General Car Chat / Re: high octane fuel
« on: 14 March 2016, 16:41:22 »

Piss off.

I speak as I find and have tried V power in the following cars...

'95 N 1.4 Peugeot 106
'51 3.2 Omega manual
'55 1.9 Vectra 150 cdti
'07 1.9 Seat Altea XL tdi
'54 3.2 Omega manual
'00 2.0 Omega manual
'55 1.8 Vectra C saloon
'55 1.8 Vectra C hatch
'58 1.8 Vectra C hatch
'03 3.2 Omega manual
'63 2.0 Insignia 130cdti
'03 2.2 Omega auto
'11 2.2 Merc E class Blue efficiency diesel auto
'61 2.0 Insignia 160 cdti 4x4
'03 3.2 Omega auto

If that isn't a wide enough test pool, then I don't know what is... on every single car, the net result was zero, ie the extra cost was balanced by a slight increase in mpg, resulting in the same pence per mile.

i don't know why you're getting so worked up about this.  anyone can post a long list of cars they have driven but the proper test is quite easy to do especially if you drive to work on a motorway that isn't too busy (as i used to do):

* choose a set distance eg between 2 or three junctions
* make sure your tank is fully either unleaded or super unleaded
* set cruise control
* reset fully your average mpg on the display
* drive the distance at the cruise speed and write down the final mpg figure.

tested half a dozen times i was getting about 10% more mpg with super on the 2.5 V6, that's my experience.

hopefully oof is about people sharing their experiences not about keyboard warriors telling people to piss off

Agreed :y

Methinks someone has not been taking their meds!  ;D ;D

Omega General Help / Re: Red antifreeze
« on: 14 March 2016, 16:25:38 »
I have both GM Longlife Red antifreeze and GM Dexcool antifreeze in my garage (5 lits of each).

The GM red longlife antifreeze contains Ethanediol (basically ethylene alcohol), whereas the GM Dexcool (which is more orange than the standard red longlife) is based on 2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA) and other organic acids and indeed is an OAT (Organic Acid Technology) antifreeze.

Read the tales of woe, and litigation, on the net, re the use of Dexcool in older (more than 10 years old) GM engines.  As I said for an Omega use the standard GM Longlife Red, not an OAT antifreeze!

HTH and clarifies.

OAT is recommended by Jaguar for my XJ, and in the handbook it states OAT should not be mixed with non-OAT antifreezes.

GM, and other car manufacturers, don't make antifreezes, just supply "a n others" antifreeze to a specification with their own label applied.

OAT is coloured orange by the way, not red ;)

from the astra owners manual 2012 (and others)

"Coolant and antifreeze
Use only organic acid type-long life
coolant (LLC) antifreeze approved for
the vehicle."

isn't that GM red or are they recommending some new GM colour, or a non GM coolant?
OAT antifreeze is NOT gm red.  OAT is for engines more modern than the Omega V6.  Yep its recommended for the more modern 2012 Astra, not for a 2003 or earlier Omega V6.

Try googling it re mixing oat with other antifreezes  - it will answer your query and confirm my posts ::)

Omega doesn't require OAT antifreeze - specified for more modern engines.  Just stick with the red GM antifreeze as specified.
i though the GM red was OAT.  isn't it?

No its not ;)

General Discussion Area / Re: £ 800 car tax
« on: 13 March 2016, 23:56:40 »
Dbug, assuming this is the XJ in your profile, I'd consider £500 p.a. to be good value.

If nothing else for the amount of Her Majesty's Highway it takes up at any one time  ;)

It is and not disagreeing  ;D ;D ;D :y  And as the good Doc Opti says, if I put suspension in sports mode and use the paddle gear change, a semi usually results, and the £10 tax per week pales into insignificance compared to petrol costs  :y ;D ;D

Mine costs £500 pa to tax - I don't view that as a particular issue, if I did I would have bought an older car with all the inevitable increased maintenance costs ;)

Omega doesn't require OAT antifreeze - specified for more modern engines.  Just stick with the red GM antifreeze as specified.

It is NOT recommended to mix older antifreezes with OAT, particularly the old glycol based products as a gel will be produced!

Omega General Help / Update - pattern cam cover gaskets
« on: 13 March 2016, 22:55:50 »
As you know I fitted pattern gaskets to one bank and GM to other on the '03 2.6V6 Estate as a comparison -

At last cam covers done today.  Gaskets and o-rings were brittle, with 5 of the 6 plug wells full of oil - suprised car was running ok with no misfires!!

Drivers bank fitted with Payen gasket set from allgermanparts and gm o-rings, and passenger bank fitted with a gm gasket set and gm o-rings.  As stated before

the Payen set feels as supple and pliable as the gm set, and the fit to the cam cover was same for both types.

Time will tell!! - will update Payen performance vs gm as mileage increases ;)

Plug wells cleaned out, coil packs cleaned up, and new plugs fitted - still got a smoke screen when started up, but cleared reasonably quickly.

Update - the AGP ones that cost around a fiver have been on the "drivers bank" now for around 16K miles - fitted together with a new set of GM

gaskets (which I had "in stock" and cost me £25 when I bought them) on the "passenger bank".  No leakage to date from either bank - in fact just serviced the

car so checked carefully - and in 16K miles only needed to top up engine oil once (after 15K) with around 1/4 pint!  Engine and drive both dry.

Both gaskets fitted using new GM o-rings and black sealant - niether bank was torqued, just tightened from middle out in stages by feel (experience).  All bolts

checked during recent service for continued tightness & all ok.

HTH

Car has now done approx 25K miles since gasket & o-ring change - no leakage from either bank and all plug wells clean.  No oil added since last oil change 8K milews ago.  Cam cover bolts checked for tightness - none loosened.  25K to date for a £5 gasket, and still going strong.  Seems cost effective to date vs the pricey GM ones.  Will continue to monitor whilst still owned.

Mileage now on 127K miles.

Thinking of selling soon, no mechanical issues, bodywork rust free but scruffy - for an '03 CD Estate, not £3K, nor £2K, more realistically nearer sub £1K - reason for sale will be due to purchase of a newer similar sized Estate.  Will put in "For Sale" section when replacement located and purchased.

Omega General Help / Re: Heater hose Clips
« on: 08 March 2016, 23:33:45 »
Jubilee clips have been successfully used for years on car cooling systems, and provided decent quality ones are used should not present any issues.
The switch to the spring clip types was originally dictated by cost - its quicker and therefore cheaper during assembly, to slip one of these on than fit and tighten a jubilee clip, and it does not need further checking for tightness prior to suppling to customer.

No need to disconnect battery - as said, as long as you don't turn ignition on ;)
