Near Disaster !!!
« on: 24 March 2012, 18:06:13 »

Just changed the windscreen washer pump - all good works fine  :)

Suddenly plumes of white smoke billowing out from under the bonnet from offside rear of the engine bay and alarm sounding a constant tone  :o
Whilst I disconnected the battery a neighbour came over with a fire extinguisher.

The source was between the servo and the wing right under thw winscreen scuttle, what is in there that has got too hot?

Powersounder batteries leaking causing self-combustion.

My guess is the power sounder has just given up the ghost ... not unknown for these to catch fire ... remove it in the interim.

What they said /\

It has it's own power, remove ASAP. Bit late now though, but to avoid any further risk...

Correct! Burnt out at the connection - power sounder and connector US

Will the car run OK without the power sounder in place?

Wires look Ok

Off to the local breakers 2moro for a unit & about 6" of wire with the connector.

Bad idea, if replacing the PS, go new.

As Adey says.
Pricewise around the £65 mark, be advised a few different part numbers so check yours first

Yep, all of the original ones are failing, so pointless getting 2nd hand.

I'd also sorry about one that'd been on the shelf too long, as the age of the batteries is what matters. Check the date of manufacture on the back.

If you can cut open the old one and take some photographs of the damage I'd be interested. I've been trying to understand the exact failure mode of these...
