Omega General Help / Swirl Flaps anybody ?
« on: 25 February 2018, 13:44:12 »
"It's down on power" says I,
"Could be carbon build up in the inlet manifold" says Ee (I live in Somerset), "you could do that yourself".
So I decided to have a go at cleaning the inlet manifold and replace the apparently leaking inlet manifold top gasket on my '03', 2.2 DTI Miggy.

Now they are predicting Siberian weather next week, with a wind chill factor of - "Ere !" (I did say I live in Somerset), so I decided to get on with it yesterday.

Having removed most everything out of the way, including fuel lines and vacuum tubes  . . . major fiddle, I managed to get the top half of the inlet manifold off. Eeeeeeeeew !  . . . severe build up of carbon and other oily residues, most of which eventually ended up on the tools, the washing up bowl, the spray cans of cleaner, the white spirit bottle, a passing cat, every door handle in the house and the neighbour.

OK, cleaning that would be fairly straighforward. What about the the inlet manifold and those wonderfully named . . . . Swirl Flaps . . . . F'nark, F'nark, F'nark. The black oily moonscape which was the inlet manifold huddled threateningly on the side of the block and I could make out severely encrusted  . . . . Swirl Flaps . .  F'nark . . . oh forget it. There's one . . . two . . . er . . . " . . . hang on a minute . . ." (a Bluebottle moment there)  . . . shouldn't there be more than two ?

"Ere !" . . . Look . . . I have told you where I live . .

Seven copper coloured nuts later I had the oily beast in my (oily) hands. A quick bit of screwdriver scraping . . . sure enough only two flaps. The one's for cylinder 1 and 2 were absent. A quick out of hours phone call to my mechanic guru . . . "Ere" . . you know . . .
"That's a new one on me"
"What can I do ?"
"Find the other two . .  they are too big to go through the inlet valves, then break the two remaining off, and run it like that. It will mean that the engine will be fully aspirated all of the time and you won't get the kick in the pants . The Engine Management will compensate for the increased air flow".

After several moments poking around in the inlet ports, I found one of the Swirl Flaps . . . ooooh ! . . . jammed in the port for no. 1 cylinder. A pair of long nosed pliers (wonderful things) were stuffed into the port and a flap (that's better) was gently removed with an accompanying tinckle as the second one fell out into the engine bay. Both  . . . I'm going to have to say it . . . Swirl Flaps . . . ahem . .  were lodged in the port for No. 1 cylinder. Look . . . I've no idea either !

Taking his advice I removed the two remaining Swirl Flaps . . . OK . . . I won't . . . by breaking the two tiny spot welds on each one attaching them to the pivot rod. Then set to cleaning everything up and chucking it all back together.

Luckily my battery is in good nick, so after a bit of prolonged cranking, the fuel finally primed and the engine was trying to start. Stopping and going through a second glow plug cycle fixed it, with the motor firing up, no problem.

I ran the car this morning (-1C) and all seems OK, but as predicted no hoof in the behind when asking for power. Now it's just a smooth delivery, with the speedo climbing as rapidly as it did before. I've tried a cold start this afternoon, with very pleasing results.

This is apparently an unusual occurrence, I cannot find any reference to this sort of issue elsewhere, so I thought I'd let you all know what I've been dealing with . . . for what it's worth.

Omega General Help / Omega 2.2 DTI Glow Plugs + Fuel hose
« on: 31 December 2017, 12:40:41 »
Many thanks to waspy for his excellent briefing on changing glow plugs for the 2.2 DTI Miggy.

A useful tip passed to me by the Garage owner who loaned me a 10mm long reach socket (without an internal step), was about how to extract the glow plugs once undone.

The whole process needs to be done on a hot engine, so actually grabbing the b*****s and extracting them was accompanied with "Ouch", "blimey" and "my word"!, until that is, my benefactor approached me brandishing a length of fuel line. Pushing aside my immediate thoughts of web sites "I only happened to stumble across . . . " I watched as he pushed one end of the hose onto the top of a Glow Plug and extracted it as neat as nine pence.

I was so taken by such a simple solution, that I thought I'd share it with the forum.

