Cutting the army at the same time as you (the politicians) have sent them to war is disgraceful.
If we are to have a smaller armed service we must also accept imo that we arent the worlds policeman.we will need to become the type of country that minds its own business and keeps itself to itself.Cant have it both ways.

What conflict (not of our own making) are we actually expecting?  What we need is drones and drone pilots sitting in a nice air conned room somewhere.

No way, Varche. I can just see them helping out in a future conflict in the Falklands or, dare I say it, Gibraltar.

Just what we need is an EU Army, outside of NATO controlled by the Anti-US, Anti-NATO French, with Napoleon Hollende strutting the worlds stage like a peacock. The EU is being molded for French hegemony, but as usual they will fail as the Germans will control Europe. Money is what always talks in the end.

80,000 is too small for the Army to do what is expected of it. Reservists as okay for short conflicts, but what employer is going to want to loose staff for long periods. I could solve the Armed Forces funding problems in minutes, reform the MOD and cut them by 50%, scrap the overseas aid budget and use it to fund our armed forces. We are going to be needing them very soon as we all know how the last 1930's recession ended and the Euro is sending Europe in the same direction. Remember in the Greek elections, the communist and fascists have made  big gains in their numbers of MPs, the same will be happening soon in Italy and Spain.

Guffer, I hope you don't receive your redundancy notice so you are kicked out just before you complete your service. It means that you don't get your pension until 65 and this is a big scandal, being swept under the carpet by the Government at the moment. It is a absolute disgrace and damning incitement on the cynicism of MOD, Treasury, and the awful ComDems. To me they are breaching the covernance that exists between the armed force who put their lives of the line and the rest of society, where we expect the Government in return to treat you fairly and properly, not disgracefully like this.

I cant tell you the half of whats going on.  Needless to say that morale is rock bottom, people are going to leave in their droves.  There is an undercurrent of resentment as we feel somewhat disposable, you needed us when we were in Iraq and Afghan, times were good financially, recruitment was low and now that is over see you later tommy?  It stinks.  We do this job because we want to serve not because it's the only thing we can do.

Personally I wont get redundancy, rather they also are trimming numbers by restricting conversions of commission.  I get my last chance later this year and if I dont get it I am a civie next september with a half pension available once I reach 65. 

On the topic of common European Defense Policy...... not a fat chance in hell of that ever happening.  It has nothing to do with the soldiers, or the officers, or the ministers really.  It has everything to do with trade.  Every country has different interests and there is no common ground possible.  Anyone who thinks that it can work lives in La-La-Land.

The RN  is the same we are stretched to the max its not funny. yet we  are still making people redundant and gapping billets.

i dread the day an aircraft crashes and someone dies due to people making mistakes that could have been avioded if the man power was there to support the work load.

oh yeah Morale is at an all time low with us too!!!!!!!!!!

And yeah we do this cos we want to not because we cant do anything else its not a job its a way of LIFE and takes a certain calibre of person to do it!

I worked in a company that reduced its numbers in droves. We all thought the company wouldn't survive. It did although much smaller than it originally was. Moral was rock bottom.

Guffer. I sympathise with people who suffer or worse die as a result of serving King and country.  I really do. This current Afghanistan is just a sham. When we hand it over having sadly failed, the Taliban will back at the helm within six months. Were all those lives and injuries worth it? Why didn't other countries help more if it was so important?

Fifth biggest armed forces running over stretched. Yes. My point exactly. Just who the hell do we think we are? You don't see Spain or Germany rushing into every conflict at the drop of a hat. Why,  political points or arms sales.? (Arms sales for anyone wondering).

I will concede that the EU will not be able to get their heads around a common defence policy. I was wrong to hope for that logical cost effective solution. They cannot even save the euro.

Yes, I quite agree.  I became aware of the doctrine of ‘political expediency’ some years ago following a particularly nasty incident  (not the subject of the Guardian article) – it was as distasteful then as it is now (see below).
