I need to disconnect the battery but my steroe display does not work. I have the code but obviously won't be able to see what i'm doing when i try and input the code - the stereo , only the display does not and when i press 2 on radio preset it holds the channel for 10 secs and then cuts out.

Is there any way to bypass inputting the code after battery reconnection so that the stereo will work again?

Nope - would make a real mockery of the code if it were that easy to bypass it   

Need to fix that display

The code protection can be disabled before disconnecting the power, but it requires entry of the code to do so, so it's not going to be easy to achieve blind.

Why do you need to disconnect the battery? There may be a way to carry out whatever work you are planning while keeping the radio live, but yes, ultimately, you need to fix the display.

Could it be done by VERY careful counting of button presses ??  High risk of errors I know .. and you would not get the readout telling you how many tries/what timeout remains ..

But theoretically possible ??

Problem is, that you do not know what the starting digit is - depending on firmware could be a zero or 1

Thanks Chaps - Entwood i did think of trying that but knew risks were involved.

Need to change the dispack so i guess battery disconnection is obligatory.

In an ideal world yes. At the last oxford meet, Tunnie and KW looked at it and suggested looking at the wires with a voltmeter but i wouldn't know where to start. To be honest the priority is with the dispack and if it means no stereo then so be it. Fingers crossed it has the code disabled.

If just changing Dispack, don't worry to much about disconnecting the battery

If you're only changing the DIS pack, I'd leave the battery connected. There's nothing you're likely to disturb doing that job that isn't switched by the ignition. Just ensure you don't touch anything to the positive battery terminal. Your call, though.

How much current do you have to pass through one of them before you damage them?
