Played with iPad mini today
« on: 14 November 2012, 01:08:52 »

Very nice. Light weight, much easier to hold. Makes mine feel exceptionally heavy.

She thinks she wants an e reader. Kindle eink or ones of those non back lit black and white jobs. These seem exceptionally unresponsive from what I saw. kindle hd is said to have a walled garden web access.  ???
But to me, generally, if going the tablet route, it may as well have web access and do loads of other stuff besides books. Although night reading and reading by the pool are the main concernes.

Surely a tablet is worth the extra over an e reader...? Although the battery life on the kindle is huge. Months?

I'm thinking Tablet is preferable. Opinions?

For me, tablet every time. But if all she really wants is to read then perhaps an ereader is better :-\

Although the battery life on the kindle is huge. Months?

Battery times as follows:

Kindle Fire HD = 9:57
Ipad 2 = 10:26
Nexus 7 = 12:01

The missus wanted a Kindle as we are seriously running out of space for her books, but after reading all the reviews (and playing with them in the flesh) it's looking very much like she'll be going with a Nexus 7 for chrimbo.

If I want to read books, I'd much - much - rather do it on the Kindle than the iPad.. The responsiveness isn't an issue (you only turn a page every so often unless you read like an android) and there's zero eye strain as it's exactly the same as reading a physical book page, whereas with the iPad my eyes get tired after an hour or so.

The downside is no backlight (on the Kindle, there is on the Nook) but the upside is battery life measured in weeks & months (esp. if you turn the WiFi/3G off) rather than hours.

Don't bother with a Kindle Fire, though; it has all of the down sides of a proper tablet and none of the upsides of a proper kindle..

Yes should have said, one thing that put her off was the lack of back light for night reading.

Download the Kindle app onto your iPad and give her that at night, see how she gets on with the screen.. if she's fine reading for the normal amount of time (bar the weight) then iPad/Android it is..

Very happy with my Kindle the basic one is superb for reading and if you want a light you can buy a cover with an integral light.

Don't see the point of a tablet, then again I don't use a mobile phone only in the car in case of emergency.  ;D

Kindle Paperwhite is meant to be lit when needed...not seen one in the flesh yet.

For long reading, has to be an e-reader, not a tablet.
Tablets fine for <30 mins reading though imho

I would NOT swap my kindle for a tablet.  Yes you can read on a tablet, but a very different experience.

Totally agree, I wouldn't swap mine for a tablet at all. Tablet fo computing stuff perhaps .. but for ease, simplicity and pleasure when reading .. me old kindle wins every time. I have used it for over 4 hours, at night, with the light from the cover, no eye-strain at all, and the charge didn't drop below 80% !!

Yep, display technology on an E-reader is 100's of times better for 'reading' than a tablet as it is designed for the function.

I find reading on standard displays ( e.g. not e-paper) tiring and much harder to digest the written word.

So for pissing about, tablet, for reading, e-reader

They are nice, have a Pad3 as work loaner currently. Considering Mini as our own, they are super light.

As others have said, for reading, a proper E-ink based reader. Even those that can do web are poor at it.

Tablet is more useful for other tasks, but a right royal pain to read books on indoors, and impossible outdoors.

Cirtainly not impossible to read outdoors. Fine in bright sun light. Only time I've had issues outside is with sunglasses on. ::)

But I take your points though.
