Omega General Help / why and how
« on: 07 December 2010, 10:21:29 »
I have to go away for my job normally only a couple of weeks at a time but when I come back and start my car (2.5 V6 Auto) things rattle for about a minute after that it's the normal very quite idle.
I assume this is because there is no oil at the top of the engine and the lifters are empty.
Why does this happen is there not a oneway valve which stop the oil draining from the head?
How do I stop it happening, what is the best way to start after not running for a couple of weeks.
Thanks

Omega General Help / Re: how big a job is it...

Change my gear box in May 2009.
Jacked the car up and got it onto 4 stands
Took the old box out un-bolted it and just let it drop.
Pulled out from under the car on a plank of wood using a rope.
Slid the replacement under in the same way.
I then jack the box into place using a scissor jack using lots of blocks of 3x3 wood building a platform as I went.
Once it was at the right hight put 2 rods into the engine to box mounting holes and slid the box into place along the rods.
Did the mounting bolts up taking the rods out for the last two bolts.
It took about a hour to jack the box into place and do the bolts up so take your time.
The box I purchased off e-bay for £70 plus delivery I changed the fluid and filter, now done over 40K miles
and is running very well.
I hope you can fix it

Omega General Help / Re: cam shaft sensor
« on: 21 October 2010, 16:33:37 »
Hello Kevin
Thank's for the explanation
I always like to know how things work.
Maybe the cam sensor wiring had got old as the car has done 235K and I have no record of it being changed, (I got a lot of paperwork with the car as it was an ex-lease)

Thanks Kevin
So do you think that there was another problem and because I had it apart to put the sensor on that i put something else right.
I change the crank sensor a couple of weeks ago an that did not fix it.

Omega General Help / cam shaft sensor
« on: 21 October 2010, 13:58:23 »
Ok what's the point of cam shaft sensor.
The engine timing comes from the crank shaft sensor.
The crank shaft and the cam shaft will stay timed unless the belt slips, if it breaks and the cam shaft sensor detects the shaft has stopped it won't stop the engine in time
My V6 was running very odd, sometimes it had no power, or it would take an age to start, also got autogear boxes message on the display.
Check the error codes had 127
So swapped the sensor for a spare and all the problems have gone away it's like driving a new car again.

change the sensor over the weekend with a new spare Vauxhall unit I had,
This has made NO different. (still no codes)
I have found that it starts better in this cool mode if I give it a small amout throttle
Could this be a problem with the temp sensor used by the ECU so it's it thinks it still cold and is injecting to much fuel?
Thank

Omega General Help / starting issue
« on: 24 September 2010, 13:51:10 »
Hi
My V6 is giving a problem when starting from cool
it's instant start when cold almost does not have to crank, the same when up to temp but if the temp is between cold and normal the engine takes an age to start.
There are no fault codes
it was serviced 5k ago with new filters and plugs.
breathers cleaned
any ideas or do I just have to live with it.
Note: it has done 232K miles

I had a fire when the cam cover gasket failed
It did not damage the wiring but I had to get a new cam cover because it melted the edge and the gasket would not fit

Omega General Help / Re: Cataclean

Hi
Used to get my last MOT.
It greatly reduced emissions from failing very badly to just a fail
so had to change 1 of the CATs.
But without it I would of had to change both.
Cost compared to a CAT I think it's worth a go.

Ok did the compression test all readings ok and within 10%.
Found that plug in number 6 was a real mess so fitted new plugs and clean all the breathers.
Wow it runs so much better now. :)
Had it rechecked and the hydrocarbons and now passing and the lamda readings are good and the same for both banks.
BUT
CO is still too high,
I am going to give one of the CAT cleaner products a go. I am told CataClean is the best at £18 a bottle
has anyone tried this?

If this does not work I assume it's new CAT time
Thanks for your help

Omega General Help / emission
« on: 30 April 2010, 15:16:13 »
Hi
MOT is due soon so I had a mate who owns a garage check out the omega (1997 V6 2.5 226K miles)
everything was ok but the emissions test
the hydrocarbons and the CO are measuring twice the MOT pass level.
He plugged in to the diaganostic port and looked at the lamda sensors they show that bank 2,4,6 has the
un-burn hydrocarbons.
He suggested that a cyclinder could have low comperssion or a plug is not firing every time.
I am going to do a compression test over the week end but are there any other suggestion of were to look.
Thanks

The bush just pushed out using a vice and some spaces.
the car had done about 155k miles when it went wrong, now up to 199.5K miles still going strong. :)

Had this problem.
When we got it apart there was bad scoring on the torque converter and this had badly damage the seal.
Fitted a refurbished torgue converter approx £200
new seal about £20
new front bush £25.
All is running ok done about 30k miles no problem.
