Halfords MOT,what a dickhead tester,
« on: 16 June 2012, 12:57:20 »

My daughter corsa just failed it's mot at Halfords in Cardiff, for excessive movement at the top of the front strut. This is a normal feature of a 2 year old corsa,it seems that if it was taken to a vauxhall dealer it would have passed.
Maybe someone should tell Halfrauds about it,they quoted £175 to fix it.
Has anyone else had a poor experience at Halfords.

3 years for first MOT. Alfie's daughter's Corsa is 4 years old. That's how I read it. I think..... ;D ;)

Hi Opti, you read it right,it's 4 yr old this week, sorry if I was'nt quite clear on this point.A bit of play at the sturt mounting is normal and acceptable on late model corsas,I don't think that the tester had read his notes on this.
This is the downside of opting for a cheap mot,£27.50.I'm taken it to a VX garage monday.

It does not matter what age the car is, the test should be a fair one across all ages. You can have a look at the MOT testers up to date, DOT 'bible' here;
http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual/contents.htm
Once again.....Why go to Haflords in the first place? They will probably fail you merely to hope they can get more pennies for bits when they repair it at generally more cost (both labour and parts) than a decent local test station repair shop would. Same applies for Quick*hit.....take motors needing a test to a proper test staion and save yourselves the grief. I have not seen one good report yet about them but have seen many complaints about both institutions. Surely you must know other drivers who have had a good service from a local test station and repair shop? If not.....ask around and when you find a good, honest, reliable one stick with it as I have done and do.  :y

The daughter choose to use halfords purely because of the price, not expecting them to fail a 4 year old low mileage car on such a major part.
I expect her to visit this afternoon,it being fathers day,I'll check it over then.

PS If it should have failed on anything it should have been the amount of sweet wrappers and mess in the back seats from the kids.

If it should have failed on anything it should have been the amount of sweet wrappers and mess in the back seats from the kids.
Firstly, places such as Halfrauds, Kwik-$hit, etc are invariably staffed by semi trained lab rats that (if you are lucky) have nothing more than a basic knowledge of motor vehicle engineering.

Even though it shouldn't have any bearing on the outcome, if the car looks like a shit tip then the tester is already forming an opinion that the car isn't cared for, so if any faults are found that would ordinarilly be an advisory then the tester will more than likely err on the side of caution and fail it instead.

As for the actual reason for failure, you should appeal it as it is well documented.

I havn't seen the paper work yet,it seems that she will have it retested at a vx dealer. Her current mot runs out tuesday so time is short to muck about,I might try the appeal route if it passes at the vx garage.

The latest news,It PASSED,with no advisories not even a mention of any play in the strut or anywhere else. And thats from a main stealer.
So be warned give halfords auto centres a wide berth,

Complain to Halfords, though I'm sure their get out clause will be that the strut is a safety item & in the tester's opinion etc etc .......  >:(