Maybe this post could get moved to waspy's for everyone to find easily.

Happy New Year to all,  :y

Nick

This is probably a really dim question but . . . .

If you replace the standard radio/CD player (CDR whatever) . . . what happens to the screen in the dash (TID?) ? Can that still be used ?  . . . if so are there special bits of kit needed ?

Thanks

Fixed !!! :D :D :D :D :D

Perished vacuum hoses . .. that's all

After much faffing about with diagnostics which kept on showing EGR valve "critical failure" faults and trying replacement components (vacuum solenoids etc.) we finally did a smoke test. Smoke started flooding out around the turbo vacuum solenoid and the one next to it.

Just about all the rubber unions to the vacuum solenoid (behind the radiator on the right) were perished with cracks which were just not visible when we checked them. The hard plastic vacuum tubes (3mm . . I think) are O.K..

After warming up, it ran brilliantly, loads of power and no engine management light at traffic lights and junctions. Result !  8)

I'm in the process of totally stumping my garage man with this one, and I have tried to find this fault in the forum  .. . but I have a headache now.

Omega B '03 plate 2.2DTI . . .

After starting and driving normally for a bit the Engine Management Light comes on as I slow down (I do . .. honest !) for traffic lights and junctions. Pulling away there is no power (limp mode) but as the revs slowly climb through 2000 the EML goes out and the beast takes off like a startled gazelle. After that it drives normally and will deliver the power I'm used to.

A single fault code comes up with an EGR valve fault but we've taken the vac hose off, applied a vacuum and when released you can hear the EGR valve closing. The solenoid was swapped out too and is working, plus there is vacuum going into the solenoid.

We've swapped out the solenoid for the turbo too . . . no joy, but again applying a vacuum to the turbo side makes it spin up normally. There is plenty of vacuum on the engine side and no apparent leaks .  . the brakes are not heavy either.

We've tried a new Air Mass detector ? (hot wire in a cylinder in the air intake hose) too, but that didn't stop the EML coming on and limp mode appearing.

Dan reckons it is likely to be a component rather than the ECU as the car comes out of limp mode by itself.

Anyone had this before ?

Thanks . . . in hope,

Nick

Omega General Help / Re: Windscreen wiper relay
« on: 18 February 2016, 08:02:24 »
It's probably too late to be of any use . . . . but . . . you can get a VW Wiper relay which is programmable (see . . . http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=89242.msg1143978#msg1143978). It fits in the same socket under the bonnet no problem.

When you want an intermittent wipe you just switch the wiper off using the stalk on the steering and when you want the wipers to wipe you simply switch the intermittent wipe back on.
The relay remembers the delay and will wipe using that interval . . . if that makes sense.     Simples !

I did this to my 2.2 DTi when I first got it a few years ago, and have never had any problems with that.

Hope this helps

Here's one that's got me stumped !

I changed the drivers door lock on my '03, 2.2 TDI Estate as it was so worn the key wouldn't work in the door. After changing the tumbler mechanism and several re-assembly's I got the Drivers' door finished.

However, the rear passenger door central locking had suddenly stopped working (it was fine up till then). I couldn't be arsed to do anything more than check the fuses 12,13 & 20 . . .  all fine, so I've lived with the immobilised door lock since then.
My New Years' resolution was to fix the darn thing, and suspecting the solenoid was the culprit, bought a complete lock from those nice people at Heathrow. Stripping off the door card in the rain I tested the new solenoid only to find that didn't work either. Another fuse check . . . all fine . . . now I'm stumped.
Is there a connector in the front door or something I could have disturbed when fixing that lock ?

Any ideas anyone ?

Whip the yellow oil filler cap in the cam cover off . . have a look underneath.

If there is a creamy coloured deposit, then the coolant is getting into the crankcase . . head gasket is stuffed.

A pressure test in the plug ports will indicate where about it is on the block (pot 1 or 4 etc.).

If that is the case warn whoever you get to do the job that the exhaust studs are very brittle and will shear off very very very very very easily if they haven't been touched before. That happened to me with the same engine which "my man" then proceeded to drill out and go straight into an oil gallery with.

