Last time I was in Costco, they have Tunnie's one back in, was thinking of treating myself, but I couldn't lift it in the trolley ;D

;D ;D The dangers of being a cripple!

Although .. if anyone should happen to pass a Costco and feel awfully generous, I'd love one of those jacks (it's lower entry than my 3T jack by a long shot) ;) (I'd pay, obviously ;D)

If you want the jack to last, ESP with a Tarmac drive, you really need a minimum of 2.5 ton jack.

That's ashame. With dosh being tight ideally I only wanted to spend around the £60-£70 mark.

If I buy this as a ''starter'' kit with the view to upgrading in the future do you think I'll incur any probs with one of these kits?
Mate, both of those are made of chocolate. Buy sumat decent. Ratchet stands, 2.5/3.0 ton jack.

The creeper will never get used, and the jack pictured won't lift the car high enough to use it under the car anyway... blocks of wood will do for chocks.

Save your money for sumat worth spending on.

Chris, once you've picked yourself up off the floor ( ;D ) we agree on this one  :y

Those 2 tonne Jacks are ideal for an emergency wheel change at the side of the road - that is honestly it.

For trying to lift / work on the car, they are shite. total shite.

The Clarke 3 tonne job (or any other 3 tonne jack for that matter) will be MUCH more stable.

I also clearly recollect a post on here whereby one of those axle stands collapsed. Potentially fatal.

Don't do it Webby ;)

My recommendations are:

Jack

Machine mart - Clarke 3 tonne professional job at £75 plus the dreaded....

Stands

Machine Mart again - £71 plus the dreaded... 4 tonne capacity...

I personally prefer these to the majority of ratchet type stands sold, because these ones have a great head which the chassis rail nicely sits in = total guaranteed security.... whereby the ratchet ones are not very deep, and don't seem to 'fit' the chassis rail that well...

In perspective Webby, £146 plus Vat for a decent safe lifting kit which will last years, isn't a great deal ;)

Thanks all.

Went to Halfords tonight and got the axel stands and jack (2 tonne ''big red'') for £39.99. i opted to save a bit of dosh on the 5 piece set inc. creeper and some other 'dangle berries'. i know you posted loads and thanks for that.... unfortunately couldn't get to read them in time as i been busy all day.

Now it definitely fits under the car but already, as you folks have posted, it doesn't look as substantial as I'd like.

So, tomorrow I'm going to give it a whirl and take it back irrespective of performance and get the ones you dudes suggested. I am due a Costco trip so I'll give that a go ;)

by the way, can i put the axel stands under the sills? i know they sit nicely on the chasis but just a thought :)

If you're planning to take back... don't use it. If it's marked etc, you may struggle... as it won't be in resalable condition :y

I have one of these, excellent bit of kit, but very difficult to manoeuvre, but I do use it on a really rough surface so can't complain  :y

Not on sills. Use the re enforced areas and chassis rails in board of the sills.

Thanks all again for the comments. i will defo use axel stands as i too am paranoid!!!

the stands i have are 1 tonne each (obviously 2 tonne the pair). so when i'm doing the front pads on the drivers side can i use just one axel stand near the front or should i really have one at the front drivers side and one at the back? or will the one on drivers side at front be ok?

the reason i ask is cos where the car is parked i cant really get to the passeger side to jack that up and do those pads so just going to practise on the drivers side.

hope that makes sense lol

I have same stands JamesV6 posted, they are much, much better than the Machine Mart ones, they fit nicely on the chassis rail, without damaging it.

Also I don't like the Machine Mart jack, I find its "teeth" too big and it tends to dig in a lot

I thought each stand should take 2 tonne or is that as a load spread on 2 stands ?

Hi chaps... right is this the correct place for the jack to go? i jacked it up and i got scared  :-[ as it was creaking a tad. however, i think its the right place and i was going to place 2 axel stands next to each other just behind the jack. that ok?
