General Car Chat / Re: So what have you done to your car today?
« on: 06 July 2011, 09:02:52 »
I spent 45 mins in the rain last night trying to release the oil filter housing on my estate.

Any guesses who was the last person to tighten it up???  ::)

And despite what my elder sibling may say
We all know if you cut him in half, there would be a Vauxhall badge through him, like a stick of rock ;)

It would probably be fun to have one as a hobby, something to keep yourself out of mischief on the days off work etc. And would probably be fun to drive on sunny Sunday afternoons etc.
To have one as everyday transport that you depend on to get to work everyday etc. would be a living nightmare imo. :y

Completely agree...... my spitfire was bought as a daily driver but it was soon realised it wasn't practical or dry.....

I find this discussion very entertaining as an owner of a BL 1500 Spitfire.  I'm under no illusions, the thing rusts away in front of your eyes and has loads of weird quirks.  It's 33 years old so is probably better built now than when it left the factory.  But for me, this is the fascination - all of the cars mentioned here are cult cars (allegros, marinas, SD-1's etc) and the fact that they are so badly designed, awful to look at and dreadfully put together makes them interesting.  A big part of our motoring heritage.

Driving a reliable, well built and designed car is boring.

And despite what my elder sibling may say, I'd love to have an SD-1 on my drive for this very reason.... :y

Can't. Never took any photos of it, never kept any documentation. To be honest I was glad to see the back of it

Perhaps better he doesn't know then  ;D

Blimey, not 100% certain but I think I owned that car briefly many years ago.

Nice cruiser but it wasn't a good car to us.

I can't believe there are only 6 left.

If you can verify that you owned it please let me know - my mate would be very keen to hear about it!  He bought it from a guy in Middlesbrough?

I stand corrected - straight six it is!  Seems I am unable to write the V6 without a V in front these days!

A good friend of mine recently bought one of the 6 remaining Viceroy V6's.  Amazingly its was in great condition except for the front wings and the lacquer deliminating.  Over the past few weeks he has been putting this right and is posting his progress on Total carlton for those interested:

He also has a mint, unrestored mk1 Carlton 2.2 CD and a 2.6 Diplomat which he has rebuilt.

I find this strange - I personally really like these and will be looking for one when I'm done with my estate.  They're a bit quirky but like the Omega you get a hell of a lot for the money.

My 2.6 auto estate is a thirsty beast - only just over 30mpg on a motorway run and low 20's mpg around town.

my old 2.5 manual saloon used to give me figures similar to Mark's until near the end when we suspected the cat's were colapsing

General Car Chat / Re: A Tyre to avoid

I go for good tyres. I prefer tarmac to ditches. Sadly, you do get what you pay for, although some premium tyres I would not ever use (again).

I have a large, powerful 200+ bhp car weighing 1.7T.  I have a moral responsibility to keep it on the black stuff, and out of other people's boots.

I could own a 1.0l shitbox Corsa, in which case, I would use a cheaper tyre, as I would drive an awful lot slower (not through want of trying I suspect ::))

Everyone will have a different opinion. My dad, RIP, would pick a mega hard Far East tyre for cost and durability. And I understand that. I don't agree, but I do understand.

Spot on   :y - remember its not just you that you need to look after....too often forgot these days.

Me - I go with personal experience.  I'll try a tyre and if it suits my wallet and driving style then I'd class it as good and buy it again.  If its rubbish then I move on.  Tyre comparisons are generally useless as the main variable - ie how you plant the power - can't be standardised in such tests.

And to fuel the arguement a bit - I've just put some Alpha's on mine based on good experience with them in the past....

'87 Astra.....a classic?  :o

you're 'avin a giraffe mate  ;D ;D
Back up big boy i said not a classic yet...read the post! You can do a clutch for £50 in an hour on these, coz GM were good enough to fit inspection plates for us to take off, even i can manage.
Still take it to any classic/VX show. When did you last see another? 8-)

you did - sorry  :y

it'll never be a classic, despite achieving old age -  had a 1.4L "H" reg - terrible car in whats known as lovely "corpse blue" - you know that flat blue colour VX insisted on ruining cars with in the 90's  ;D

wallowy, uncomfortable, underpowered, poorly put together - maybe i had one of the friday afternoon ones  :(

no, I think most afternoons were much the same :D

Likewise I had a 1.4 LX on an L plate - wallowy wasn't the word!  Having said that I clocked up nearly 80k miles in it & it was uber-reliable.  I thought it a very comfortable and economical motorway commute-mobile tho

Some of the problems were caused by 3.0 cams :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[
Then drive within the limitations of your tyres ,and not your camshafts :y
Stick some Kumhos on. you know it makes sense :y

Yep, agree about the Kumho's. KU31's seem to have the balance between performance and price correct.

Agreed - just stuck some on my Calibra.  Not sure how long they'll last but they certainly did well in the snow before xmas and I have no issue with grip (unlike the Michelin Pilots it had on beforehand....)

Just open it over the street drain (outside the neighbours house of course).

Simple, no mess, no disposal issues!  ;D
