Omega General Help / v6 back breather box - large pipe
« on: 16 June 2015, 20:16:02 »
i have checked all the breather pipes except one - the large pipe on the back breather box.  i checked the small hole on it - it is fine. the black plastic breather bridge was fine with all ports clear.  the large pipe on the breather box seems a pig to get at without dismantling stuff, which is why i haven't done it.  given everything else was fine can i assume that one will be ok too?

General Discussion Area / 3tb, 4tb, 6tb even 8tb hard drives
« on: 14 June 2015, 17:46:24 »
as i'm waiting on a hdtv tuner card my mind is turning to a hard disk upgrade.

i currently run 2 x 2tb drives.  last time i tried a 3tb, nearly 4 years ago now,  i couldn't get it to work due to the 2.1tb limit .

my pc is windows 7 64bit and dates from 2008, bios is phoenix award 1.0.18 24/2/2009.

have they sorted out the issues with older pcs and drives bigger than 2.1tb now?

seagate seem to offer a tool that will partition the new drive into 2gb partitions, not ideal I already run 5 drives but i could live with that.

any oof preference for oil filters apart from the predictable vx (who makes vx ones anyway?).  i've used a guttman for the last two oil changes they look ok (made in india with a german sounding name) but the vx kept the oil looking cleaner for longer.  crosland currently £1.64 at eurosales or £3.24 for the paper insert

<edit> just discovered euros car parts bought the name crosland and stick on the cheapest filters they can get >:(

Omega General Help / tyre rim leak
« on: 27 April 2015, 23:56:18 »
i have an annoying leak of about 1 to 2psi a week from my front tyre.  on removing it and checking with water there is a short line of bubbles from one part of the rim.  so do i have to take it to the tyre fitters and get it re-seated or can i deflate it, prise the bead open and shove some kind of sealant in the gap?  maybe slime type stuff?

i estimate the fronts have only about 8k -10K miles left on them so i may just live with it i can't see it failing catastrophically  ???

had occasion to press this on sunday - came across a stationary car in motorway slow lane when everyone else was far from stationary, or slow.

it dialled 112 not 999 maybe i had set that for going to europe but i dont remember.  is it programmable to 999 or 112?  supposedly they are the same but 112 broke up and i manually dialled 999 instead.  the motorway signs came up 'incident- slow down' pretty quickly.

while i'm at it is there a way to prevent accidental presses?  it is a good safety thing as it is but i confess to making more accidental calls than real ones.  they don't seem to mind, yet....

General Discussion Area / electric conducting lube?
« on: 20 November 2014, 18:36:47 »
my tv remote keeps playing up, i strip it and clean the contacts with meths and it works fine again for a few days then some buttons start failing again.  is there some lube i can put on the contacts that will make them conduct better? i might try some light olive oil but am worried it may make it worse.  the contacts are rubbery carbon like material.  graphite grease perhaps?  musnt be sticky enough to hold the buttons down.

Omega General Help / parts cross reference autopartoo
« on: 06 November 2014, 02:50:55 »
came across this useful site which lets you put in any part number and it then lists all (or a lot of) the manufacturers own cross reference part numbers.

www.autopartoo.com

some are listed 'Direct Cross Interchange' and some 'Indirect Cross Interchange' which puzzled me for a bit.  It is explained here http://www.baldwinfilter.com/ProductHighlights042011.html

Omega General Help / ditching self levelling suspension
« on: 04 November 2014, 17:00:09 »
i have a broken rear spring - went with a loud bang while stationary and is snapped in the middle.  still drives ok except for speed bumps.  shock on the other side rear is knackered too.  vaux want £800 to replace both rear shocks and springs that is so ridiculous i didn't even check if they were self levelling ones.  kwikfit don't do self levelling shocks or springs and wanted £180 to replace the lot with standard.  however they thought it might not be possible to convert.  reckon i can do it myself for £70 and that includes buying a spring compressor.  it doesn't seem possible to easily obtain the self levelling parts, at least not at sensible prices.

question is has anyone converted from self levelling to standard?  i understand i need to do both the springs and shocks (thanks chrisgixer) and both sides and tie up the airline but anything else? pull the fuse on the pump? can it be done?

car also has removable tow bar this seems to be a complication for choice of springs too.

thanks

General Car Chat / rear spring choice
« on: 03 November 2014, 01:38:50 »
there seem to be 13 different part numbers for omega rear springs and 2 for mine -  fl 2.6 V6 saloon not armoured not police with removable tow bar and self levelling.

90295666 (7x) is for self levelling and  90295666  (10x) for use with removable tow bar.  any idea which is correct for my car? what does the 7X and 10X mean?

some sellers are saying one spring fits all omegas which seems plausible, are the different vx part nos for a 'spring kit' perhaps including the bits that dont break and I dont need?

other sellers offer a right and left version, seems very unlikely.

thanks

just noticed eurocarparts say theirs are only for cars without ride height adjustment, whys that? theyre not cheap either £62 a pair.

Omega General Help / painting brake discs
« on: 04 September 2014, 02:12:41 »
ive got 2 new front discs to fit.  dont want them to rust like the insides of the old ones so im thinking of spray painting them with hycote very temp paint.

question is do I spray the whole disk or am i supposed to mask off the contact area?  masking will be a chore plus i suspect it is the areas just on the edge of the contact zone that start the rust so they need the paint most.  the v high temp paint is not oil based so should just scrape off the contact area in first use and not contaminate the pads shouldn't it? assuming i spray it lightly?

i see the few pre painted discs like the black high gloss mtecs come painted all over

doubtless that is some fancy special coating.

if the advice is absolutely not to spray the contact area i suppose  i could spray it and then remove it with some temporary fine sandpaper between the pads and disc for a few spins.

Omega General Help / rear brake discs
« on: 18 June 2014, 17:37:44 »
do these rust on the inside like the front ones do?  i plan to replace the pads just wondered if i need to order new discs as well. im loath to do that as i suspect oe disks rust less than new ones.   i can't see the inside face.
