Can I ask what I suppose will be a dumb question to most of you.
Why is there the emphasis on VX parts, rather than just going to a major car factor ? I have had cars for 50 years (almost) and have fitted water pumps to all sorts from A30 to Granada, Senator, Rover 820 SI, etc. No water pump has ever failed on me on any other car, so I am intrigued why the Omega is different. Is it the engine sizes, or the way the cooling system works.
Just curious, but answer might satisfy others curiosity too

My feeling is that in recent years we have seen some pretty poor quality pattern parts for sale that are simply not fit for purpose. I too have always maintained my own cars and, until recently, have just bought whatever the motor factors had. I can't recall ever having a part fail a second time.
The recent experience we have had with certain parts shows that's not a sensible route to take any more. Whether it's just because Omega parts don't sell in vast quantities, and therefore get less development effort, or a general problem across all vehicles I don't know.
I certainly wouldn't bother changing a V6 water pump as a matter of course any more. It's not normally a catastrophe when they fail, as we've seen, and when I changed mine last year it leaked straight away due to a poor sealing O ring supplied with the (pattern) pump.
