Omega General Help / Re: Brake problem pulling side to side
« on: 13 September 2014, 09:51:24 »
When I had this problem with my old Omega it turned out to be the rear bush of the wishbone, the wishbones were not that old, under normal checks everything seemed fine, but with the car on the ground and steering on full lock rocking it back and fore showed the rear wishbone bush moving in and out with a fair amount of play.

As said timing chains/tensioners a weak point.Ideally you want to see evidence that these have been changed for the uprated 4.2 litre ones.First tensioners were plastic which fell apart,Jaguar changed them later for plastic/metal ones, which fell apart.Percieved wisdom is that any engine with the Nicasil linings that has lasted thus far should be o.k.-it was the high sulphur content in the petrol at the time that caused the wear.Gearboxes I believe are the sealed for life type-they certainly were on the XJ from '97 on.I have also heard that the thermostat tower[plastic again]can get brittle with age and leak, alloy ones are available from the U.S.A.

Most of the later gearboxes are said to be sealed for life but the oil can still be changed anytime you like, just like any other box, just make sure LT ATF goes in.

The S-Type V8 aren't a bad car engine wise, the problem with the bores was only on the very early V8s (pre 1999), they are also known for tensioner problems so you want to make sure they have had the modified tensioners fittied as changing the timing chain in the S-Type involves removing the engine due to limited room, on the upside if the tensioners or chains do fail they tend not to bend valves so long as your not travelling at a pace. They are known for rear lower suspension arm bushes and shock absorber bushes, the seat moving back when opening the door is easily avoided by switching it off auto using the switch on the steering column cowling, the gearboxes on the later cars aren't as troublesome as the early cars, they are known for leaking from the sump and multi plug tube but those are easily sorted, the electronic handbrakes can also be troublesome on these, not a big job but fairly pricey. Also the pre 2001 cars are also known for excessive corrosion to the rear subframes.

General Car Chat / Re: Jaguar XJ12 Vanden Plas
« on: 13 February 2014, 21:50:22 »
Currently have a really nice 1978 4.2 Vanden Plas in at work in a goldish colour, has a very nice interior, the rear seats are separate and quite large and they don't feel at all like a car of its era when you drive them.

General Car Chat / Re: Bentley the next car?
« on: 21 June 2013, 18:24:21 »
We have two of these come into the garage I work at, they are a lot of car for little money and for the size are very rapid, they only rev to about 4K, you'd probably see a maximum of about 10mpg, the rear spring seats tend to rot and parts are notoriously expensive, but provided you look around you should find a decent one which has had all the common issues sorted, the gearbox selector shaft seals tend to start leaking and they use a mineral based brake fluid which I believe is also not cheap, only had a problem with running one of them once which turned out to be an ignition coil which is basic wear and tear, the owners seem to do a fair bit a mileage and talk highly of the reliability for a car of that ages, they are very comfy inside with enough room for 5 adults with plenty of room to stretch, the boot space is massive. Also the front callipers are known to seize but this is easy enough sorted with a rebuild kit.

Thanks! :y :y

How much does the servicing bill on these come to on average please? ??? ???

Personally I have never seen the full bills so can't comment of that, I know most parts are very expensive but that's about it, but most people who do own these cars are rolling in money.

Diesel X-Types are well known for injector failure and EGR problems, the inlet manifolds fill with soot and get blocked.

General Car Chat / Re: LPG'ing the Jag!
« on: 07 January 2013, 22:19:34 »
Most problems are caused by fitters who in reality don't have a clue what they are doing, they can fit the main components and thats about it, if looked into properly it can be done successfully, though the Jag ECU's do tend to be overly sensitive to little changes in any parameters it sees.

Be prepared for an almost constant EML, most LPG'd Jags whether the V6 or the V8 almost always throw up lean running codes or misfire codes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7vfyR22SWU Some idea's on this video

Though that video is useful that is the early suspension setup so does not show how to properly check the later suspension, though the only difference is the front bottom arm is now two pieces and the shock absorber bush is incorporated into the lower arm.

Front ARB bushes are all to common on these and if it is the later suspension type you will have to bottom arms, the front one sometimes wheres out the bush that connects to the hub and and sometimes the large round bush towards the engine side tends to split and sometimes makes a knocking noise, we have also had problems like this where the shock has been at fault.

Also when checking for play did you pull hard diagonally on the rear wheels as this is how you check for play in the rear lower suspension arm inner bushes, rear ARB links are also common and sometimes hard to detect any play.

Forgot to mention the only way to check for play in front upper balljoint is to get a prybar under it and pry at it to check for play, these are often missed when trying to diagnose a knock.

Being young myself I think with all the crap that is on the news today people tend to focus all the negativity they see on the news and other places with all of a specific generation and not base their opinion on the person they meet but rather on what they see or hear.

I often had people call me trouble, call me a waste of space, etc purely based on the way I dressed as I was a skater I tended to wear baggy clothes, people would not judge me on who I actually was, and I had seen this happen to many people, Once whilst delivering papers on my round I was going into a house to post a paper at the same time as one of their elderly neighbours, he walked away and waited untill I left the garden based purely on my dress sense, because accorrding to the media youths were all trouble!

So all I have to say is don't base judgement on what is read or purely passed on about a certain generation, a certain culture, etc because not all of them are the same it is usually just the minority of them that are like that, make judgement on the people themselves as you may be quite surprised as to how different those people are to what you believe.

Majority of people I meet from the age of 13 to my age are generally quite happy and are well in tune with the real world, the only ones I tend to find who are unhappy or depressed are the bullied who get what they don't deserve either because of the way they look or the lack of things they have, etc, and also the spoilt who get given far too much and have everything handed to them on a plate to make life easier and seem to think they should have more because that is how they were brought up, I know a few people who are always complaining they are unhappy because they don't have this and they don't have that because their parents spoon fed them everything, I also know a lot of gamers who a very happy and also are very in tune with reality, they have a good balance between work, gaming and a social life.

I know a girl just like that, she moans that she has no money and moans that she has to give her mother half of her dole money to pay her keep, yet she makes no effort to look for work and has said out of her own mouth she doesn't want a job where she has to work long hours and get minimum wage or even start early because she doesn't like to get up early, whilst at the same time she has also made no effort to try and get any sort of qualification to help with getting a better job, whilst someone else I know would not claim dole and looked constantly for a job and the only one they could find involves starting at 6 in the morning one week and then 5 in the evening the next, some people just seem to want everything handed to them on a plate.
