Help heater pipe
« on: 30 April 2013, 18:04:08 »

Flushed heater matrix today and all was well till driving in town the top hose popped off, obviously not refitted correctly.  Engine cool but pipe will not go back.  locking ring fully rear, but pipe goes onto heater pipe so far then it feels as if it is to small.  Hellppp need car laods tommorow and sure this is something simple.

matrix pipe has a lip on it & the plastic connector has a groove, so press the hose onto the aly pipe until the groove goes over the lip then slide the lock ring into position, make sure none of the tags on the end of the connector are damaged, if they are it will never stay in position & will keep popping off under pressure. Only other options are to replace the hose or cut the plastic connector off the hose & secure the hose over the pipe with a jubilee clip

not getting very far and now getting desperate as need to fix tonight.  Are the hoses both same size? one with qwhite ring and one balck, hose rfrom top of HBV is going to top pipe.  If I have to cut and hose clip is the pipe the same bore or is it reduced by means of the connector

Yes I have read those but they are of no use at all to my question I know how they go on and off and how to flush which I mentioned in my orginal post.  What i was asking was why will the connector not go any further onto the pipe? secondly I am now going to have to cut as the connector is goosed, so next question was is the heater pipe of sufficient small bore to fit the heater matrix pipe.

if they came off, they should go back on....you may need some lube and ensure locking ring fully open, twist and push, should lock back on ok/

Thats it I have spent all afternoon and most of this evening trying to refit it, push it on and it goes so far then feels like it is undersized, lubed, twisted, pushed shoved all to no avail, and now the ring has snapped, I need to drive tommorow so I ask if I cut the pipe and secure with a hose clip will it be a tight fit on the matrix pipe

That I cant answer sorry, Given youve broken it, I guess you are nothing to lose territory.

Guess hot water will help if its tight, and ptfe tape if its loose, as a temporary measure.

What I did when my heater matrix let go and needed to use the car was to remove both the bulk hed heater pipes.

Get a 150mm piece of 15mm copper pipe with nice clean square ends and just push it tight into each end of the quick fit connecter till it wont go any further in effect bypassing the heater matrix. With a few cable ties around each end and then looped together to stop it pushing out under pressure mine held tight for several weeks and a few 1000 miles.

If you have damaged the ends atleast that will allow you to re-plumb the coolant system, albeit you wont have any heater at all.

When you can, get both heater hoses new from VX and replace when you have the time.

This fix will get you mobile and all that is needed is a small bit of copper pipe.Dont leave it like that too long though as unsure what effect copper and coolant have  :o

Well it looks like it will be going under the knife, am still at a loss as to why it only goes so far then feels like an obstruction, have had this on and off a couple of times osrting out the matrix, running today it was brilliant heat ;) till the pipe popped.  Only hope that this pipe is available as a spare, no miggys in scrap yard, but might post in wanted.

The sliding ring is the part that has parted company but still trying the hose to no avail
Will post tommorow to let you know the result.

As I said,Bob,if you need to replace the rubber heater pipes due to damage on the quick fit unions the fix with the piece of copper pipe will work as you have more room to push the pipe into than that on the matrix.

Just get it as far into the connecter as possible and make up a few cable ties to ensure it won,t pull out .

It will get you out of a hole for the morning till you can pull it all apart and renew the pipes

Bit of an update, cutting the hose is NOT an option due to the bore being to big to fit the matrix pipe,  so ne pipe ordered £8 VX) checking the old one found all the plastic is brittle to the popint of being soft.

I note on the how to do it that if you cant push the locking ring forward then it is not on far enough, I assume that is why on checking the new pipe I can not move the locking ring.

One final flush to remove the bits from emergecny top and then batttle the hose.
