MOT Pass - Should I be Happy or Sad
« on: 29 April 2008, 10:21:33 »

Let me explain.

Wifes CDX just passed its MOT - no advisories. Nothing.

Now when we bought it for a song in Bournemouth 10 months ago we were aware of advisories stating all brake pipe were corroded and may need attention prior to next MOT.

Seems after ten months and 10k on the Scottish roads the Brake Pipes seem to have uncorroded themselves.

Now I always use the same MOT test station so I cant believe there dodgy - anyway arent yhey meant to create work..... :-/

By the way it means the MV6 is now retired - swmbo takes her car back.

Ad going in for sale section pronto for 3.0MV6 :-X

Before passing the car back I would take a close look at those brake lines....

If they are corroded, replace them.

It's got to be worth taking a look at them. Either last year's guy was being over-zealous or this year's guy missed them, as said. I'd want to know what state they are in. If they are OK, a coat of waxoyl or grease, etc. will halt their deterioration and save you hassle next year.

Hmmm.....slap some grease on them.

Brake pipes are not known to cause trouble on Omegas.

For the sake of safety I would also check those break pipes.

Using the same MOT testing station myself for a 19 year old Toyota Carina II which I had been maintaining / repairing / keeping going for 6 years suddenly they said the brake pipes were badly corroded.  I got under the car and replaced them all, and indeed found that they WERE all badly corroded in vital places, which had not suddenly happened within a year but over several.  They were tucked up behind a protective cover, so I and the testing station had been missing this for at least three years! :o :o

Obviously give them a check but...

When I was doing MOT's the rule was that a pipe wall had to be reduced in thickness by one third (IIRC) which is near on impossible to tell without damaging the car so I know that a lot of testers advise on pipes to 'cover arses'.

I hope that is of some help!
