i could very well get flamed for this........in fact i am pretty sure i will, but hell, here goes.....

These people come to Britian for a number of reasons, 30/40 years ago this very same conversation was taking place, except that time we were referring to Asian/Chinese/Pakistan people, and again the complaint was that they were taking our jobs.

Thos guys grafted, as a collective they took a lot of crap from the british public, today some of the richest people in the UK are from that ethnic group, they just got on with it, they were focused and had something that a lot of people in the UK don't have today...........
a work ethic.

The poles, bosnians, russians, they are no different.

For example, i have a friend who runs a business, him, and two other guys, one is a immigrant, the other a local, they get paid the same money and do the same job, but the immigrant is there 30 mins before he needs to be and doesn't finish until he is told by his boss to go home, he is hard working, does an excellent job and  does it a lot quicker than the local who is always late, does a crap job and always finds someway to do as little as possible.

All they are doing is trying to live, i don't dispute that there are possibly too many in the UK today, but some of the people in the UK believe they have a god given right to have a job over these people, they don't, the job goes to the person who is best suited to doing it.

look at the jobs these people take? they are jobs that many others will not do, jobs that people consider menial, and they do them with pride, why? because they are making something of their life.

In 20 years time don't be surprised if we start seeing poles and bosnians on the rich list........

i feel for those who have lost out and are grafters, i have in the past, but market forces dictate who gets the work

i'll get me coat
I agree 100%. Have a look at parts of Spain, Marbella in particular they have become mini UK's so the Eastern Europeans aren't the only ones moving around. The main issue of contention is not against the hard workers who come here, its against those who come for benefits, to give birth and then return home without paying the bill, to have their children educated and pay nothing into the system etc. When you arrive in the UK you should not be able to claim anything until you have 3 years of unbroken tax and NI contributions behind you.Schools all over England should teach English as the first language and all others second. Before being given permission to stay and work the return fare home should be lodged with the Government, repayable after the 3 year qualifying period.

Interesting thread. I agree with Jay W comments as well.

Large parts of southern spain (not just marbella ) a ghettoes of English (and germans/dutch etc). Spain loves it generally as the incomers have sold their (expensive) houses in Britain and arespending here instead. That is good for the economy in general. The only downside is a lot of the people are old at or near retirement and when they are eligible (65) they become a drain on the Spanish health system.

What is interesting is younger expat people are eligible for virtually NOTHING from the Spanish social system. It is hard to get a proper job. The Spanish give them to their family/mates and a lot of civil service jobs are like they were in Britain 30 years ago. Dead wood, plodders, jobs for life, promotion earned on length of service not ability.....

What is wrong is that the British benefits system is totally over the top. Years ago, I fell on hard times after losing my job. I qualified for naff all as I had some savings. I too think it is a bit poor that people with nothing seem to be able to get loads. The only way to change the benefits system is through the ballot box.

There are loads of low paid jobs in Spain in farming. People Q up outside labour exchanges and are picked up by gang masters at the crack of dawn and driven long distances in some cases to work all day in plastic greenhouses in this heat, picking fruit and veg all for 4 or 5 euros an hour NOT paying toward the state social or benefitting from it.. Then they Money transfer it back to the home country at one of the many shops that specialise in doing just that. Some even have their own newspapers in Romanian, Peruvian etc
