Omega General Help / Brade Pad warning
« on: 02 July 2008, 16:02:42 »
I am getting a dash warning for 'Brake Pad'. Is there any way of telling if it's front or back without physical inspection?  :-/

Omega General Help / Re: Auxilliary belt tensioner
« on: 17 January 2008, 13:42:56 »
Just a big thankyou to all who replied and gave me the confidence to have a go. The job was exactly as described and I got away with just the pulley wheel. This is a great site with some very helpful people - thanks again.

Steve

PS I am posting some info re a poss source of cheap parts on the chat section - found out by chance whilst phoning around Vauxhall dealers this morning...

Cheers for the replies! The link is very useful as you say (strange - I searched 'tensioner' and 'auxiliary belt' before I posted but got zero back? Prob me getting the search wrong!).

I can't get my head around what I'll need to buy, given the metal wheel has siezed so assumedly something behind the metal wheel (bearings) has siezed and will need replacing?

Also I couldn't understand the bit about fitting and tensioning the aux belt once pulley is sorted - I'd guessed I would have to loosen off the alternator but it sounds like the tensioner wheel itself somehow moves?

Sorry if I'm being thick...

Omega General Help / Auxilliary belt tensioner

The pulley wheel (which is top left as the engine is viewed from the front) which is described in one of the useful pics elswhere as the aux belt tensioner has siezed up and the wheel itself has been ripped from its mounting. To be fair, it had been making grinding noises and I'd ignored them!

The wheel seems to be held on by a single nut - is this is an easy enough job for me to do? What exactly will I see when I remove the nut and any ideas on costs of replacement?

Thanks for any advice

Omega General Help / horrible grating noise
« on: 09 December 2007, 10:43:52 »
Hi all. I started the car (2.5 V6 manual 99 model) this morning and there is a nasty grating noise coming from the front end. Not very loud but enough to be worrying. I think from one of the pulley wheels (?) driven by the belt that drives the water pump / alternator etc., but not certain about that.  The noise quietens at times but is still there on tickover. I'd say it was a typical loose fan belt noise but it's more grating and not there just on acceleration. It also doesn't sound anything like a squeaky water pump noise that I've heard on other cars.

Any ideas anybody?

Omega General Help / Re: EGR PIPE PROBLEMS
« on: 04 November 2007, 17:36:36 »
Hi - this sounds like the problem I had a few months back. I can't recognise your description of the pipe that is blowing, but if it's about 3" long it could be the breather that allows hot gasses to escape into the exhaust. If either side of the exhaust is blocked, the hot gasses back up and the pipe is the weakest point. If it IS that pipe, you should have one either side of the engine towards the front. Suggest you search 'exploding pipes' for more info. The only solution seems to be to check your exhaust for a blockage - I had a middle section and cat fitted and it sorted it straight away.

Good luck.

Just an update - I decided to try again so removed the plenum to find that one of the rubber seals between the plenum and the next bit of the inlet where the injectors are mounted had been mashed up when I put everything back together. Replaced this and Bob is now my uncle! Obviously a major air leak.

Thanks again for all the offers of help - we will still have to arrange something for the North West!!

Thanks all for the support. Question for Andy (at Kitt Green) - Pete at Northwich is happy for you to have a look at my car if you are available - he's snowed under and also a bit of a drive away. If you fancy a go, I'd be grateful. I'm praying you will hear it run and say - "Aha! That's the ......" The sooner you could get here (Wigan town centre) the better.

Let me know?

Matt, you asked how I've cocked it up? Probably simplest if I refer to you to my pathetic catalogue of errors under the title 'Cost of cambelt cover change' (or very similar)....I followed the instructions to change my cam cover gaskets, and now it runs like a dog. I suspect I've either connected a pipe the wrong way around, or pulled too hard on the plug leads and loosened something at the DIS pack, or not plugged the injector rail connector back in hard enough, or, or, or etc.

Pete - I would be very grateful if you were available. I think I can manage til end of week using train to work. Obvioulsy you can't estimate cost without seeing it but I'd appreciate anything you can do. Funnily enough, my brother lives in Winsford and my Dad lives on Castle Hill at Northwich.

I'll try and be available whenever you can make it - am I OK to put my phone number on here? (I'm not bothered myself but I know some sites suggest you don't?)

Omega General Help / Any (paid) help available in Wigan Lancs area?
« on: 28 October 2007, 10:51:34 »
Plod's post just got me thinking. I've been posting recently about my failed attempt at cam cover gasket changing. The car is now running (just) but sounds very sick. Rather than asking a garage for help, I'd fbe much happier paying an 'expert' to look at it - it may be fairly obvious to one of the forum members.

So if anyone would consider having a look for a reasonable cost, I'd be very grateful. My only other option is to strip it all down again and hope I find something obvious.

I don't know if this useful, but the SAI valve (black circular thing at RH front of engine) is making a grinding noise and if you touch it you can feel it 'vibrating'?

Any advice appreciated. Otherwise I'll have to get it towed to a garage and eat humble pie....

Hi Pete - please excuse my ignorance here...if you mean the spark plugleads then no, I just took them off the plugs. I think the DIS pack is at the engine rear (?) and I followed the guide to get to the cam covers, so I think this was unplugged from the injector rail?? As far as I know all the electrical plugs are back where they started.

I've managed to get a very rough tickover going, but I can't trace any loose pipes. The exhaust is smoking VERY badly now, and there is a loud POP bang noise coming from the passenger side every few seconds. I can't trace the noise other then it's on the passenegr side. Also there now appears to be smoke buildup at the same place.
