For the very first time since I got my diseasal Astra on the road it failed to start for me this morning.  :( Even when it has 50% diesel & chip oil in it started first turn of the key after the glow plug light went out. This morning I initially forgot about the glow plugs & spun it over (been in the Omega more over the wk end) but then allowed the glow plug light to time out. After 3 or 4 goes I gave up & used the Omega instead. I'd even tightened up the 'fan belt' a little so the screech wouldn't disturb the neighbours at 5 in the morning ..... again! ::) Used it last night OK when I nipped out to fill it up.
Any suggestions?
Astra G 1.7 low blow turbo.

Glow plugs fine!  :)
Disconnected an injector pipe & there's bugger all fuel coming out when it's being cranked. As these engines are prone to fuel pump failure - this was a 'new-to-me' pump last year anyway - I reckon I need another pump for it.  :'(
Looks like I'll be spending a fiver each way to work in the Omega rather than a fiver each day in the Astra. :(

I have heard a lot about Ford diesel fuel pumps on cars which run chip oil as fuel, its too thick for most modern pumps and they burn out.

Can you invest in a more 'beasty' pump?

I'll go & get my Dad's seril ported lap-top soon (after the trraffic has died down) & plug my 'Cheapo TechII' in & see what that has to say.

Ok, is the immobiliser light flashing?

No. The EML light goes out shortly after turning on the ignition as normal, but then comes back on constant after a short while of cranking.

Hmmmm...do you have the means to read the codes and what year is it (97ish?)

If its the GM diesel unit then there is a stop valve on them from memory held on with a couple of sheer bolts that have to be drilled out which can cause no fuel flow.

It's a GM engine 1999.
Shear bolts? Stop valve? You've lost me on those. I bought the car originally with a fubar'd fuel pump in my niavity, before I realised the cost of a new or refurb'd unit. The pump on it is from a breakers  yard of unknown year or milage. I don't remember seeing anything resembling shear bolts, just where you put the 9.5 mm dowl/half a drill to time it up ready to be timed with the car.
Off now to get a suitable lappy.

Sadly it sounds like the EDU unit on the back of the pump might have gone down.

One other known issue is for the main ecu data to be corrupted which can be overcome by re-programming with tech2,

Mmmm! That's what I thought. I've a trawl around the net & it does seem to be the case.
Looks like I'll be on the phone for A N Other tomorrow.
