Replacing the thermostat
« on: 23 November 2010, 11:30:05 »

Is it advisable to replace the whole unit (expensive) or is it OK to replace just the thermostat (cheap).

Think most replace the housing too, Im sure the design has changed and often the pipe that attaches to it as well (or at least the orings)  You need shorter bolts too, or a hacksaw  :y

Yes, I know that, but you can buy the thermostat separately (aftermarket), I just wondered if anyone had done that.

I've just replaced a thermostat, during  my engine rebuild. I didn't need to take apart the housing and pipe where I had the engine apart. The advice by an Vauxhall mechanic that I was talking to when I went to buy the housing gasket, not realising this is supplied as part of the kit, which I had ordered of Ebay, is that the housing quite often breaks when you do this, which is why the whole unit often needs replacing.

Once you have the housing off it take about 2 minutes to change the thermostat using the cardboard tube supplied in the kit to remove the old one and inset the new one.

The thermostat kit cost £7.20 on Ebay and is QH brand, compared to £23-25 for the complete unit. If you just buy the thermostat, it would probably be a good idea to get a replacement o-ring for the pipe and housing joint as this does not come as part of the kit.

I hope this is of help.

Need 2 seals at end as well (which you may have if you were planning on changing stat), though these vary with engine no.  The pipe itself is same across all V6s.

 12 90411629 13 38 320 PIPE, THERMOSTAT HOUSING TO HOSE    1

 13 90410899 13 38 471 SEAL, RING  (E)
(E)  -08378122
      -14393646
 2

13 9129999 13 38 202 SEAL, RING
(E) 08378123-
