What difference does the bufferred / unbuffered make?

The more I think about I would benefit from the ECC in my machine allthough it has just worked its socks off with out a hiccup it was on a low speed 32 bit CPU with DDR (Might even be SDram as I havent looked for ages)

In future it will be based on at least a dual core if not a Q6600,
buffered/unbuffered are incompatible with each other.  Which you need is a function of the memory controller in the northbridge (intel server chipsets), mch (intel desktop chipsets), processors (intel i7 and AMD processors)

Q6600? From memory, 2.4G with 800Hmz fsb? May be better off getting 2.33G with faster fsb

Fair point.

I got a bargain of a bundle off a mate.  4 x PC8500 1GB, Q6600 and a Gigabyte GA EP35C DSR3, plus a load of bits inc a firewire PCI card, water cooling blocks and a load of HDMI connectors etc for £ :-X   So the CPU was not an orininal purchase by me.

New, £200 is without watercooling, 2nd hand, £50-£70 without watercooling would be approaching bargain territory....

I have told him when he upgrades I would consider all his cast offs.  His latest purchase is a Q9650 and a top of the rage Asus mobo. ::)  Along with 8 GB of DDR3 ::) ::)    I have started saving allready. :P

I am not an Asus fan.  But if the price is right then I dont care as it can be off loaded.

Have recently been a Gigabyte fan, but the delayed write errors have reared thier head and it's switching the Sata drives off on my current board again.  Sad really as its just undergone 2 days solid of disk sorting and transfering with 5 hard drives connected to it and networked to 2 other computers.  As soon as I back off it starts acting up again.

I have gone away from gigabyte myself after reliability issues 2 or 3 years ago.

For self build, I tend to stick to Intel mobos now, as I have yet to have a single mobo failure (or even unexpected hardware crash) in the 12 or so years I have been using Intel boards.
