went in to vauxhall today to book the car in, 2001 2.6 saloon, for its birthdAY PRESSIE OF A NEW TIMING BELT £348 FITTED NO PROBS I SAYS.

While i'm here Mr Vauxhall man how much for both of my rocker cover gaskets?
Wait a minute and i'll just check he says, upon return with a somewhat big smile........in excess of £360 Mr Cormie as the plastic covers warp and it's best to renew covers and gaskets........oh and there will be the standard 5 hours of labour to do them................

Firstly folks do they warp?
secondly how long to do them myself?

Fek me what a load of shite!

Geniune gaskets yes, with correct sealant. But its total crap that you need to replace the covers too.

When I was at my local dealer re the aircon issue, they did a 'health check' type thing.
I also was told timing belt and gaskets would need done, though no mention of changing the actual covers. Their quotes for this were nowhere near what you have been told though.
I'd put that particular birthday present on hold for the time being

No they don't warp, tell them to fit gaskets only. I'm sure the part numbers are on here somewhere.

Indeed... You could drive to or pay fuel for one of the experienced guys from here to come and do both jobs for not a lot more than the cambelt price from Vx

Not too bad as a dealer price I thought, but can cirtainly be done cheaper by some distance.

I supplied my own cambelt kit (from Andyc) and the dealer here fitted it for £90 inc VAT. WJ King Vx. Just had a service and official stamp for £60 as well. Cannot fault them, as long you dont let them take control of whats being done. Although they did offer a replacement tyre for £161 which I kindly declined.

I have been asking around out of interest to see how much I would have to pay for a "professional" outfit to take on the work of A) Changing the cam belt and tensioner's B) replacing all other belts  C) fitting a new water pump D) washing out the coolant system and replacing with a 50/50 mix.

Some garages shuddered when I asked them to quote, not wanting to do the work. An average price for these was between £600-£800 all parts and labour.

My friendly Vx main dealer, who I would provide the parts to, buying them from their parts department at trade- £240 -, quoted £356 for just labour. So again, all in around £600!

It just shows what you will be charged if you take your V6 miggy into a garage for this work.  It would seem the crippler of the situation is the labour / time the garage's give to do this work which they know for them is lengthy and not straightforward compared to other jobs they can do!

The retail price of the cambelt kit is around £180 IIRC, and most dealers outside London are going to be around the £100ph mark, so £350 is in the right ballpark.

Its just us OOFers know better, don't we

In fact I can hardly believe the very cheap prices quoted above in other posts.  They are at amateur levels, and I wish they were down South!!   The only problem I would worry about though is have they done them correctly with a guarantee if all goes wrong?

Approx £100 for belt & tensioners,then pay a good mechanic £150 (maybe less) to fit them ,or DIY for £0.
