All them patches and gum are no good, you are trying to get rid of the addiction of nicotine and pumping it into your body through patches is not going to stop you wanting a fag the only way to do it is cold turkey and will power as simple as that!!!! :y

I agree I quit twice once cold turkey and once with lozenges.  The first time I managed to quit for 3 years cold turkey bnecause I was under very little stress at the time.  I only started again following a very stressful scenario involving a Lt Colonel doctor and an exercise with people's lives at stake!  The pressure has pretty much stayed on since with the job but I quit a few months later through using lozenges as it gave the 'hit' when I needed it.  Over time I mixed it up with mints using fewer lozenges and 2 months later I was done!  No fags since!  :y

just wonder how long the hubby is going to last before he caves in! :-/ :-/

Well  done, and best of luck. You will feel better, and last a lot longer, AND you are not lining the pockets of the clowns in the treasury ! :y :y

Ken

PS What colour is ATF ?

No, your 'spare' cash will now go into the petrol tank just to pay the extra fuel charges, so you will, i'm afraid to say, still of course be paying "the clowns in the Treasury" :'( :'(

All the best Marie in  your quest to give up smoking though; it must be worthwhile in the end, at least just to prove to hubbie that you can always succeed as well! :y

Its not will power thats requiered....  Its WONT power...

Tried the chewy, tried the patches, ended up using plain and simple economics - not including what it was doing to me - and stopped somewhere around 15/16 years ago.

Put on the beef since but, in all honesty, do not miss it now in the slightest.

Except when having a pint

Except when sitting admiring the view

Except when reaching the top of the Munro

Except when .......

 ;D

Stick with it.  its worth it....  :y

I stopped about 7 years ago, after smoking for 38 years.  I really had to - my family, friends and colleagues were beginning to make comments about the cough I wouldn't admit I had.  I was able to choose my moment - I had to have a minor operation on my nose, so I couldn't smoke for few days.  As soon as the conk was better, I used patches, but I only needed them for 2 weeks.

I won't say I haven't missed my ciggies, 'cos I have.  I still want to light up sometimes.  But I now think about the sheer sillines of sticking
dried, wrapped tobacco in my mouth and setting fire to it, and I realise that however great the craving, I'm just not going to do it again.

But I do wish I hadn't put on 10 kilos - although, the cost of a complete new wardrobe is approximately what I would have spent on cigarettes, I suppose. :'(

i gave up about 8 years ago, was the hardest thing i have ever thing.

i smoked for 15 years, was smoking 20-30 a day.

The first couple of days were the hardest, once i got through that i then realised i had to change my personal habits as well as giving up smoking.
By that i mean i had to try and avoid those moments when i know i would be at my weakest point. ie after meals and after a few beers.

I put on a bit of weight, instead of eating crap i stuck to fruit, and stuck to 3 good meals a day instead of snaking throughout, yes i put on weight, but i didn't pile it on  :y

good luck, stick at it, remember not only will it have a positive effect on your health everyone in the house will benefit from it

I've trawled through all these posts & read all your personal stories. I've given up alot of illegal habits over the years (no needles ever) but i think you get my drift. Going on & off various ports & docks i'm subject to random swab tests so can't have any of that stuff in my system (not even a spliff) NOTHING. In that respect been clean for years now & don't miss any of it. I like a weekend drink but can take or leave it. Smoking is another story. I smoke 10 /15 roll ups a day.
If i gave up it'd be all or nothing as it was when i gave up the naughty stuff but it's all i've got now. I've already given up my bad eating habits so my hernia will pop back in on it's own to save a hospital visit (fingers crossed) I'm cycling & using a walking/arm machine thing a bit more & have lost nearly a stone in 2 months.
    Wish i'd NEVER smoked.

Sad thing is though you would be healthier putting on 2 stone and quiting smoking than losing weight and still smoking.

You've got a point but @ 6'1, 18 stone before, 17 stone now, i'd be at all sorts of health risks @ 20 stone :- diabetes etc. I've stopped all the truckstops /chuck wagons, only 1 sugar in tea/coffee. Not into fruit except bananas, but i love my veggies, fish & wholemeal seeded bread so that's healthy. Problem is i suffer from mouth hunger so now chew gum or nibble celery or dry cracker wheat while driving & cut out eating late at night or sometimes no evening meal at all if i'm not hungry. It's working slowly but i can't give it all up together. :o

Good luck Marie..... I used patches to help me through the first few weeks. You eventually change to weaker patches, and then nothing. It made it easier for me, but you still need will power.
Don't do what I did, and start eating sweets instead or you'll turn into a fatty like me! :(

Good luck :y   :y   :y