There aint much metal in them thar cylinder heads !

Good luck

General Car Chat / Full Suspension Geometry Set Up
« on: 23 January 2012, 23:57:39 »
Gents (and any ladies out there)

Having sorted out the bushes on the front end of my 2.0 GLS, I needed to get the wheel alignment sorted out.

Quite by chance I stumbled across the contact details of Lee Colgan (07940658321) on the internet (well it passes the time at work  :y)

Lee runs a company called FCM Wheel Alignment, in Netham Road in Bristol. BS5 9PQ.

Arriving at the garage, Lee showed me the set up he uses which is a Hoffman (no idea what mark or model). he talked me through what he intended to do after I described the tramlining and uneven cornering characteristics of my Mig. Whilst he worked he described what he was doing and what he was looking for in terms of geometry settings. Describing in great detail exactly what the difference was between Camber, Tracking and Castor.

The upshot of it was that the tracking and the camber on the fronts were way off due to the new bushes, which he took great care to adjust (Lee apparently knows the guy that runs Wheels in Motion) to the optional settings. His system also detected a tracking issue with the rear offside wheel which was also dealt with (after unseizing the track control arm). Once that was sorted out the fronts were checked yet again.

The cars' handling has been transformed and I am highly impressed with the friendly professionalism Lee exhibited whilst he was working on my car. I will definitely be returning to FCM for a check next year.

I think you'll be as impressed as I was, and can recommend a visit.

All the best to everyone

Omega General Help / Full Wheel Geometry Check Up
« on: 23 January 2012, 22:35:39 »
I'm not sure if I'm allowed to pass on information about a one man band I've found in Bristol, who is equipped with a Hoffman set up, and can carry out full wheel alignment checks. I would like to recommend him to the forum as he has transformed the handling on my GLS Estate.

Can a Moderator please advise ?

Thanks

Omega General Help / Re: Fog Lights....
« on: 23 January 2012, 22:24:08 »
Suggest you buy a couple of those . . .

I recently fitted a set of front fogs to my 2.0 GLS, and finished the job off with the indicator bulb in the dash.

The front fog indicator light is at about 7 o'clock in the speedo dial  when you're driving. I managed to wreck the first bulb I put in by turning the thing the wrong way. It's very obvious which way it goes in if you have a quick squint inside the hole before stuffing the bulb in.  :D

Omega General Help / Re: Tramlining
« on: 03 January 2012, 09:32:07 »
Me too . . .

My basic 2.0 GLS ('52 plate) Estate tramlines as well, and has done ever since I got the bitch.

I am considering re-bushing the front end, and found that I can get polys for the lower fronts, but there are apparently none to be had for the rears in the front lower suspension arm. This would mean that I'd have to fit a new set of standard ones for the rears (front lower suspension arm).

Could the Guru's advise on this ?

I'm presuming that a full geometry check would be in order if I did go ahead with this ?

Omega General Help / Re: A couple of questions . . .
« on: 04 December 2011, 20:43:33 »
Hi you lot,

Just to finish off this thread . . .

Air Con issues: The Condenser on the air con system is leaking. I shot round to Halfords (I know  :-\ . . but they were doing a free air con system check  ::) ) They gassed it and the guy apparently froze his steel toecap. So I'm going to be sourcing a new condenser unit in the new year.

Fog Lights: I eventually got round to looking at the problem of fitting them. I rang Steve at Heathrow, and he was really great. He expalined the system and flogged me a new piece of wiring loom. The loom from the outside temp sensor to the first main loom plug is replaced with feeds for the fogs and the sensor.

A trip to Vauxhall got the screws and the plastic plugs they screw into for a couple of quid.

Basically I fitted the whole lot on Saturday morning, including changing the main light switch with the extra foglight button (this is where the relay is housed), and  . . . nothing  :(

Then I remembered Rob G's post . . the fuse ! D'oh. One 20 Amp fuse later brilliant kerb lighting !

Now all I need to do is adjust the flamin' things

Many thanks to you all for the help . . no doubt "I'll be back"

All the best,

Happy Christmas (Bah humbug)
