Cats are one of the top threats to US wildlife, killing billions of animals each year, a study suggests.

The authors estimate they are responsible for the deaths of between 1.4 and 3.7 billion birds and 6.9-20.7 billion mammals annually.

Writing in Nature Communications, the scientists said stray and feral cats were the worst offenders.

However, they added that pet cats also played a role and that owners should do more to reduce their impact.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-21236690

Perhaps we should leave the animal kingdom to be what it is, and stop interfering. Survival of the fittest and evolution and all that.......
We, as humans, seem intend on changing the course of evolution ...... for what I am not sure

We didn't! Cats (apart from one wild species in Scotland) are not native to the UK, or indeed Western Europe, so it was only the domestication of wild cats (by HUMANS!) in the Middle East and parts of Asia which started the spread of the pet cat throughout the world. So, we "interfered" from the start!

I'm not a great lover of cats, but I can tolerate them quite happily. However, I do like to see responsible cat ownership - specifically the wearing of a bell to give wild birds a fighting chance. I have seen domestic cats take baby wrens and robins and, as I am keen on birds (who else would build a blue-tit box c/w with cctv!) I am not overly impressed. ;)

Are you sure of that ? not being funny in any way, but surely the ones in Scotland must have come from somewhere south or east towards the end of the last ice age I would have thought.
Also seem to remember from my school days being told we had sabre tooth tigers here at some point.

Slightly off topic but I know, as I have seen them that there are crocodile teeth on the Isle of Wight. Of course I do suppose it really depends how far we want to go back. Yes I totally agree all our modern cats are modern things from a long way away.

It's what I have read. The modern-day domestic cats all have their roots in the Middle East and, possibly to a lesser extent, in the Far East.

You want to see me happy cem ?? then give me permission to shoot all the cats that :

Dig up my plants, shit in my borders, kill the birds I feed, and shit in the sandpits of the children's play areas at the local nursery - so they have had to remove it.

If the cats were controlled, just like a dog, and kept indoors or on leads .. fine .. but if they are allowed to run wild I should be allowed to treat them as wild.

Cats are not just a nuisance.. they are a pest and should be treated as one.

Entwood , cats are free souls you cant close them in a home forever.. But you can build some type of fences that they cant climb at least to protect your garden :-\

I would say yes, we have had a few on our accomplished hunter, but they has also had him 'hung' on several occasions, he thinks nothing of crawling through the hedge and the collar gets caught.... :-\ :-\ :-\

So now I have to go to the expense of building fences to keep vermin out ???

As someone far cleverer than I once said .. with freedom comes responsibility ... if folks want the freedom to own cats they have a responsibility to look after them .. and kicking them out every night to run feral is NOT being responsible.

I have a friend who owns a very expensive, and well trained cat, it is walked on a lead, and is never allowed "free running" outside the house .. it is a properly looked after and controlled animal.... if they can do it, so can all the rest.

I see your point.. None of our cats are left outside at nights.. but daytime they are free either in home or outside.. all of them are taken from streets..  if I didnt they would die starving..

In uk, there are organisations that help with neutering.

A problem more related to humans than cats IMO.

I can`t stand pigeons, orrible feathery noisy fat bastards. Shite all over the cars & garden furniture. I`m after a big moggy that I can train to nail these buggers. My JR hates them too The idiot starts barking first & then wades in with absolutely no hope. He took off after a pigeon with a wooden leg once, but spotted his lost ball lurking in the grass & fogot completely about his mission to destroy the enemy. Running round the garden in a lap of honour with Mr squeaky it was so embarrassing.
