On my old CD (poverty spec) pre-facelift the fixing screws were revealed by pulling all the knobs off. ;D

The ashtray is held in by a single screw. Hold down the spring loaded flap and use a long Pozidrive screwdriver to reach in to undo it. I think the trim clips onto the front of the ashtray but I wouldn't try to remove it with the ashtray in place because I don't think the mechanism is robust enough to cope.

I never tried to remove the tray under the handbrake. On my automatic facelift the gear lever surround is held in by two spring clips at the rear. With that popped out the screws holding the fake wood are easy to remove. My guess is that the pre-facelift was the same :-\

I have managed to remove the tray under the handbrake without hack sawing off the gear lever "auto"  :) I think that was the easy bit  ::) Ill have a look at the guide rob posted  :y

Is it the one with the climate control like this?

If so you need to reach up behind through the stereo aperture and feel for a flat aluminium bar about 6-7 inches long. This needs to be pulled downwards. It's quite hard to get it moving - I used a screwdriver to *carefully* lever it downwards at one end them worked across to the other end.
Once the bar is moved down the facia virtually falls out.

Sometimes the cage has a small nut or bolt in the back - you should be able to see it if you look into the aperture.

Often the best way to remove the cage is to pinch the top and bottom edges in the middle so that it bends away from the surround.  It's easy to bend it back to straight when you refit it.

Sucks (samples) air from the cabin so the climate control temperature sensor knows how hot/cold you are.

You mean the air/con has been removed ....  :-\ You car's interior still needs a sampling fan otherwise it'll give you all hot or all cold air and won't be able to maintain the temp selected.  ;)
