Having had my fair share of problems with my oil burner I can suggest one or more of the following posibilities.

- ran out of oil
- in-line filter blocked
- (may not have one) second filter inside boiler (just before diesel gets to ignition stage) blocked.
- low water pressure
- depending on location of tanks + boiler + route of pipework - the diesel gets too cold and becomes a little jelly like, therefore restricting flow.
- crap in the firing nozzle.
- (unlikely, but possible) soot in boiler / chimney. Keep it clean

Remember a couple of points. A yearly service should keep most of these issues at bay. If you haven't had it serviced in a while, then there's a problem straight away.
Boilers tend to start going on the blink around now, as thru the summer they work very little and then suddenly huge demands are placed on them. And as their use in summer is limited, then winter use, huge, it reacts similar to a car engine. Potter around town for 000s of miles, then blast it out on the M-way for long periods, you're gonna gets problems.

Moral being, that service time is good in autumn, just before long periods of use.

Photocell certainly worth checking as is the filter, Pump can be bled as their may be air in the system if you let it run out, pump could be gone but ime rare in domestic settings, is fuel coming through? their is a filter on the back of the nozzle, you need to take the nozzle out to clean it.......have you got a spark?  Good Luck..... :y :y

Had problems here recently, was low pressure.

Does yours have a pressure gauge?

No, Mr Tunnie. I believe that the Wallstar range of boiler was last updated in 1789.

 ;D

Was a vintage year that  ::)

I used to work with industrial oil heaters that hailed from that era, or thereabouts.... :D :D :D

I've cleaned the photocell with white spirit and replaced it. It looked fine.

Plenty of oil in tank, and plenty of oil in the line leading to the pump.

"Power on" light still showing even when I turn the wall thermostat off. Strange. ??? ???. It always went off before. ??? ???

Still shows no sign of purge/ignition. :-\

Pressure ok?

Perhaps airlocks, giving false reading on pressure - have you bled rads recently?

Plenty of oil in tank and line is a red hering. It's there, but it obviously ain't moving. Filter(s)?

If you have bled the rads, I assume you have topped the water pressure back up to the normal level. Around 2 bar normally for oil burner but some are lower. If you didn't then there is possibly the problem. If you bled a lot of air and topped up the level you could have an air lock. Push the pressure a little higher and bleed a little more.

The filters on oil lines have a tendancy to get clogged up while looking absoutely fine.  Give it a clean with a suitable cleaner, make sure you use your fingers to clear the mesh and retry.  Happened a lot with my oil boiler in france.
