Carving the Sunday roast, Beef or Pork is never a problem although  leg of Lamb can be a challenge. The problem comes when the joint becomes too small to hold securely to slice for a leftover meal with bubble and squeak or sandwiches. Has anyone got a meat slicer for home use and are they any good or do they end up in the cupboard full of useless kitchen gadgets

That's what I normally do not ideal tho' .

The Argos one is cheap enough to see what they're like and then chuck it in the back of the cupboard

My parents have that slicer from Argos.  I have used it a couple of times.  It's great to be honest.

The only thing I would comment on, is that it could do with being raised up from the surface on which the meat/bread/whatever falls onto.  I dont know how easy this will be to explain, but when you slice something, the slice which has just been cut fouls the next slice coming through, leaving a heap rather than a nice pile of slices.

I have found that placing a damp dishcloth under a thick wooden chopping board, then the slicer on top of that helps a great deal.  (The dishcloth stops the chopping board from moving around).  This way, the slice comes from the machine and falls the depth of the chopping board onto the work-surface below.

None the wiser?

I use one of those and found the same - top tip that man!

I havent tried it on anything as large as a joint of beef, but it's spot on for getting wafer thin slices of ham from a small gammon joint.

I couldn't help but think of this joke when the thread was started:

A man walked in to his local butcher to find his regular butcher, John absent so he asks the manager, "Where's John?" The manager tells the man that John was fired because he was found sticking his willy in the meat slicer" Then the man asked, "Where is the meat slicer now?" The butcher then replied, "I fired her too."

I got the end of my willy caught in a meat slicer once and it was chopped clean off!!    I'm not too bothered though as I've still got loads left!!!
