the PM needs to be shot!
« on: 07 May 2008, 12:49:56 »

well every lunch i do the usual news surfing when i came across this, http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7327702.stm

I mean honestly, at a time when police resources are stretched, the economy is falling and the stress and stains of everyday life is rising, the government go against the experts that they employ and re-classify something with there only reason being to protect the health and in particular, children.

Taken from BBC web site
Quote
By ignoring their advice about the (re)classification of cannabis, Gordon Brown seems to think he knows more about the dangers of its use than an advisory panel of experts. Perhaps he considers his own uninformed prejudices to be more reliable than the learned opinions of medical professionals? Or perhaps he's an expert in neuropharmachology and psychiatry as well as economics? (How lucky we are to have such an omniscient genius at the helm of our country!) Or, perhaps, just political posturing?

I'm not sure what other view are but personally i think he is doing this for no other reason that to get paper headlines, but i honestly think its only going to make matters worse!

First of all its already illegal so obviously the people who smoke it can't be bothered about the law. therefore by re-classifying it will only scare away the small dealers, good you may think, but its the oposite of that! it will then fall into the hands of the pushers (ie those who deal harder drugs) which will then in turn open up the floodgates for young people to be trying actual dangerous drugs!

In addition to that it will take up more police resources at a time when the police are already stretching their resources!

I firmly belive that the only way to resolve the situation of young people smoking (which i agree ruins lifes but not the way the goverment suggests!) is to de-criminalize it like Holland, USA, Canada etc. That way the government can take control of the so called "lethal" strains, control the sale with age limits, educate parents and collect the taxes rather than it funding criminals.

I have no strong personal view on this one way or the other, but it does nicely illustrate how this government works.

Ignore the experts, because nanny state knows what's best, and never let common sense and the facts get in the way of personal prejudice.

.. and, of course, why is the guy at the top wasting time over a non-issue like this when there are more pressing issues to see to?

If it reduces the number of idiots getting in their cars whilst they're still high on cannabis, then I'm all for it.  Too many people out there who drive like morons even when they're not stoned...cannabis use only makes it worse on the roads, not better.  And these so-called experts - do you think they drive? Yea right...sandal wearing, train-travelling university professors.

i think they downgraded cannabis to try to be trendy, get the young to vote for them, now, just as cynically it is being reclassifed to try to make gordon look as though he is strong and becoming more right wing to tempt middle england to get on board again.i dont care if they classify it A orZ,but i do think they should take drug law enforcement much more seriously,i have close up first hand experience of what cannabis use can do to someone, its heartbreaking and i wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy.

I voted A, since i believe its only as dangerous as alcohol really, which of course carries no drug classification

It doesn't matter what category it is in, it's still a dangerous drug which is suspected of triggering psychotic illness in some users.  It is illegal to cultivate, sell or even (I think) possess the stuff.

I'm afraid I'm quite opinionated on the subject... It's not through personal preference either as I don't touch the stuff (random drugs tests at work would stop me even if I did!!)

But... I have first hand experience of the medical benefits. My Aunt, who is no longer with us, had severe MS and was on the trial of cannabis. It did her the world of good... She may have been a little spaced out but she wasn't in pain and even had slightly more control over her limbs! It made her days slightly more bearable and IMO that is the most important thing!

Rant over... Strange really, the wife and I were discussing the same thing in the car at lunch time!!  ;)

like any drug,controlled/prescribed use can be benificial to those who need it.but for recreational use it can be very dangerous because in certain people it can and does cause very serious mental health issues. i also believe that if the authorities got on top of the drugs problem in this country that much of the general crime problem would be solved at the same time.

this is one of the reasons i have kept out of this discussion.....

I don't do drugs, and yes i have an opinon, but for medical purposes i do believe if it can be proven in medical trials that it works then for that purpose i could see no issue.

That still wouldn't change my view of recreational drugs though

ALL drugs, prescribed or otherwise, have some sort of payoff --- for medicinal use you have to weigh up the pros vs the cons. As an arthritis sufferer I am in pain everyday and can appreciate the benefits (although it's use in MS is entirely different), however I would need to be a LOT worse before I resorted to cannabis or the like.

How about adding to the poll option D, "I don't care what they do with it"
As I really don't care, if people want to use it it's up to them, as long as they don't drive. And don't mess up other peoples lives.

You have a point there, Mike.  Don't often (ever?) see reports about bods high on Cannabis rampaging through the streets!
