Yep dangerous to fit winter tyres to rear and summer to front - should fit either 4 x summer or 4 x winter.  Ignorance rules ok  ::)  And cem is right  :y

I thought that this was the case. A bloke at work was quite pleased with his winter tyres at just the front of his VW transporter/van ...... I didn't think it was worth the discussion  ;D

Its the same as fitting new suspension parts to one side only - just common sense really

Does sound like there's a pitiful level of grip on the winter tyres if they have unbalanced the car that much. Put them all round and the car will be balanced but cornering and stopping distances compromised for most of the UK winter. Doesn't sound like a great plan to me.

Last year (and this year) I ran winters from late October to late March, no problems spinning out or lighting the rears up (unless it's pouring with rain and I go from 0 to WOT with a significant amount of steering lock on exiting a junction) in temperatures from -5C to +15C..

I'd posit she's either bought knock off tyres or has no idea how to drive.

Agreed - but guess its a combination of an unbalanced car and poor driving ability

Worked ok at the correct temp for winters. As you might expect. Trouble appears to be that the correct temp only lasted 2 weeks.

After 3 weeks since fitting they have to come off. And as Kev suggests, clearly the grip level is markedly different from summer tyres at that temp.

If the rear lost grip, the front would have too if winters all round at the same temp.

As said sooooo many times before. We just don't get the weather to justify winters.

I didn't see them purchased so they could be, but he did say new.

And she can drive, trust me. Rare I know. She's a proper petrol head.

I would add, as we have the same car, the tc is pretty good, it was corner speed that upset it by the sound of it. And that corner speed was at line astern speeds in rush hour on a motorway roundabout.
Other traffic had no problem. I asked similar questions, albeit more.... Carefully. ;D

Have worked in Sweden, Finland and travelled extensively in Denmark.  Law in Sweden says for Swedish registered cars a set (thats 4) winter tyres must be fitted from 1 December - 31 March (irrespective of weather conditions).  Similar in Finland and Denmark.  At the end of the day these guys are well experienced in the use of winter tyres - and the relevant point is fit a set (not 2) irrespective of weather conditions (ie temperature) from 1/12 tp 31/3.  End of ;)

Your mates wifes issues are because of only fitting 2 winter tyres (unbalanced car) and poor driving ability.

In the winter of 1985/86 (it was a long time ago & I can't remember  ::)) in Aalborg, the taxi drivers drove in the snow as though it was a beautiful summer's day ...... but they had studded tyres on their Mercs.
