In defence of banks (not bankers)
« on: 31 July 2012, 18:24:14 »

We have a savings account with santander. We have had it for years and were receiving a pathetic 0.1% interest. I noticed in a mag that a new version of the same account was available to new customers with a rate of 3.2%. I rang them up and said I wasn't happy. The nice man on the phone opened a new account for me there and then, took about five minutes with the security questions. He asked me to log on and I would see the new account, which I did. He asked to transfer the money from my old account to the new one. Did that. 'That's it' he said, 'I've changed over your ATM card and it will work with the new account, same PIN'. It did.

We have a current account with barclays. We pay £13 a month for it. It comes with free RAC cover for the wifes car, including homestart and forward transport to any UK location. The RAC were charging us £15 amonth for this until we cancelled. So, free banking.

When I transfer money from that account to the santander account, it is instant and the same the other way. As soon as I log off from one account and into the other, the money is there. Barclays pay 26 direct debits and standing orders for us every month, on time.

I am happy with the service I get from both banks, esp Barclays and I think the service provided is excellent.

PS. I am not one of these customers who wants to speak to a face, give me a robot every time ;D

£40 a year gets you the same from various other less well known, but just as good service providers.

the big problem is that you have to diary when your special rate deal expires otherwise it falls to 0.1%. I had a big row about this with Lloyds and got a large wadge back in interest that they had cleverly and quietly kept for themselves. Why they cannot email/write to you in large type near to expiry baffled me and so I wrote one of my turgid letters. They have clearly changed their system as they have now written in advance of my account deal expiry on 12th October

By the way I like the music to the Barclays ad - it is The Look by Metronomy - download the whole track - it is pretty good.

Wasn't there was some recent legislation suggesting that banks write to let you know what accounts they have that would suit your needs better that what you already have?  :-\

I have just been checking my parents stuff and clearly HSBC has been taking the p*** here also. I am sick and tired of chasing this around to be honest - I will look into this legislation but from what I can see they seem to tell you in small print the rates are going to their standard rate - 0.1% etc but nothing which proactively helps you. A family member has taken their eye off the ball on this one and now I will have to get onto it. At same time having to deal with social services financial assessment on my mum in nursing home which is going to be a bit of a mess.
