crank sensor woes part 2
« on: 26 May 2011, 14:48:02 »

Hi all
Further to my post of the 22nd may I returned to the garage to inform them of the ongoing problem of the crank sensor (driving OK for 2 weeks then cutting out continually) car was returned to garage picked it up after they told me no fault codes were evident, although I was still getting 0335 and 0340.Drove 200 yds down the road cut out on me as I went round a bend steering locked and I narrowly missed going into a wall.Back to Garage 4hrs later and a phone call I go back to Garage and the car is up on the hyd lift, the mechanic shows me that the problem is oil leak,I am assuming from the cam covers as I have purchased new gaskets from Andyc but did not have time to change them as I was overtaken by the crankshaft sensor problem. So here I am with a cause I am not sure is genuine .Next I take the car from the garage fortunately no charge get about 1/2 mile from home you;ve guessed car cuts out and I wait 5 mins try the starter off we go and I manage to get home    Next step is to eliminate the oil leak and see what happens,to further complicate matters when I checked the sensor I saw that the cable was tucked up behind the oil cooler pipes and from a post on here I read that it was not a good idea to do that. I will try and reroute cable when I am doing Gaskets
My concerns are
1 Is an oil leak likely to cause my problem or is it B------t
2 How likely is it that tucked behind the oil cooler pipes will cause problems
3 Since the new sensor was fitted The car ran ok when cold but started acting up when hot, leave it to cool and it would start ,however the problem is now much worse and is cutting out hot or cold
4 Once I cure the leak should I cut my losses buy a new sensor from uk and fit myself, would have done the first one myself but needed to get the car back on road as my daughter was flying back to Uk in 2 days and I could not get one sorted .
Am not a happy bunny at the moment as I need to get the car running A1 as I am driving back to UK for a wedding on 17th June
would appreciate your responses guys, anyone over here on holiday in the vendee and  feel like they could help! I could do with a good samaritan  :'( :'( :'( :'(

Was your crank sensor genuine?

remember a new part doesnt mean a working part.

oil leak is not causing this, it will be the crank sensor, which I take it from your post is a pattern one?

Im sure if you replace it, and route the wires away from heat, all will be fine.

Thaks for the quick reply jimbob,I now have a further prob in that I am going to order a new sensor but as I have had the original one replaced by a french garage nearly 3 weeks ago  and I can only accept that they fitted the correct part ,(also not being a good french speaker it,s difficult to discuss technical issues) I dont know the correct pt no as i have read that there are two types regardless of engine particulars  Ho Hum perhaps Andyc will be able to help me

Thanks andy B for the offer but I,m going to need the car back on the road asap, public transport non existent over here.  ref. the part no as I assume I have the wrong sensor fitted I can (hopefully) obtain the number and buy the other (the correct one) Have seen a post from another site that describes my problem

That's good, it was chosen by a process of eeny meeny miney mo  ;D ;D Keep a look out for a black Omega before you make you way back to Blighty  ;) ;)
I wish I was brave enough to jump this sinking ship aka UK

Re part numbers, confusingly now, TC site gives two different numbers for the sensor, as it does now for my car. It used to just give one.  :-/ andyc will know  :y

I think they must've introduced a glitch to the Matrix  :-? ;D ;D ;D

We'll be down near Royan from July 29 .. so if you need anything bringing down just yell. I always have the maxscan with me .. so could reset/read engine codes if needed.

Hopefully you'll have everything sorted by then ... but just as a backstop .....  :)

And Andy .. St Julien is a lovely little village.. if you've not been there before you'll love it ....... but it did have one little "oddity" when we were there ... I wonder if you'll spot it !!!!  :) We stayed at "La Foret" and had a brilliant time :)
