The thought of petrol went through my head yesterday when I filled up at Reading (Calcot) sainsburys for 139.9

A gallon at that price, is £6.36... so at 27.5 mpg, which I average in the Jag unless I'm 'playing' - that's only 23p per mile... so 100 miles costs me £23.

I agree £1.40 looks very high, but mile for mile, based on the above, that's really not that bad, in a big, V6 comfy car?  :-\

Ultimately, if I had a smaller, 50mpg car, I'd be looking at 100 miles for around £12. Which is 12p per mile, and excellent value motoring.

I guess the price we're paying is largely because of our choice of big engined heavy cars?  :y

Just checked out the trip computer in my MV6 2.6 auto............2103 miles......26.8 MPG. I've no idea how accurate these figures are. I suspect the trip computers are designed to flatter. :-\

Over that sort of mileage.. I would hedge a guess that it's a pretty accurate reflection...

I drive everyday a BMW 520d which averages currently  44.7 MPG, it's a heavy car, very comfy and quiet, it doesn't have a big engine and it's very good on fuel. That doesn't excuse the fact that the cost of fuel is outrageous.

Okey Dokey, well diesel is obviously a little more than petrol, so say you're paying 145.9p for a litre of diesel, a gallon is £6.64. At 44.7MPG, that's almost bang on 15p per mile.

In more realistic terms, that's £15 for 100 miles average driving in your car.

I know fuel is more than it used to be - but I still don't class 100 miles for £15 in a comfy car as 'outrageous'?  :)

I do :).

Del.....44.7 MPG. :o :o :o that's almost exactly the figure we get from Mrs Opti's Corsa 1.2 on a long run.

44.7 is easy, nor is that driving slow everywhere. If I were to sit on the motorway at 65 MPH I can get 63 MPG easy, that's constant motorway to get over 60 though. As I say the average which is over the past 2374 miles is 44.7.

I don't think it's bad from that car, however I don't agree with the cost of the fuel, nor do I agree with the fact a lot of it's made up with taxes from the Government. Using a 520d as an example is a bad case really as they're so good on fuel. I'll use the 4Motion Golf I picked up last week, 18.3 MPG. Case now sound better  ;).

This is another point, you use your van for work, you have too. Luckily due to the nature of what I do, I can choose a number of cars to drive on a day to day basis, but for you who has to use a van which is pretty heavy on fuel it's not on. Your cost of living hasn't gone down, and your wages probably haven't gone up, yet your fuel costs have gone up loads over the past say 3-4 years.

There's a fair few active members on here, lets get a fuel protest going. Lets block up all the motorways, and sort this shit tip of a country out. £1.40.9 for petrol pretty much everywhere around Ashford it's beyond a joke.

There ain't enough Omega's on the road to block all the motorways ;D ;D

Petrol is still 136.9 at Hazlemere (Esso) and 137.9 at Shell

Del like most is fed up at being shafted every time he fills up...the MPG of his car is neither here or there and tbh dell our petrol in kent is around 2-3 p a litre more expensive than london (which makes no sense)

but dell to be honest if the highways agency (the day glow wombels) carry on the way they are going we wont need a fuel protest as that lot without any police intervention managed to bring north kent too a shuddering halt today by closeing  the M 20  >:(
