two locating pegs one could still be in the head whilst the other is in the block.

I would be giving the engine a little bit more of a clean being honest Scott :y

That picture is before I cleaned it up Daz if that is what you are going off? Even I know that it needs to be cleaner than that :P :P :P

I am pretty sure that there is only one peg in each side though (I will check again tomorrow). Can they be bought from stealers? :y

New to this so not teaching me to suck eggs at all - all advice much appreciated.

When I took the cams off I put the pulleys back on them so i knew where each one went!

Thanks again :y

Just sealent on the breather box...

With ref to engine position - the crank sprocket mark needs to be at 4pm. you wil note on each side that 1 piston will be a fair way down, and the 2 adjacent to it will be level to each other near the top, but far away enough for valve clearance  :y

Bolt heads on with engine in this position - fit cams - align cams correctly - then turn engine to TDC to fit the belt  :y

Thanks James. Thats exactly what I have!

So once bolted on I align cams with the markings on the rear cam cover and then lock them, turn crank to TDC and then fit the belt?

Omega General Help / Cylinder Head refitting
« on: 28 February 2010, 16:00:52 »
Everything is now cleaned up and I am ready to refit the heads back on the car. Couple of questions before I do though

I have taken the breather box off to clean - does it need a gasket when refitting or is it just sealant? If sealant which one - will the grey oil cooler sealant suffice?

Should there be 1 or 2 of the locator pegs on each head? I only seem to have one on each and I wondered if perhaps someone had been there before me and not done a proper job?

Also I wasn't sure whether I had the engine at 60 degrees before TDC when I took it apart (i thought it might have been 180 degrees out). Can anyone tell from this photo (please note this is the engine before I cleaned it up - it is clean now). Cylinders 1,3,4 and 6 are all near the top and cylinders 2 and 5 are near the bottom.

Correct me if I am wrong but the proper stuff from Vauxhall is £8 a tube (just checked my invoice). Good quality sealant in B&Q is about £8 a tube (not sure how that is half the price). I fail to see how anything is better than the stuff the manufacturer uses without any problems :-X

Believe this is a common thing nowadays. They will try to tell you that green sealant replaced the black. However black still available and should be used instead of green.

For info part number for black is 90485251 :y

I think they are about £8 plus the dreaded from a dealer so not to bad. IIRC on the early V6 the manifold to down pipe is held together by bolts and not studs with nuts so lots of plusgas from above. Driverside isn't too bad to do passenger side is a nightmare :(

Didn't realise they were that cheap from the stealer :y

I got them from a member on here. I did them myself but I had the heads off the car to do the head gasket so was very easy.

Plenty of plus gas on the nuts and studs will help you not to snap them :y

Manifolds or gaskets? £6 very cheap for manifolds!!

I believe it is Vx only recommended and only the multilayer metal gaskets. This is what I have just used on mine.

I may be wrong though. ::)

HG gone on mine. I had no water in the oil to speak of apart from a little more mayo than normal on the filler cap.

I had misfire and loads of steam/smoke out the exhaust. Surefire way to tell is to compression test each cylinder, should be about 15 Bar per cylinder although you are looking more for one cylinder to be a lot different to the others. On mine I had 5 cylinders reading 15 Bar and one reading 19 Bar. :y

DIS pack? Sometimes water collects in the sponge under the scuttle directly above the DIS pack and then drips onto it. Could be this? :-/

EDIT: Must type faster! ;D

Omega General Help / Rusty bores
« on: 15 February 2010, 11:05:45 »
Just had a proper look at the engine in the car before attempting to put the heads back on and there is some light surface rust in the bores :( :(

Will this be a major problem? Should I rub it off with some fine emery paper or just leave it?

I guess after 2 months of ownership I SHOULD know the answer to this but:

On a facelift temp settings...what is AUTO or ECO suggesting.

I drive happliy along with neither activated and just change the temperature with the dials and even then..extremely rarely.

Sometimes when I press.. say demist..the AUTO comes on for quite a while and I seem to be constantly pressing buttons to turn Auto back off again...so in a nutshell........
What is AUTO/ECO and what do they do/control exactly.

When all else fails ........ Please read the manual  :y  :y
