massive bend in it, looked perfect on the outside.

It costs £30 for a year's subscription, which my work kindly paid for. It's got me out of a few jams, eg I'm at Heathrow and need to get back to Kent so could go either way - TM tells me there's stationary traffic for 10 miles at the Dartford crossing so I'd go via the Surrey stretch. Sometimes there's nowt you can do but at least you know how long a wait you're in for and can call someone to say how late you're going to be. Mind you I live near the Dartford crossing so mine never shuts up!

You can also remove the SAI pump assembly from the n/s front behind the bumper, and the pipework with one-way valve (that usually becomes 2-way at some point) from under the bonnet. Saves weight and gives you a bit more room in the engine bay.

Omega General Help / Re: X30XEV Overheating
« on: 13 October 2009, 17:08:43 »
That was my first instinct as well, water pump. Can you see coolant running through the return pipe back into the expansion bottle? Could probably test in a messy but effective way by turning the engine over with a water hose disconnected, you'll soon see it it's pumping!

This reminds me of an overheating problem I had with the Monza when the heater matrix was bypassed. In the end a flush with 2-stage aggressive chemical stuff sorted it out but by that time I had also found a replacement heater matrix and plumbed it in under the bonnet as a temporary measure. If something that should be in the system isn't then it might be slowing the circulation. You have a heater but not a bypass valve - I spose it's possible the heater matrix is blocked up, are you getting heat in the cabin?

What about the cooling fans, are they cutting in?

Omega General Help / Re: What's the 'correct' V6 engine temp?

Many Omega owners would kill to have an engine running on the cool side! I'd be perfectly happy with those temps.

Totally worth it! Join the Autobahnstormers (other clubs are available but I edit the Autobahnstormers magazine so I'm hardly gonna suggest alternatives) and your £20 annual membership fee entitles you to Trade Club membership. You'll save the cost of joining on your first service. Particularly good deals on TC include front discs and pads for £75 and 4 5-litre cans of semi-synth oil for the price of 3. The extent of the discount varies according to what parts you're buying but on the majority of stuff the saving is substantial.

Omega General Help / Re: Replacing brake discs
« on: 13 October 2009, 13:01:42 »
Vauxhall do a trade club deal with front discs and pads for about £75 as opposed to discs only for just over £100. The only difference is that the Trade Club pads are a bit more dusty and some say they don't quite have the feel of the more expensive ones. I've always found them to be fine. Just did my front discs and hubs at the weekend.

Omega General Help / Re: Tracking DIY
« on: 11 October 2009, 16:15:29 »
Martin, what setting did you use for the camber? Just done my front discs and bearings and my 20,000 mile Dunlops are perfect except for the innermost 10 mil which is goosed! The tracking will need doing but I also want them to give me less negative camber than the spec figure.
