Not on a modern diesel there isnt.
Spark generation does not consume much juice and common rail injectors are pretty power hungry (consider they fire 8-15 times per cycle!
)
As for the surge Nigel, fear not, the alternators cant put out greater than the peek current and are protected against driving discharged loads. The potential voltage step would only be a few volts and the edge speed would not be overly great due to the current limit dropping the volts.
Simples!

Merci ..

Now if I had known that yesterday .......

However, the job is done, Mr Mastercard is feeling fatter by a considerable amount

but the car is driveable an I have no need to rush about like a wild thing trying to sort it before 1600 today ... when I leave for a weekend on the lash ... I have a large reunion to attend which will involve much drinking tonight, a formal dinner tomorrow, and probably require intravenous paracetamol on sunday !!! Work for 3 days then away in the tin tent over the bank holiday as I'm organising a function with over 40 vans attending, and numerous other activities including a garden party and a queen tribute band/dance !!
Just when was I gonna get the chance to fix the alternator !!!
